Totally agree, CR.
Where would we have been, this past frost-bound month, without the odd glimpse of some quality racing from Dubai, and the occasional tilt at some very decent prospects?October 20, 2009 at 12:57 #12979Not content with pulling all the big race videos off You Tube and charging for their archive, RUK have now taken it upon themselves to stitch up racings radio audience, Timeform and the BHA.

October 20, 2009 at 13:33 #254414It beggars belief – so petty – presumably they have fewer subscribers than they envisaged and they now have to squeeze every penny possible from other sources.

Like the Racing Post they’re obviously struggling for subscribers and will try to improve revenue in any way they can.
Bleeding a slow and painful death, one presumes.

Graysonscolumn may have more to say re: Timeform RadioAs it happens, despite repeatedly banging-on about how £20 a month for televisual RUK is good value, I’ve taken the decision to unsubscribe from Sky entirely as apart from RUK and ATR there’s nothing on it I want to watch that isn’t available on Freeview.
So from December it will be on-line RUK at £9.99pm and I will make do with the free on-line ATR replays, as I can’t abide anymore of their live coverage and goddam adverts
£30pm saved
Given the news reported by CR I now feel rather chuffed that RUK have been deprived of a monthly tenner
October 20, 2009 at 16:13 #254433Well good luck unsubscribing from Sky – it was a nightmare when I told them to take a hike.
Also expect a continual bombardment of mail attempting to get you to rejoin – even if you tell them to stop mailing you.
Indeed they seem so hell-bent on trying to persuade me to come back to them, despite me telling them I want no more communication from them, I am now having to resort to a solicitors letter to try and stop them harassing me.
I had to switch to Freestat as Freeview is not an option in Milton Keynes, where external TV aerials are banned, plus Freesat has the advantage of HD.

Got the ‘sorry to hear you’re leaving’ letter with discounted offers of Sky TV + Broadband + Mobile etc and combinations thereof to tempt me back, which was duly ignored. No axe to grind with Sky, it served its purpose but I’ve grown increasingly weary of TV in general anyway. Radio is what I really cherish. Even more so now there is the iPlayer and its wonderful ‘listen again’ facility.
October 20, 2009 at 18:48 #254472Soon only the priviliged few will be able to follow the sport, harking back to the "good old days" of the 17th century where the landed gentry in their horse drawn carraiges would move across different parts of the Newmarket racecourse complex (leaving the riif raff behind on foot) to watch the races which finished in different places.
What with this and the BBC cutbacks, no wonder it’s harder getting people into this sport.
October 20, 2009 at 21:30 #254510It should be pointed out that RUK and Timeform Radio do, at least, enjoy a perfectly good relationship at grass roots level. Steve Mellish was a guest presenter on TR on Tuesday last and Lydia Hislop co-presented the Timeform Radio previews and reviews at Cheltenham last weekend. Jonathan Neesom even shared out some RUK brownies* to the TR crew. I’m hoping for sausages at the Open Meeting again.

October 20, 2009 at 22:05 #254514I don’t know whether we should have any sympathy for the BHA, who the bloody hell is supposed to be running the show?
Two dedicated racing channels, great crowds, a lot of money bet on the sport and we’re still racing for piss poor prize money, who’s getting all the money? How much does racing receive from RUK?
Woodbine have peanuts bet on a race yet even their basic races are run for 20 or 30 grand.
There’s something seriously wrong with the way the sport is run in this country.October 21, 2009 at 06:45 #254533Another head scratcher from RUK.
I know little about the management structure at the channel – who is making these decisions?
October 21, 2009 at 07:21 #254536I unsubscribed from Sky three months ago as I moved address and thought it would be a good idea to get rid of it. When unsubscribing I was asked what my new address would be; I said, why do you need that information? The lady said because we do sir, blah. Needless to say it wasn’t long before I started getting letters advertising their products at my new address. It seems once you join, you never leave.

It strikes me there are two options in this case;
a) Tell them to mind their own ****ing business
or
b) Give them a new address that doesn’t exist so that their waste paper comes back to them!

Try googling "RUK CEO"
October 21, 2009 at 10:01 #254552A staggering decision. Clearly the accountants have taken over the asylum. The mantra cost of everything value of nothing is being rammed home
Reminisent of another accountant, Peter Savills, autistic proposal to charge the press for racecards
If racing cannot see that it needs to get the best possible exposure to attempt to turn back its rapidly decling share of the betting market, then it gets all it deserves
November 7, 2009 at 17:19 #13166Don’t know when this happened but its a welcome development. Well done to RUK on this occasion.

November 7, 2009 at 19:40 #257689I think ‘Angry Horse Versus Irish Raptor’ may be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.
