Despite the vast sums spent by racing on its Racing For Change initiative TV pundit and former BHA Director Jim McGrath today publicly aired his view on primetime telly that the simple act of bringing former jumper Monsignor to the races to allow people to pet and say hello to is "one the very few genuinely good ideas that Racing For Change has had."
Ouch.
August 18, 2011 at 21:10 #368552Mr McGrath is growing increasingly curmudgeonly imo. He’s been pretty grudging with Frankel at times. His principled resignation from the BHA did not bring the changes I think he expected it would and like old Ted Heath out of power, he will probably continue sniping at those still around the board-room table. #atouchoftheVictorMeldrews
August 18, 2011 at 22:03 #368557RFC could start by handing out proper punishments for dangerous riding and beating up your mount. They didn’t with Keniry.
He literally got off scott free for the Kempton farce.August 18, 2011 at 22:11 #368559I am in shock. If that only warranted five days what must one do to get ten? Kill both jockey and horse! What was the infringement called? Careless, reckless, irresponsible, attempted manslaughter?
August 18, 2011 at 22:20 #368562I don’t think we can blame the RFC for punishments RD, not their domain that.
SC – Not sure he’s been that grudging re-Frankel. He did air some concerns over whether the horse might have done too much at Newmarket but I thought those were quite plausible views at the time and he wasn’t the only one to air them – events would show that those concerns were misplaced but I’m sure he’d be first to acknowledge that.
Think you’re right that the sniping might continue though.

Yeah, I noticed that a couple of days ago lol
I let it slide butas
you brought it up, attempted manslaughter by definition implies premeditation and makes it attempted murder

That maybe so corm, but if their remit is to make racing more wholesome in the public arena then they should make it their domain.
An extended weekend off forthat
ride is a joke. He will probably use the time pleasurably and be glad for the break.
August 19, 2011 at 08:12 #368584So Corm , maybe you could list the genuinely few if any ideas instigated by RFC , that warrant merit (Bigger saddlecloths….first names and title ..eeeeeek)
Not that many I would say ….carry on Jim… they are a bunch of shitehawks ….imo

August 19, 2011 at 11:22 #368598That’s very big of you, Jim. No need to climb up to where the angry bees reside when there’s plenty of fruit lower down, eh?
You wont hear a dicky bird from Jimbo when it comes to Howard Johnson or Nicky Henderson or Harry Findlay or any other racing "insider" who by their actions do so much to harm the sport that we love.
Pass the mint sauce.
August 19, 2011 at 12:01 #368602I’m not a fan of these over sized number cloths used at some courses. They are that big they cover half the horse and they often blow across making it impossible to work out the number, the standard number cloth works well to me, and is easily seen, well done to the courses that have kept using it!
August 19, 2011 at 17:56 #368631Did he manage to keep his eyes open whist airing these views? A particularly strange trait for a television presenter.
Has he,by any chance, aired any views on his northern chum Howard Johnson or has he restricted his thoughts to the more pressing issues affecting racing?
August 19, 2011 at 23:12 #368649The Monsignor initiative is really good, I agree with Jim on that. Limited in how many people it’ll reach I guess but still a really good idea.
September 6, 2011 at 20:23 #370244McGrath makes me sick.
A typical know all that knows nothing.
RFC are a disaster but so is Jim McGrath commentating.

Isn’t this thread about the other McGrath?

I think you may be being a bit harsh here. McGrath ( and we are talking about the C4 one here) may come across as a little smug but I don’t think he can be accused of knowing nothing.
