Considering betting on the sport is on its backside at the moment you’d think the media would be doing more to get people interested. Yet half the Racing Post content is stuck behind a paywall and I’ve noticed lately you need to have an account just to view most of the horses form now
I’m sure that’s not a paid account but they want you to sign up for a reason, there’s obviously a marketing benefit to them of having your data. Its a hassle anyway that wasn’t needed imo.Sporting Life is increasingly going that way to. Value Bet for example used to be a free to access article which I found interesting to read. They’ve always done quite well according to their own records but considering the landscape why have they now decided to jump on the gravy train of making people pay for it along with other bits on the site.

And then there’s oddschecker doing the same just to look at betting markets.
Only a matter of time before free to air terrestrial coverage ends up on some ITV subscription package I reckon.
I don’t bet much any more anyway thankfully because all of this would do my nut in if I was still serious about it all.
February 15, 2025 at 10:26 #1720586Yeah, i noticed that some of the Sporting Life Tips had become a login exercise.
Thing is my Skybet account went belly up a couple of years back and every time i put in my email address it recognises me, but always fails to send me a link to reset my password, even though the auto message says it will. And i cant be bothered to phone their cust servs, as last time they asked for passport details and other forms of id.
Why their system wont send me a password reset link i dont know. The issue also locks me out of the ITV7 comp, as well.
Oddschecker has been like it for months now; can usually get about 4 or 5 odds comparisons in any one day, before it locks me out.
Rant over
February 15, 2025 at 12:34 #1720630And the paper copy of the RP is up to £5.50 on a Saturday now.
It does have a lot of information in it and I appreciate a lot of work goes into compiling it.
But a large slice of that cost is probably down to paying tipsters like Jonny Dineen a kings ransom to tip me up a 4/7 shot at Bellewstown!
If they got rid of half of these so called experts and concentrated on making the form pages more in depth I’m sure something could be done about the ever increasing cost! It seemingly just goes up 40 or 50p every 6 months or so now regardless.
February 15, 2025 at 12:45 #1720633I had a real shock when I couldn’t access future entries on TRP the other day. I now have to log in all the time. If I’d had to pay to do so I wouldn’t’ve bothered and that would have put an end to me having ante post bets. Not that the small amount I spend on betting would have had much of an effect but it all adds up.

You’ve hit the nail squarely on the head there, Tiz.
The sheer number of so-called “experts” they have is ridiculous. They could easily bin 80% of them and save on costs.
February 15, 2025 at 20:42 #1720691Who needs tipsters nowadays? Everything Mark Holder says is behind a paywall. Same applies to Mr. Pricewise Tom Segal. Apparently he had a 7/2 winner today among the 5-6 tips he let out. Steve Palmer (Golf), who has winners at nice prices I never seem to get, is also behind a paywall. Only articles I’d consider paying for at times come from Tony Morris or John Randall.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.February 16, 2025 at 09:25 #1720727So true, Ginge.
I did laugh at one of The RP headlines today, saying Pricewise had a 7/2 winner yesterday, so sign up for his tips.
7/2 tip! Wow!
I want a 20/1 winner from a 25 runner handicap hurdle

The two guys on Sporting Life tips sometimes get some nice priced winners.
February 16, 2025 at 20:21 #1720774Just search for a paywall remover.

Unbelievable the amount of favs he tips up at inflated odds and place terms. Yet still seems to do his tits in most of the time

———————-You’re not going to like my tips then, Wilts.
Although I do come up with some individual 20/1 winners, even one @ 100 in the last year… I will back more than one horse in a race. So once all the horses are combined my odds per race are a lot shorter.tbh Tips should never be judged solely on odds, they should always be judged on two things combined:
Average priced winner (in percentage terms)…
Compared to…
His strike rate.An average priced winner of 7/2 is profitable if his strike rate is above 22%.
An average priced winner of 6/4 is profitable if his strike rate is above 40%.
An average priced winner of 9/1 is profitable if his strike rate is above 10%.
