Joncol is Ireland’s best hope of a top class decent staying chaser at the minute since…………….well when did Ireland really have a top class decent staying chaser?
I firmly believe there are several contenders in the wings right now and whoever turns out to be the best of An Siorrac, Joncol, Pandorama, Sizing Europe (already a winner at 2m4f)and Weapons Amnesty next season will emerge as really special. It’s no secret that I’m convinced it’ll be An Siorrac
and for the top novice chases next season

Looks like Denman goes to Punchestown which will be a good yardstick to measure Joncol against. Weapons Amnesty is another you would have high hopes for though I just don’t like his trainer.
Not saying beef or salmon wasn’t good, but he definitely wasn’t great. Great horses win at Cheltenham in the most competitive championship races of the year.
April 17, 2010 at 10:38 #290778I feel that the Punchestown meeting is one to go to rather than try to find winners at. Not that I’m much good at finding winners at the best of times, but I found Punchestown well nigh impossible. However, while it’s on I just ache to be in Naas for those few days and just imagine myself there.
Totally agree moehat, Naas buzzes during the festival. Our well worn path involves Thomas Fletcher’s, The Five Lamps (open again!), Boylesports and an invigorating walk to the course along the quiet lane past the hospital.
Can’t wait
April 18, 2010 at 16:09 #291010Dunguib set to take on Solwhit, Punjabi and the returning Hurricane Fly on Friday.
Sizing Europe too will step up out of novice company on Tuesday.
I walked the course earlier and it’s in great nick. Hard to believe it was unraceable only a fortnight ago.

I AM ROCKING A TAN NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
April 18, 2010 at 16:16 #291014Hopefully the rain holds off on Friday. There’ll be some well turned out fillies around Naas on Friday evening!
April 18, 2010 at 16:59 #291022Surely Denman won’t make Punchestown with the forecast at the minute? The course are only planning a light watering but the ground must be drying out fast? I do think Joncol can put it up to him if they do meet, Joncol is Ireland’s best hope of a top class decent staying chaser at the minute since…………….well when did Ireland really have a top class decent staying chaser?
Beef Or Salmon…
His inability to perform at Cheltenham I think rules him out of the ‘top class’ division. The top class horses have to be able to perform anywhere and he was so disappointing at Cheltenham.
Denman and Imperial Commander havent performed around Kempton. Does that stop them being top class? No.
Cheltenham is a unique track and some horses just dont like it. In a way, its unfair that the whole national hunt season is so geared towards Cheltenham.
And you cant blame Beef or Salmon for just not liking travelling. He beat 3 different Gold cup winners when he raced at home. Thats top class in my eyes. In the record books, 10 grade 1’s actually puts him in the "great" catagory.

It’s hard to argue with shaund10’s reasoning.
April 19, 2010 at 10:59 #291141Anyone know if Hurricane Fly is certain of running?

I imagine only Willie Mullins knows that and I very much doubt if he’ll share his thinking with the public till the last minute, either way I’ll stick with Dunguib
April 19, 2010 at 14:24 #291174i see, reason being i want to do an early yankee covering the 4 big races on each day

So what’s the going? how far did your stick go in?
Thanks
April 19, 2010 at 16:59 #291189I’d say it’s genuine good ground. There’s a good covering of grass on the sections they haven’t raced on yet this year. I’d have no reservations about running a horse on it unless it was a mudlark.
They’ll water to maintain it the way it is anyway. Rain due on Thursday.

I’m going a similar way with my main bet, looking for horses that I really cannot see fail to make the frame at the very leaat
Now I’ve seen Saturday’s cards I’ll be doing a big EW Canadian across the five daysSizing Europe

For BillApril 19, 2010 at 18:17 #291203I think Twist Magic would be much shorter had he come straight here and missed Cheltenham. In the seasons where he fell in the Arkle and then bombed out in two Champion Chases, he won the Maghull, the Kerrygold and the Celebration Chase on his next outing. With conditions to suit, I’d anticipate him coming back to form tomorrow and if that’s the case I think he’ll win. Only nagging doubt is the absence of Walsh for whom he’s 7 from 10 over fences whilst for others he’s 1 from 8.
April 19, 2010 at 20:24 #291234I very much like the look of Sky Hall in the handicap hurdle tomorrow. He’ll either scoot in or be tailed off. I’m hoping good ground will be more suitable to the bogs he’s run on so far this season, and although it probably flatters him, a 3/4 length defeat by Solwhit last season off a 1lb higher mark sticks in the memory (pretty sure Solwhit has improoved since then). He was also running a big race in the Ladbroke at Ascot (with the likes of Sentry Duty, Khyber Kim, Mamlook) when he came down.
He obviously didn’t like chasing, but after a pipe opener back over hurdles, I reckon he’ll go close here.
Kandari finished behind him last time out but appears to be 2nd favourite!?!
April 19, 2010 at 21:15 #291245Blackstairmountain and Sizing Europe for a first day double.
