This was always going to be about old regular A Momentofmadness for me, even more so after his late withdrawal from The Symphony. Sadly, the 20’s he was then, isn’t about now, and he’s top of the market at 8’s. Can’t really argue with that, as he should be favourite. Very risky Antepost though, considering his antics at the start, and only if he got hammered in the betting would I consider him before Final Decs.

    Others who appeal…..

    Danzeno 14’s
    Justanotherbottle 16’s
    Ornate 33’s
    Orvar 16’s
    Thegreatestshowman 33’s

….but at the moment, main interest is the Fav.

    A Momentofmadness

Looked at my old mate Konchek for this, but was not too chuffed to see a horse with such a poor strike rate close to the top of the market.

Will carry on scratching my head……

Impressive enough last time Tatling, but agree about that strike rate. Hard to rule out though.

Still scratching my head for that backup horse. Was moving towards Ornate, but that 33’s has been snapped up, so I’ll not be having a go early doors, unless Madness gets proper support.

Had a look at Mountain Peak, seems to be well improved as a 5yo but will need to be off a career high mark of 99.

Connections seem to think he’s a 5f specialist, and his best form is over 5f but that’s understandable as he’s not had much chance to prove otherwise! Has won over 6f and a good 2nd over 5.5 previously, albeit off quite a bit lower. Am hoping the 5.5f should be ok.

Positives are Atzeni is jocked up, and he’s clearly in the form of his life, ground versatile, and has quite a nice strike rate.

It’s a real puzzler this but I’ve come down to an e/w on this lad, albeit with limited confidence. At 12s I’m happy to wait until raceday, can’t see him hugely shorter following final decs.

Loved this race since our entire office (colleague had a leg in a horse in Muir’s yard) was big time on Texas Gold years ago. Got done in a VERY long photo, which was a sickener at the time but is a brilliant memory from happier times for me 😔.

Think the weather will play a big part in the race as warmer conditions are forecast for the w/e thus it’s likely entries wanting give underfoot won’t be risked.
Tatling ….quite right about connections regarding Mountain Peak as best at the minimum trip however I don’t believe it’s that the horse doesn’t stay, has won over 7f on a/w,but simply all his best numbers are at 5f.In fact registered career high figures last time and must be considered progressive as he’s consistently improved this season. The only two times soft has been mentioned in the going the resulting performance left something to be desired although this is based on limited evidence. So the drying ground would be of benefit.
I very much liked Count D’orsay’s performance at Haydock but the drying ground wouldn’t be in his favour.
I may end up having a selection but at present I prefer to let things unfold.
    good luck to all

Tough race. Midgely is often the man to follow in these, and he has Saluti in good form. He’ll do for me.

A Momentofmadness opens at 7’s, and that price should hopefully hold until Saturday morning at least. I’d love to beat the 8’s, but still holding off.

Unfortunately, most of the others on the shortlist still there, so that’ll be a tough one.

I was cracking these big handicaps earlier in the season, but with form settled down many of the runners are in their place as far as the handicapper is concerned. I have more than half the field within 7lbs of the top. A minor interest in a couple:

My top rated is ARECIBO (9/1) who was right in the mix last year off a mark a few pounds higher than this last year. Not far away on a few occasions this term and ‘ran into one’ in Aljady last time. Now on a mark where he can get his head in front.

A pound or two below the top but steadily progressive is HAN SOLO BERGER (33/1) who has been running consistently in a slightly lower class. Ran better than final position suggests when 8th at this level to Acclaim The Nation over a similar trip at York two runs ago.

I fancied Danzeno for The Ayr Gold Cup, but this looks like the plan going by his price, so I’ll stick with him at 12-1

I didn’t think I’d have a bet in this as it looked very tricky and a lot of the fancied ones have been well found but Meraas looked significantly overpriced to me. If he hadn’t run at York last time and we had his 6th in the Stewards Cup as his most recent form where he led for a long way and to my eye looked at worst the 4th best horse, coupled with his previously progressive profile, I think he’d be a single figure price pushing for favouritism. The last run is very excusable he was uncharacteristically slowly away and on soft ground, he has disappointed on soft already this season at Newmarket. He’s the only 3 year-old here and they supplied not only the winner in Oxted last year but also Encrypted and Justanotherbottle both ran well in the previous 2 renewals, they often are significantly underrepresented and although this is slightly lazy (without having had the time to do the full research) they appear at face value to outperform expectations in that regard. I’ve gone e/w with 6 places on offer with SkyBet.

I’ve went with two outsiders here with Orvar 25-1, and Deputise 66-1. Both are for 6 places

Didn’t quite get 8’s, but took the 15-2 for A Momentofmadness.

Totally missed the price on Danzeno, while Ornate being a Non Runner tidies it up a bit, so Justanotherbottle is the EW.

    A Momentofmadness 15-2
    Justanotherbottle 22’s EW 6 Places

Justanotherbottle for me , signs of a return to form and the headgear to help , Ryan’s has had plenty of nicely priced winners this year

Monster gamble foiled on Danzeno. Hats off to Pricewise, no idea how he found that one.
