Has any horse ever won the Derby then remained in training and went hurdling?
I’m aware that some have ran in the Derby then went hurdling like Washington Irving but have never heard of a winner going hurdling.
Also if for example a horse was to win the derby then go on to have a season hurdling winning the triumph, then going on to be retired would it be a less attractive proposition when sent to stud ?

The St leger winner of 1961, Aurelius (Murless/Piggott), who proved sterile at stud, ran second in the Champion Hurdle a few years later.
June 2, 2011 at 20:34 #358476Day Star, the 1878 Kentucky Derby winner, was extremely successful as a hurdler and steeplechaser. Lookout, who won the KY Derby in 1890, also tried jumps but went winless and died during a race in 1896.
Beacon Hill won the 1929 Travers Stakes, fell to the claiming ranks, was retrained as a jumper in 1931 and then won 7 major steeplechase stakes.
June 3, 2011 at 07:09 #358533Putting a Derby winner over hurdles would represent a huge risk of injury ending his chances of a career at stud. It costs around 12.5% of the value you put on the horse to insure a hurdler – so if your Derby winner is worth millions, imagine the cost of the premiums!
Financial Future, trained by Mark Johnston, did win the Derby in 2003 and then go hurdling later on – but in his case, the Derby he won was the one in Switzerland. Probably not quite what you meant!

June 3, 2011 at 10:21 #358549I seem to remember (though I wasn’t actually there) Voluptuary ran in the 1881 Derby and actually led round Tattenham Corner before being beaten.
His first race over fences was the 1884 Grand National – and he won that.
I’m pretty sure he’s the only Grand National winner to have run in the Derby…

Two in fact. Motrico and La Paillon. The latter was an unlucky second in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham before being an impressive winner of the Grand Course de Haies (French version of the Champion Hurdle). He followed that up in Oct with a win in the Arc, though in fairness that year, 1947, is generally considered the weakest Arc field ever assembled.
More recently, Steppenwolfer, who finished 3rd in the Kentucky Derby in 2006 behind Barbaro, got a couple of spins over American style NSA fences a couple of years ago, without much success.

Mr. Hot Stuff, a fan favorite due to being drop-dead gorgeous and exceptionally well-bred (full brother to Colonel John, was an also-ran in the 2009 Kentucky Derby. He’s had 3 starts over hurdles so far this spring, and won his first hurdle race last Saturday. I believe his new connections are pointing him towards the novice stakes this summer at Belmont and Saratoga. I expect him to continue to improve. He’s getting a lot of his followers interested in NSA racing, which is always a good thing.

)And of course, Percussionist finished 4th in the 2004 Epsom Derby and had some modest success jumping in England before winning the Norway Champion Hurdle and the G1 American Grand National in 2010. Hasn’t had much success since then though.
June 3, 2011 at 22:20 #358723Lights Out won the Danish and Norwegian Derbies. Last seen when pulled up in a CC-chase at Cheltenham
