I’m sure Aussie Jim was EXPECTING Heaven Sent to grab the lead past Spacious, according to my eyes Spacious never let Heaven Sent get upsides, never mind past. Jim’s commentary made the race sound like Spacious got caught, passed, and fought back to win.

    Not great.

James Sherwood is still a smug, pretensious TW@T but it would not be Royal Ascot without one.

I realise that nostalgia is thought to be a disease that us elderly ones suffer from but I find that more and more I am wishing that the coverage could revert to the style of the sixties.

Paddock shots with a Clive Graham voice-over, some analysis and the odd interview by old ‘big-ears’ and sublime race-commentary by the master.

Can you please go back to reporting the news and not trying to be part of it.

I never thought I could be turned off this sport by television coverage.

Yesterday, the beeb tried to explain their decision of dumbing down by saying that they had to encourage new racing viewers by making it more interesting ( ) and less esoteric – though, in keeping with the dumbing down aspect, they of course, didn’t use that word.

It crossed my mind when he said that, that perhaps more television coverage of racing would help, also.

Coverage on the BBC is abysmal.

    1. Dumbed down beyond belief.
    2. Jim McGrath’s commentary on Jealous Again…said she had gone six, seven lengths clear. Won by five and the gap was never bigger. That’s just one example from many. Getting Motsonesque in his senior years.
    3. Clare Balding… FFS get on your knees and just kiss the asses of everyone you talk to.
    4. Horses in parade ring for Queen Anne or Windsor (forget) and the bell rang for jockeys to mount. The BBC thought it was a good idea to air the next installment of The Apprentice Jockey.
    5. Balding could at least try to pronounce a winning jockey’s name correctly. Tadagh (can’t spell it but i can pronounce it) O’Shea’s name was pronounced correctly by everyone else on the show except her. At least three times.
    6. Parrot and Fatman. Give me a break. Treat the viewer with some respect. Why oh why?
    7. Rishi, Go away! You are rubbish. Every post race interview is a repeat of the one before. Always, What does it mean for you to win at Royal Ascot?

I could go on. But what’s the point. I love horse racing and love watching it on TV and so do many more, so please oh please BBC , GET A GRIP AND STOP TREATING US LIKE IDIOTS.

I don’t agree with much of the above except no. 7 which has just been rudely highlighted with Rishi Persad’s appallingly insensitive questioning of Henry Cecil.
After such a good week this shocked me to the point of rage.

The feed I’m receiving to watch Royal Ascot is ATR – the channel (TVN) switched from taking in the Beeb’s coverage two years ago.

Not a bad business move. :)

As I’ve mentioned a couple of times on here, the BBC’s coverage doesn’t cater specifically for the purist. They’re trying to appeal to the general public and "entertain the viewers" rather than "inform the punters".

I’ve been watching the Beeb most of the week and I honestly can’t see what the problem is.

In fact looking at the bigger picture, I think the current format is far more likely to attract your casual viewer to take a greater interest in racing than a programme dedicated to hardcore racing supporters the likes of which you are likely to find on a racing forum.

    I admit there are parts/people of/on the show I don’t like – but hey – life’s too short

I didn’t see the Rishi thing – what did he say?

Not sure if we are talking about the Cecil interview – personally I don’t think Cecil did himself any favours.

Leaving aside the content of his interviews the big problem for Rishi is that he conveys no impression of sincerity at all. It is as if the whole thing is a spoof.

Having praised the BBC all week I have to say that I’m disgusted with the Henry Cecil interview; he’s probably not the easiest of people to interview but, what an insensitive thing to say. Totally unprofessional of Rishi.

Henry Cecil has always been a gent, if not particularly revealing, in interviews. I’m told Rishi asked "How are things healthwise?" which is not only a crass question, but a question crassly worded to boot. He is a total embarrassment. Clare Balding deserves none of the brickbats though, especially given the idiots she has to work with.
