Not at all sure what happened to this fella in the 4.10 Pontefract but the RP has him listed as fatally injured.
Due to a torrential downpour the race wasn’t very clear. He appeared to come out of that stalls with the blinds still on, or snagged around his nose band – it could be seen flapping round his muzzle. Didn’t appear to be travelling at all and was right out the back. He then went out of shot and when the camera picked them up after turning into the straight he could be seen in the background, down and clearly in distress on the other side of the rails, with Barry McHugh scrambling towards him.
Whatever happened, it was a bizarre and unpleasant incident and condolences to the Wainwright yard and all associated with the horse.
August 6, 2011 at 10:35 #367354RP had this to say:
Slowly into stride and well behind, ridden along and tailed off when staggered, unseated rider and fell 2f out, fatally injured.
Sounds as if it might have been a heart attack/stroke sort of thing, but very sad none the less.
RIP.
August 6, 2011 at 10:50 #367360That’s the conclusion I reached as well, Black Gold. Terribly sad, as he seemed to be having his best season ever.
August 6, 2011 at 14:52 #367401That was what I assumed (seeing him down reminded me very much of Detroit City) – what I’m hoping is that it wasn’t brought on by having the hood round his nose and was just a horrible coincidence.
