Read the article in the RP about BHA enquiry into the hotse that they allege ran at a Flapping Meeting.
It’s not that I’m considering going to such a meeting, but having followed racing for over 40 years i’m totally lost as to how one gets to know that a "Flapping Meeting" is taking place at The Lord-knows-where track. Is there some publication that advertises these meetings or is it a "word of mouth" style world?
Just wondering….

October 25, 2009 at 10:53 #255265UK pony racing is not flapping. Flapping is something completely different.
October 25, 2009 at 11:25 #255272Irish Flapping is often referred to as "pony racing"
UK pony racing is literally just that – for ponies ridden by children.
UK flapping is unlicensed racing (often in the Scottish borders) – the likes of Tyrone Williams, Robbie Fitzpatrick and others take part in this.
The flapping that the George Baker horse was allegedly involved in was the Irish form of flapping. If the George Baker horse is the one that the RP reports it to be then it won at Dingle in August.
October 25, 2009 at 16:33 #255325Ok, If UK Flapping is essentially "Unlicensed racing" with horses rather than ponies where do you get to hear about the events? I’m just wondering if it’s a "close community" thing in the Uk,or if it’s openly advertised.

October 25, 2009 at 22:46 #255404John, if you go back to Thursday you will find I posted on the existing thread "Flapping" which has a lot of news about the past season in the Borders especially at Langholm, Hawick, Selkirk and Irvine. There is a film of racing at Langholm on YouTube and regulars will be aware of the article on the subject in the Features section. There is also information on the informative Langholm Horse Racing Association website.
Far from being a closed community, it is all open and above board with passports, registrations etc and the people involved are good horsemen who love and care for their animals.
A short summer season takes place in the Borders, but if you are up there next season you will find flapping a good cheap day out at well organised meetings and the Langholm track is very easily accessible, being just a short walk from the town centre.
October 26, 2009 at 09:12 #255442Thanks for that, appreciated. Like I said in my original post, I’ve been into racing for over 40 years but had no real idea of the ins and outs of Flapping. Just goes to show that it’s never to late to learn!
Thanks again, J

October 28, 2009 at 00:25 #255791IS – my point was that UK pony racing (as I specified!) is not flapping, which was possibly contrary to what had been said on the thread so far; wouldn’t want anyone to get their disciplines confused.

Actually an interesting point has come to my mind. There are pony races at the flapping meetings, especially in Ireland but in the UK as well. Are these ponies barred from the Pony Racing finals at Cheltenham or from the point to point pony races which add much to fun of the amateur sport.
Anybody know?

Go on the langholm site or the you tube video and you will see that the runners on the Borders flapping circuit are not usually ponies like they are at the Dingle Derby. They are horses that have usually had a bit of form under rules.
Pony races do take place at some of the border meetings but on a limited basis at least they used to. KJ will be able to confirm if they are still held and in what quantity.
