First of all, merry christmas and a happy new year to everyone on TRF, especially Corm without whom none of this would exist.
On the subject of things that no longer exist, and following hot on the heels of the ever popular, but no longer with us for reasons known only to a certain F Done, RP/Tote Ten To Follow, it seems that the also ever-popular Racing Post Christmas Quiz has been consigned to history. Maybe John Randall is ill? Or maybe the increasingly annoying new generation of RP journalists, headed up by the intensely irritating “fake” heavy gambler Bruce Millington have decided the wider population of racing fans (as opposed to self styled compulsive gamblers) no longer want said quiz.
Maybe I am in a tiny minority, and if so then fine. But I loved the challenge of the RP Christmas Quiz as I did the challenge of the Ten To Follow competitions.
I reminded myself the other day of the kerfuffle that surrounded Paul Haig’s sudden and unexpected exit from the RP a few years back. Haig said the paper he loved had become nothing more than a vehicle for bookmaker driven tipsters. Bruce Millington was quoted as dismissing out of hand everything Haigh had claimed. Having read and admired Haigh’s writing for years, I found his defence far more credible than the current editor of the RP who’s appearance in the recent “Britain At The Bookies” documentary summed up what a disingenuous and frankly mildly unsettling figure he is.
Right, rant over, back to the mince pies and mulled wine!
December 24, 2015 at 20:43 #1227034Merry Christmas to you too, Ivanjica. Not certain, but I think JR’s quiz was in yesterday’s paper.
As to the demise of the once-hugely successful Tote TTF, it was killed off by mindless greed when a new director decided the entry fee should be doubled. The man who’d administered the comp throughout its long ‘life’, John Birmingham, warned that it would be a disaster if the fee were doubled. They went ahead, only to find John was right.
Not only was the TTF very profitable for the Tote, it was a feelgood aspect of their brand and fondly looked upon by many in racing, especially NH enthusiasts. For me it goes down as the biggest and most damaging piece of product vandalism in betting history; the fact that it was perpetrated by the company that ran it shoves it into the realms of the surreal.
December 24, 2015 at 20:45 #1227035There was a quiz in yesterdays Racing Post.My memory is getting worse so I did not attempt it this year.I hope you can find a copy so you can enter.
If you go to back a certainty always buy a return ticket.
December 24, 2015 at 20:47 #1227036Thanks chaps. I suppose I owe the RP an apology!
December 24, 2015 at 21:01 #1227040I would not bother with an apology to the Racing Post.I started doing the TTF when the old Pacemaker magazine ran it. I was also a Paul Haigh fan.Merry Christmas to everyone on here.

December 27, 2015 at 12:02 #1227375Hi
I think the quiz was in the 23/12/15 issue, not the Christmas Eve edition as it used to be. However I found a link via the Racing Post Twitter feed
https://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/racingpost/christmas-quiz-2016/
There was no link to it from the Racing Post homepage and you cannot go forward from the current page until all the questions are answered, and its also very difficult to print off.
I hope this helps.

Certainly does help! Thanks for finding the link TP. They could have been put a bit more effort into marketing it online. Anyway never mind, got there in the end! Cheers
