Borrowing from a 20 year old piece in The Independent, the tipster who preceded Al Rubin at The Daily Worker lasted a mere 3 weeks. This was because during his short tenure he constantly pestered the editor to allow him to sign his racing column as Nilats.
Furthermore, to illustrate how mundanity has crept up on the presentation of racing previews over the years, another Daily Worker pundit called The Whip wrote an A-Z analysis of the 1937 Lincoln in the form of 26 rhyming couplets.
I believe that poetic previews might be a serious challenge for today’s experts, and would possibly stretch even the formidable talents of the estimable Venture to Cognac.
December 8, 2016 at 14:47 #1276065The Mirror costs too much and contains the horror of Dave Yates getting it off his chest. More usually get The Sun at 70p . Pretty good and well presented but the only other thing I enjoy in the publication is their general knowledge crossword. The Star costs 50p on Saturday .An occasional purchase. The racecards are a bit small for me but a good effort on the whole. Last Saturday included the Fairyhouse runners and the entries for the meetings on Sunday as well as a good spread of features and reporting. Sadly the rest of the paper goes straight to recycling.
I usually get the Sun on a Saturday. Again read very little of the rag but the Racing pullout isn’t bad and I find easiest to follow. They only thing I can’t quite get is that they have 2 pages of Football betting in this yet also have a Weekend Football pullout. These 2 pages could easily cover the Irish meetings for the Saturday and Sunday which they very rarely show. They also have approx. half page for the Dogs, which although doesn’t interest me, is a nice touch for those that are.
As my brother is a Liverpool fan, he has disowned me since I started buying this and won’t entertain any World Cup wallcharts etc. I may give his kids to fill in. These are thrown straight in the bin.
December 9, 2016 at 08:19 #1276129I pay 42 euro a year for full access to The Guardian on iPad and iPhone, which is excellent value.
Take the points about their “Opinion” contributors, whom have been almost exclusively even more miserable since Brexit. But it is important to read varied opinion on any subject, for therein lies the path to the true meaning of education imo.
Besides which their iPhone app has 22 individual sections, further subdivided as you drill down into them. Its not all Marina Hyde!
Add in a brilliant technical implementation, the ability to personalize your home page and a pleasing search function (for a change) and its the way forward.

I think the Guardian’s coverage of sport is fantastic (especially Marina Hyde), albeit they don’t seem to have much cash for racing. Of their two racing journalists I find Chris Cook’s hatred of flat racing slightly grating, but Greg Wood is great.
December 9, 2016 at 18:10 #1276233The Guardian is pretty much anti horse in general The horse in it’s various forms is considered to be a symbol of upper class worthless “toffs” who want to kill fluffy animals. The fox and badger are class warriors.
Some of their racing coverage is good and serious, I follow on line, but it covers a deal of Australian and USA racing, many of the comments on the forums are very anti racing.Their coverage of equestrian sport in the last two Olympics has been appalling, every crazy cliche in the book. It made me very angry.
However where is there a decent newspaper apart from the Guardian?December 10, 2016 at 02:48 #1276347Deleted this. Pics I wanted to post look crap on it. CR
December 13, 2016 at 21:46 #1277086The Times today offers two articles, one concerning Walter Swinburn and the other about Jim Best. Both pieces run to 800-1000 words.
One might conclude that the newspaper isn’t that interested in bread & butter races (save the two line analysis mentioned by betlarge) but that it does report the big stories in good depth.
December 14, 2016 at 09:55 #1277113It would be a tad surprising if the untimely death of a familiar sportsman and another sordid tale of familiar sporting corruption didn’t get decent coverage
No idea about the Rag but the online Guardian has decent articles on Swinburn and Best too
