Insomniac,
Larry Gelb’s Great Host won the Chester Vase and Great Voltigeur in 1967, although he was well beaten in the Derby and St. Leger. He was trained by Paddy Prendergast and was a son of Abermaid who had won the 1,000gns in 1962. I can’t make out his silks but they had light and dark hooped sleeves – possibly the yellow and blue to which you refer.
January 20, 2006 at 12:19 #68437Of the non-monochrome colours, I like the RARC’s colours carried by Motivator – quite classy and amusingly similar to those carried by my friends’ point-to-pointer.
I liked by Moller colours too – I can only think of them and the Queen’s colours that have braids. Always seemed like a throwback to a golden age of racing.
Can’t stand Guy Reed’s colours. Just too painful on the eyes.
January 20, 2006 at 12:31 #68438John Hales are very catchy too.
January 20, 2006 at 16:56 #68439Sal,
Dick Hollingsworth’s colours had braid too (now with Mark Dixon).

January 21, 2006 at 20:26 #68441My favourite colours include – Lord Howard de Waldens, Prince Fahd Salmans, Bill Gredleys, Shirley Robins, Prince Khalled Abdullahs, Athos Christodoulou’s, Mrs Miles Valentine, whoever owned Vodkatini, I liked them too, Marquesa De Moratalla, theres a few I can think of.
January 27, 2006 at 17:08 #68442More Silks to include Braid:
Fiona Whitaker (Lucius, McGregor The Third etc)
John F Horn (Bigsun)
Needless to say, both feature among my favourites.
January 27, 2006 at 18:02 #68443rory
did you used to have an unrequited crush on a girl with braided hair perchance? Prefer curls myself (sadly no racing silks yet contain curls that I know of) you know so can’t really get the whole braid thing. Seems an unhealthy fixation to me.
January 27, 2006 at 18:46 #68444Thanks David,
I think it’s an issue of refinement, rather than hairstyle.
January 27, 2006 at 20:22 #68445Whoops. Sorry Rory. Forgot the  ;) in the previous post. No offence meant.:banghead:
January 27, 2006 at 20:27 #68446….and indeed none taken ;)
January 28, 2006 at 00:37 #68447The Newgate Stud colours were lovely, I like John Hales’, initially because of One Man and then over the recent years because of the bloody lovely horses he has, all of them beautiful to look at. Suny Bay’s colours because they were Suny Bay’s colours
Also like Khalid Abdullah’s silks (not so much the French ones), Howard de Walden’s were nice and classy ;) , I’m sure I’ll think of others later but my mind has gone blank.
Can’t stand Robert Sangster’s, David Johnson’s, Guy Reed’s, and whilst one of Pipe’s owners who I cannot recall the name of (pink with white stars) looks fairly inoffensive in the pages of the RP, they’re a bloody nasty toxic pink shock when you see them on the course!
January 28, 2006 at 11:19 #68448Those will be the Bonanza Boy colours. Most notably seen when the aforementioned beast came from out of nowhere to collar Errol Brown’s Gainsay in the Racing Post Chase. I still don’t know how the hell that happened.
March 16, 2006 at 14:18 #68449My fellow fans of crazy quilt will be pleased to see them being carried by Millenaire in the four-miler at Cheltham this afternoon.
