Question 4 (from forum member Gareth Flynn)
Given that the BHA’s handicapping team calculates and records peformance ratings for every run of every horse, is it possible to make these ratings publically and freely available, and are there any plans to do so?
Please note that this question pertains to the individual ratings calculated for each horse in each race, and not simply the Official Rating of the horse as it is adjusted throughout his career, which is already available through updates on the BHA site and through the Racing Post’s online database.
Thanks in advance.
These performance ratings are the private calculations of our handicapping team which form a part of the reasoning behind the Official Rating given by them to horses. As these are the private views of our handicappers it would be wrong to publish them – albeit possibly quite lucrative! One area we will be progressing is publishing the Official Ratings, which are only currently available to the public when a horse runs. This seems a silly situation and we’re looking to remedy it.
You may also have noticed that racecourses are increasingly making use of Official Ratings in their racecards. Indeed they featured in the racecards at the Cheltenham Festival and Grand National meetings.

Would welcome that, published as soon as possible after current ORs come into force, together with the date when the next re-assessment starts.

Is there something equivalent in Britain (- I don`t speak of Timeform publications but "official ratings")?
