…. and clearly when your talking to someone like Sheikh Mo then you have to be pretty deferential,
Why?
May 1, 2016 at 22:11 #1244328Because he’s vice president and prime minister of his country.
By all means ask searching questions of trainers who train horse for him, but I don’t think our government (plus a number of companies) would be too happy if he, or any other memeber of the Dubai ruling family, got an ear-bashing from a sports journalist and this then led to some politically embarrassing diplomatic or trade relations hoo-ha.
May 2, 2016 at 00:14 #1244356According to the Racing Post, Bell, Chapman, Cumani and Chamberlin are already pencilled in if they want it.
A truly uninspiring list. Chapman suffers from an excess of “personality”, whilst the other three seem completely devoid of it.
Instead of the “same old, same old” ITV could be radically different and try to recruit genuinely fresh talent for the new programme. There are any number of knowledgeable, intelligent, people out there who have a passion for racing and could almost certainly do a better job than the hackneyed, fawning, lot viewers currently have to endure.
One of my pet peeves is the lack of racial diversity in racing on television: instead of the execrable Rishi Persad, why can’t we have the excellent Ken Pitterson? Or, failing that, the manager from one of my local bookies? He’d give any of them a run for their money!

I don’t disagree but could you name some of those people?

Of course I could. But to reel off a list of betting shop managers, punters, people I meet at racecourses and TRF members would be to miss the point. Why didn’t ITV advertise their upcoming takeover of racing coverage and look to recruit newcomers to its team? I didn’t see one ad on the channel itself, on its website or anywhere in the racing press.
It’s the same old closed shop, isn’t it, and that is the crux of the issue. Without an influx of fresh blood, racing coverage will continue to stagnate.

Yep; it needs fresh blood at all levels, not least in the covering shed.
May 2, 2016 at 10:24 #1244376This time next year ITV will be 4 months into their new contract and while this year ch4 are giving us 10 days out of 15 days racing on a mainstream channel, next year we will be lucky to have 1 day
May 2, 2016 at 16:28 #1244393It’s not a sport I watch much but I’ve been enjoying bits and pieces of the World Snooker Championship and have been quite impressed with the understated and generally knowledgeable commentaries; all of whom, rather surprisingly given the vacuous input when their peers in other sports are given a microphone, are ex-players
Hazel Irvine, who despite her understandable remit to try as hard as she can to convince the viewer that every frame and game is terrifically exciting is also pleasantly calm and composed
This is the sort of Benaud-like sports presentation that should be the model for all
If Mick Fitzgerald had the warm, quiet Irish twang of Ken Doherty I might even watch C4 Racing again
May 10, 2016 at 11:41 #1245256Richard Willoughby appointed as itv racing editor he has been editor at RUK for last five years which may put Chapman out of the equation as he isn’t popular with RUK
http://sport-onthebox.com/2016/05/10/itv-sport-appoints-horse-racing-editor-for-2017-coverage/You would think he is likely to bring his mates from RUK over with him ie Oli Bell and Nick Luck out of loyalty.
May 10, 2016 at 12:31 #1245263Dave Nevison knocking them dead in the betting ring

Please, not Luck!
I hope ITV insist on a new presenting team and leave Luck to play with all his pals on RUK.
May 10, 2016 at 15:04 #1245273Please keep Jamie Lynch off our screens.
What a load of rubbish he talks.
After Humphrey Bogart won the other day it was obvious that the trial wasn’t worth a hill of beans and that it was a desperate renewal of a race that has little bearing on the Derby of late anyway.
Instead of admitting it was rubbish Jamie Lynch was wittering on about how refreshing it was to see an exposed horse win a trial for a change.
I think he’s full of Tom Tit myself.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 10, 2016 at 18:06 #1245283For sure, I also hope Dick Willoughby has some sort of grudge against Luck. He’s OK for a specialist racing channel, but must instantly alienate the everyman terrestrial viewer who stumbles across the racing.
I think Bell has a great chance of getting the call as a less grating, less smug and all-round likeable version of Luck. I’ve also heard him described as “dishy” by a few ladies, so that’s bound to play a part in the harsh realities of ITV presenter selection decisions.
Otherwise I think it would be good to start as fresh as possible. Clear out everyone (apart from commentary mainstays Holt & Hoiles) who have been on the C4 or BBC teams in the past. Find fresh faces for the roving reporter and analyst roles. A new semi-grizzled eccentric betting jungle warrior would be good, though not Nevison who has too many axes to grind. If Chapman would accept a non-anchor role this might be his element!
May 10, 2016 at 22:21 #1245309Richard is big mates with Oli and Nick, you only have to look at his twitter almost every photo is of Oli Bell.
There is no way he won’t bring his mates with him plus James Willoughby if they are related, surprised Angus McNae has never been in frame for a position or Lydia Hyslop.
The main courses itv will televise are Racing UK ones so it would make sense employing the RUK editor to take on the same team.
May 10, 2016 at 23:56 #1245315Was hoping they would think out of the box but that looks unlikely. I’m a big fan of chappers but after that none of the names mentioned fill me with enthusiasm. We will just have to live with what we get. Oh for a Peter osullevan or his like. In my dreams only it seems.
May 11, 2016 at 11:40 #1245349The snivelling little child that is Oli ‘velvet collar’ Bell. There is nothing about his voice which would suggest a career in broadcasting until you realise his dad is Rupert Bell. Racing has always been jobs for the boys and Bell is just another example off that production line of mediocrity. It is a shocking indictment of racing broadcasting that he appears on the ITV list at all, let alone supposedly somewhere near the top of it.
Obviously, I am hitting my head against a brick wall but surely RUK cannot be used as a blueprint for a mainstream channel. I actually thought that was the problem with the last revamp. What a good idea, shuffle a couple faces and just do the same thing again. Channel 4 obviously tolerated relatively small viewing figures but I can’t see ITV putting up with a sinking ship for anything like a similar length of time.
If they do put Willoughby & Co on the occasional viewer might be forgiven for thinking that they have mistakenly tuned in to The Bellend Of The Year Awards.
May 11, 2016 at 12:04 #1245350I really don’t understand why anybody would want to listen to the ramblings of Willoughby. Oli Bell on the other hand I think does a good job.
