Surely these two erstwhile Lounge topics are connected? They were when I last looked.

January 7, 2009 at 16:56 #9887did anyone see the programme last night about prog rock? I caught the tail end of it as I was falling asleep [no need for sleeping pills when Emerson Lake and Palmer are on the box]…and as I was drifting off Genesis came on with Peter Gabriel and I suddenly woke up; now I was obviously around in that era, but was never into Genesis at all……I still can’t get it out of my head and would love to have seen them live at that time…..he was amazing! [was sort of dressed like a scarecrow but with a chain saw]………

January 7, 2009 at 18:34 #202230was funny watching all those blokes with waist length hair wearing capes take themselves so seriously! I did actually see Nice at Mothers in Birmingham..bet no body remembers Mothers……

even denier his head and rob a trainJanuary 7, 2009 at 19:10 #202250I saw the original "Genesis" at the Gin Mill Blues Club at Godalming and also at the Guildford Civic Centre back in the early 1970’s.
Mighty fine they were back in those days.

January 7, 2009 at 19:38 #202260I AM the number one Genesis fan on this forum. I too saw them live during the 70s, both with Gabriel and Collins as front men. Gabriel was a class above. By the way, he wasn’t dressed as a scarecrow.
I watched the programme. I was ( still am in fact ) into prog rock in a big way.
I like most of it – Yes, Pink Floyd, VDGG, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull ( interesting to hear Jimmy Saville introduce them as a he ) Greenslade, Caravan, King Crimson – though I wouldn’t class Family as prog rock, though they too were featured on the previous show. Still love them all the the same. Check out their debut album, Music In A Doll’s House. Excellent !
Gabriel’s costumes and theatrics made Genesis stand out from the rest in my opinion – and the music was more interesting.
As for ELP, I had some of their albums but now I can’t stand them. Bombastic, overblown and tuneless nonsense, though Carl Palmer was head and shoulders above the other drummers.

January 7, 2009 at 19:46 #202263At last!! A decent music thread in the Lounge!
I’ve waited three years for someone to talk about proper music rather than all this GOTH bollox you all seem to be into!!!!!
Moe! You’re my hero! Did they show the Emerson Lake and Palmer TRUCK film? You know the one? The US tour film where they have three massive trucks driving coast-to-coast filmed from a helicopter, each truck topped with the names of the band; one with Emerson, another with Lake and another with Palmer? The perfect iconic rock image.
*sigh*
January 7, 2009 at 20:00 #202268I only caught the end of the programme, but will check the radio times to see if it’s repeated; if it was on BBC4 it might be but not sure what channel it was on; I also saw Jethro Tull at Mothers..remember walking in trying to look really cool and fall base over apex [typical!]…..have got a thing about music meeting theatre having seen Bellowhead recently…..Caravan seemed rather sweet; I know I’ve got their ‘In the Land of Grey and Pink’ somewhere in the loft;……[along with Tarkus which is sh”te ] a lot of current bands seem to be influenced by King Crimson…..
January 7, 2009 at 20:06 #202269was on BBC4 so will probably be on BBC1 eventually….may be on BBC1 player? doesn’t seem to be repeated on 4 this week.
January 7, 2009 at 20:12 #202275People forget how big ELP were worldwide, Moe.
I remember watching a film which showed Carl Palmer’s galvanised steel drumkit – so heavy it had it’s own truck!
You ever heard their version of "Jerusalem"? Epic, truly epic.
January 7, 2009 at 20:35 #202278it is on BBC iplayer; Prog at the BBC it’s called and there was an earlier programme called Prog Rock Britannia which I didn’t see that will be on BBC i as well…..remember Keith Emerson using knives on his organ [ouch!] …….

The Column musical palate extends to prog rock as well, some of the gnarly old punks on here will be dismayed to learn.
But of course it does! Aren’t the likes of Cardiacs influenced as much by early Genesis as punk? I think yes.
Anyhoo, the whole reason for quoting the above Moehatism was to lead to a link to my favourite Caravan track, off the unfortunately-named “Cunning Stunts” album. Something of a favourite of Mr Peel as well, I seem to recall;

January 8, 2009 at 03:39 #202430hadn’t realized that Caravan were the prog rockers with a sense of humour; For Girls That Grow Plump in the Night..how good is that?! I still can’t get that picture of Peter Gabriel out of my head…it’s like one of those catchy tunes that you start humming at the start of the day and it won’t go away [eg You can’t Hurry Love..tum te tum……heck; I’m lumbered with that now for a bit……].only slightly more sinister [and his west country accent is pretty awful]
