Buick arguably made too much use of his mount early on in the Jockey Club and today in Prix de Diane Moore didn’t make enough use of Bedtime Story. He was effectively shut out at the back of the peleton before the long turn (1/3 of distance per Mssrs Holt/Hoiles) Left at the back of the long Indian file he inevitably met turbulence when forced wide to make his run. Compare the urgency shown by Soumillon in getting the winner stuck inside the peleton to that shown by Moore (even allowing for poor draw) I’m afraid this would be in the “Bad Rides” department tonight if there wasn’t a fresh entry!

Your assessment pays absolutely no attention to Bedtime Story’s form and her temperament, Zilzal.
Had looked a potential top class filly early on as a two year old with four victories including at Royal Ascot. But has ruined her chance by pulling too hard in ALL her three runs since. A bit more promise in a first time hood on her latest run in the Pouliches (AT A MILE) but still raced freely towards the rear that day.

This hard puller was going up in trip to 1m2f…
…And yet you’re complaining “Moore didn’t make enough use of Bedtime Story” and should have shown more “urgency”.

Form tells you that had Moore done what you ask, Bedtime Story would’ve been rank, pulling far too hard and lost the race in the first furlong… And also quite possibly having such a bad experience it could’ve played on her mind for the rest of her career.

Of course, dropping any horse out the back leaves it with ground to make up and sometimes they’re going to fail. But Bedtime Story had a pacemaker to ensure a good pace anyway (fastest of the day on Racing Post Standard). ie The pace ensured being out the back wouldn’t have inconvenienced her much anyway. Probably beaten by a better filly… And this run was her best for a long time anyway.

Far from being a “bad ride”, it was imo an exceptionally good ride.
Just didn’t end up winning. :rose:
