The intention is not to prove a point either way, but have a look at this:

Does anyone think Bustino would have beaten Grundy had Joe Mercer ( the hands ‘n’ heels rider

    sans pareil

) raised and flailed his whip?

Admittedly, had he smacked Bustino owner Lady Beaverbrook would have probably horse-whipped Joe, as she was ‘anti-whip’ :)

As it was the demure old lady was gracious in defeat "I thought Mercer rode the horse beautifully"

Indeed, aesthetically certainly, compared to Eddery on Grundy. But more ‘effective’ :?:

Don’t know about Mercer doing it but think Bustino may have prevailed under a Lester rat a tat finish
Interestingly though I don’t think Mercer lasted much longer as stable jockey to Hern did he? was it 12 months?

Willie Carson replaced Joe Mercer at Dick Hern’s stable in 1977 and Mercer side-stepped his way to Henry Cecil when that trainer moved to Warren Place

If memory serves it was the Hern stable owners, Michael Sobell and Arnold Weinstock, who wanted Mercer removed

Carson was another very tidy balanced hands ‘n’ heels rider and conservative whip-wielder

This is Carson at about his ‘hardest’:

Do horses have personalities just like people? Are some just lazy? Are some lazy but smart? Are some unwilling to challenge the leader? Do some challenge their rider? Do they need help to overcome these traits? Are most jockeys horsemen or just jockeys? Can they read a horse as well as ride him? Can they use "time out" with an undisciplined horse? How will they work with a horse without a discipline? Can they use their heels to urge a horse forward? Does it work with racehorses if they are some of the above type horses??
