Evening all,
First post here, hope you don’t mind me asking for a bit of advice.
I’ve been looking into joining a racing club as a way of learning more about horse racing. A colleague recommended Elite although at £185 and with 12,500 members (according to their website), I was a bit put off. I’ve also read a thread on this forum form 2009 that discussed its pros and cons extensively.
I have also come across Select Racing club and Direct Racing club and wondered if anyone else had experience of them? Obviously I’m not looking to spend a fortune but it did strike me that a huge chunk of the Elite membership fee must go towards their weekly glossy newsletters.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.June 24, 2010 at 23:03 #303015PP,
Why go for an owners "racing club".
If all you want is a way to add to your knowledge and get more involved.I am a member of the West Berkshire Racing Club. Taking it’s members from the whole central south region. Membership fee is just £12 annually.
We have events at Newbury Racecourse, where racing professionals come and talk / answer questions. A racing quiz night, with loads of racing personalities taking part. Events are usually £2 for members and £5 non-members.
Then there are stable and stud visits £5 (members only) fees going to the stable staff funds. We’ve been to Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson, John Dunlop, Roger Charlton, Shadwell and Gainsborough Studs and many more in the last few years.
A small newsletter every month.
Ten to follow competitions etc.I’d imagine there’s a members club like this in every region of the country. Where are you from PP?
Alternatively, consider the Racegoers Club, they also have things like stable visits. And you can get in to most race meetings £3 cheaper.
Value Is EverythingJune 24, 2010 at 23:15 #303017Thanks for you reply.
I have come across the Racegoers club and other similar clubs but what appeals to me about owners clubs is the chance to follow the fortunes of a couple of horses closely. And the weekly reports about training, races etc sound really interesting to me.
I suppose what I’m looking for is an ‘entry level’ club in that I’m not looking to invest a huge amount to start off with, hence the reason I’m trying to find out more about Select etc.
June 25, 2010 at 20:12 #303122Hi, the Racegoers Club also run owners syndicates. For the flat this year we’ve horses with Mark Johnston and Henry Cecil. They also have national hunt horses too, one of which Identity Parade with Donald McCain won her last two hurdles. They try and have one group in the south and one in the north. Have a look at their website racegoersclub.co.uk.
I’ve been in a few of the groups and can recommend them, its not too expensive as they lease the horses.
They also arrange stud and stable visits as well as the discount admissions to the races.June 25, 2010 at 22:52 #303139Thanks Muse.
I couldn’t see how much the shares cost on the site though?June 26, 2010 at 11:38 #303210Hi, its in the region of £200 per horse, I’m not sure how many people are in each group I think its 200-250.
June 26, 2010 at 20:30 #303276There’s also ownaracehorse.co.uk. They have a selection of horses with different trainers.
June 27, 2010 at 18:44 #303454Thanks again Muse. Are you a member of ownaracehorse.co.uk?
June 27, 2010 at 19:26 #303463At the moment I’ve shares in horses with the Racegoers.
I did have a horse with ownaracehorse a couple of years ago when I was looking for something closer to home, but then that particular trainer moved. The horse I was with had a couple of runs, then picked up an injury and they transferred us over to another group which was fair enough and continued to give an interest through the season.
Don’t know where you live but they do have a few trainers around.Depends how much money you have to spend, owners groups like the Racegoers and ownaracehorse give you an interest for not much money as you don’t own the horse. If you have more to spend then maybe contact a local trainer or a trainer you like and see if they have any shares going.
June 27, 2010 at 19:30 #303464Muse that a disgraceful username.
I can’t fathom the band success personally?
June 27, 2010 at 20:49 #303488Well I suppose the band are ok … but its Muse the hurdler from the 1990s. I used to be a member of White Horse Racing who owned him !
June 27, 2010 at 22:09 #303509I dont want to spend too much as a) I dont have that much to spare and b)this is my involvement in racing clubs so I want to give it a go at ‘entry level’ first. I’ll get in touch with ownaracehorse.co.uk tomorrow.

I owned a share in Identity Parade last season and have just received the renewal notice. £180 for the year but existing members have first refusal. Can’t see there being too many shares available.
She has been back in for 3 weeks and may go over fences at some point soon.
August 3, 2010 at 20:09 #310824This is exactly where Racing For Change should be ploughing all their efforts into if they wish to encourage greater participation from the general public. Hit every punter in every betting shop in the country with a discounted opportunity to own a minute share in a horse or be a member of a racing club. For every punter who has a fraction of a share in a horse you will have his/her own family and friends persuaded to take an active interest and attending the racecourses the horse runs at, preferably by marketing each ‘syndicated’ horse to run in a particular region. Persuade the bookies to offer shares as prizes to their customers. Get the supermarkets or food manufacturers to make similar offers. The only way I see an increased racing population is if Racing for Change promotes a greater affinity between the public and the horses and for the former to have a sense of ‘ownership’ of the sport.

For me, you’re the most knowledgable and most genuine chap on the forum, very clued up. Respect Ginger.
August 3, 2010 at 21:49 #310830Re, Racegoers Club,
Identity Parade was combined with another called Nouvaire Maire who was with F Murphy, but he got injured. I think they usually give a refund to members or offer a replacement…Henry Cecil’s filly is called Violet’s Gift
and was named by a member.
They have another called Epic trained by Mark Johnston and won at Doncaster recently but lost again since. Seems to win only when I don’t back it…
For this coming jumps season they have 2 unraced NH bumper types. One with P Hobbs and the other with Mr Henderson, so it will be nice to visit their stables for those in that group.
I’ve been in a number of clubs in my time, including West Berkshire [which is fine if you live in the Lambourn area], and others not so worthy of mention…
I like Racegoers.

Nouveau Maire sadly had to be put down following an injury sustained at Catterick in February
