As you know Leopardstown have a meeting where after racing all of the top trainers bring their Cheltenham horses and have a racecourse gallop after the racing has finished.
When i was at Kempton last week for the RP Chase it was announced that Imperial Commander was to have a jog round the course after racing and duly a lot of people stayed to watch and with hindsight due to the London train being packed to high heaven i wish i had stopped to see this.
Now this has got me thinking which is probably a dangerous thing for me to do but i have an idea.
Why not have a Cheltenham Gallops after racing on RP Chase day using either the turf until the light goes or have it on the Polytrack using the lights when it is required to turn them on,
Im sure people would love to see the big yards bring their horses up so fans can see them do a nice piece of work before the Festival and it would add a new dimension to the build up.Any thoughts anybody?
March 7, 2010 at 14:55 #280992Geographically, wouldn’t Newbury yesterday be better?
March 7, 2010 at 21:44 #281042Probably most trainers would prefer to take their horse to their local track. Henderson had been planning to gallop some of his at Newbury today but because there was a hard frost forecast he worked them at home. Last year he took some to Newbury and some to Kempton. If I remember rightly, didn’t Kempton open up a catering outlet specially?
Does anyone know who was working after racing at Donny yesterday?
What I’d like to see is trainers here putting up gallops footage, like they do in the US. I love watching Sherifs fottage of Zenyatta and Life is Sweet.
March 8, 2010 at 22:45 #281265My sister went to Donny on Saturday – says Arcalis was one of those working at Doncaster. Plus a big impressive chestnut, but horse wasn’t identified that she could catch. Went well though! I can’t remember if she said it she thought it was one of Ferdy’s?
March 9, 2010 at 17:41 #281375Pre Cheltenham gallops should have all gallopers included in the race card with their weight and number cloth and jockeys. This way the public interest is better served and the transparency needed to form an correct judgment is taken care of,which should be the main purpose of the racing authority in having such gallops.A track commentator should also be used.Maybe one is,I have never been there.
March 10, 2010 at 06:06 #281440There is no need to bring horses. I am only saying if you have horses using the racecourse to gallop you do it openly and transparently. It is up to the trainer to decide what horses to bring or whether he brings any.
March 10, 2010 at 13:37 #281479If the trainers want to gallop in public I just want the public to know who is galloping. After all everyone seems to think the racing depends on the public. We have the official clocker here who tells the public the times of every gallop of every horse. All gallops are done in public.

Big Chestnut from HJ’s sounds like Back In Focus to me, very impressive physically and looks a real star, 2013 Gold Cup winner

All of Ferdy Murphys horses wore number cloths and the commentator identified them all during the gsllop. Don’t think HJ’s horses wore numbers but not 100% sure.
Ferdy’s gallop was also on ATR on Sunday
