Paco Boy vs. Goldikova (Rd 2.)

    Who’s winning this one then?

I’ve got to go with Paco Boy. I think he ws unlucky and pressed the button to late (because of traffic) at Ascot. He was gaining on Goldikova but this is on Goldikova’s back yard…

    Its a tuff one.

    PB for me though.

Goldikova was headed by Paco Boy at Ascot and pulled out more having been in front far too long.

She was simply too good and I see no reason why that will change.

    Anyone got the field?

I think Paco was very unlucky in Ascot. In a sprint Goldi was better placed than Paco and I think he will reverse the placings.

THERE is likely to be a small field when Goldikova goes for her eleventh Group 1 victory in Sunday’s Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

    RELATED LINKS

    Hungerford Stakes card
Nine horses remained in Europe’s richest mile race at Wednesday’s forfeit stage and one of the two British-trained runners left in the race, Brian Meehan’s Arcano, will not be in the line-up.
Arcano won the Darley Prix Morny at Deauville last year, but owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s racing manager, Angus Gold, said: "We’re just having a look and we’re intending to run him in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on Saturday."

That means that Paco Boy will be the only foreign-trained horse in the race and his trainer Richard Hannon said "He’s in excellent shape."

Makfi will be ridden for the first time by Christophe Soumillon and the 2,000 Guineas winner is on the comeback trail after a throat infection, which led to him running below expectations in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Robert Collet looks like he will saddle Royal Bench, who was a Listed winner at Deauville last time out. He said: "The colt is a definite runner and Ioritz Mendizabal will be in the saddle. It looks a hard race to win."

Another main contender is Fuisse, four-length winner of the Prix Messidor at Maisons-Laffitte last month. Only Green and Saying will act as pacemakers to Goldikova.

Following 8.2mm of rain the going at Deauville on Wednesday was good to soft to soft, but there is very little rain forecast before Sunday.

    Some Facts:

Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard-Jacques Le Marois.
    (3 year-olds and over, a mile, Group I, 600,000 Euros).

This race was first run in 1921, in 2010, it will be run for the 89th time. Up until 1952 it was only open to 3 year-olds. The race was not run in 1940 and took place at Maisons-Laffitte in 1941, 1942, 1943 and 1945, and at Longchamp in 1944. The latter is the only year in which the race was not run on a straight course. Record time: 1′ 34” 40/100 in 1997 by Spinning World. Fourteen runners have gone to post 5 times – in 1955, 1959, 1965, 1966 and 1992. Three runners, the minimum, have gone to post twice, in 1923 and 1950. in 2001, Proudwings (trained in Germany and ridden by Christophe Soumillon) crossed the line first, only to be demoted for having hindered several opponents.

    Foreign winners.

The Prix Jacques Le Marois has only thrown up nine foreign winners up until 2010: 2 from Germany – Priamos (1970) and Lirung (1986) both trained by Heinz Jentzch; five from England, Lear Fan (1984), Sayyedati (1993), Dubai Millennium (1999), Muhtathir (2000) and Dubawi (2005); and one from Japan, Taiki Shuttle (1998).

    Fillies and mares

Fillies and mares have won twenty-four times, almost all if them truly exceptional animals: Zariba (1922) Prix Morny, 2nd in Prix de Diane; Pearl Cap (1931) Prix de Diane, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe; En Fraude (1937) Prix de Diane; Hula Dancer (1963) Grand Critérium, Thousand Guineas, Moulin de Longchamp, Champion Stakes; Astaria (1965) Prix Vermeille; Lianga (1975) Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, July Cup; Flying Water (1977) Thousand Guineas, Champion Stakes; Luth Enchantée (1983) Prix du Moulin de Longchamp; Miesque (1987, 1988) Breeders’ Cup Mile twice; Sayyedati (1993) Thousand Guineas; East of the Moon (1994) Prix de Diane; Banks Hill (2002) Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf; Six Perfections (2003) Breeders’ Cup Mile and Goldikova (2009) Breeders’ Cup mile – twice.

Other Classic winners have had to be content with second place: Nikellora (1945) Prix de Diane, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe; Imprudence (1947) Poule d’Essai, 1,000 Guineas, Oaks; Pomaré (1952) Poule d’Essai; Monade (1963) Oaks; Natagora (2008) 1,000 Guineas.

    Only the best

The Prix Jacques Le Marois winner’s list is a veritable who’s who of Classic winners and top stallions. The first colt to win the race was Sir Gallahad, also winner of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains who, when exported to the USA, become champion sire of sires 4 times and champion brood mare sire 12 times. Other notable winners include Cillas (1938), Dogat (1943), Priam (1944), Coaraze (1945),Sayani (1946), Djelal (1947), Amour Drake (1949), Klairon (1955), Buisson Ardent (1956), Luthier (1968), Priamos (1970), Dictus (1971), Lyphard (1972), Kalamoun (1973), Nonoalco (1974), Kenmare (1978), Irish River (1979), Polish Precedent (1989), Priolo (1990), Hector Protector (1991), Exit to Nowhere (1992), Spinning World (1996 and 1997), Taiki Shuttle (1998) and Dubai Millennium (1999), Dubawi (2005), Librettist (2006), Manduro (2007) and Tamayuz (2008).

Many great horses have also finished second: Niceas (1923), Astérus (1926), Drap d’Or (1937), Fanatique (1943), Cobalt (1953), Fine Top (1954), High Top (1972), Vitiges (1976), Blushing Groom (1977), Bellypha (1979), To Agori Mou (1981), Green Forest (1982), Warning (1988), Linamix (1990), Daylami (1997), Slickly (1999) and Sendawar (2000).

The going at Deauville today was very soft according to RP. Can someone please tell me how that compares to British going readings. Is that heavy or just soft? Out of interest, Goldikova won the 2009 Prix Rothschild on soft and has won many times on good to soft, but her worst performance came in the 2009 Prix d’Ispahan on soft ground.

    Some thoughts:

Having seen the state of the ground and the rain falling there today you’d have to wonder if they will all turn up?! :|

Haven’t connections of 1st & 2nd favs stated concerns about soft going?
(even though they have both won on it!)

I can recall Freddie saying that ‘Goldi’ really doesn’t like it now for sure and that was one reason why earlier in the season he was less happy to commit to another crack at the Breeders’ Cup Mile – (due to the ground maybe going real soft out there)

This race may lack in numbers but it has quality especially some straight track specialists! :o
Was surprised to hear the commentator on Atr saying that the Queen Anne was much stronger! :o

Though he does have a couple of L’s to find on other snippets…
I wonder how the 4l beating ‘Fuisse’ gave to ‘Beacon Lodge’ giving 4lbs will compare to that of the 6& 3/4 that ‘Paco’ gave him off levels? :?:

3yr old colts vs 3yr old fillies? – ‘Music Show’ got to within 3l of an eased down ‘Goldi’… 8)

On good ground none of this may matter…as it’s a match between two isn’t it?! – but what if there’s a big ‘H’ in the description come tomorrow?! :D

In the RP report on ‘Vision’ (online) they have the going as heavy! Confusion re: the going as per normal!

The French sites have it as very soft…

That day ‘Goldi’ was beat by ‘Never On Sunday’ there were a couple of wide margin wins and that one went down as a funny result (for Freddie) her being beat.
I recall that they were left scratching their heads and Freddie said that there was a rail advantage even!
The ground was also blamed but that didn’t make total sense in that ‘Never’ was a horse who the trainer had stated also wanted it good or better!

You can see he results here:

    Egg on face time.

Well, no one ever takes notice of me anyway, so it doesn’t matter.

Race is billed as Goldikova v Paco Boy, Part Deux.

The 3yos have been written off as crap. Erm, excuse me, that would be the 3yo middle distance horses. The 3yo milers ARE good.

    Will be cheering on Makfi.

    8/13 could be buying money.

Goldikova to win by a length and a half but PB may NOT be the main challenger!
