Sister thread to the documentary thread, any thoughts on the various racing documentaries or radio shows available.

For me the Final Furlong podcast is a great listen. Think Kevin Blake is one of the best pundits around. Seem to have good guests who actually have character. Only criticisms I would had was often it would be early in week and when analysing upcoming races they would often have not even looked. They have now gone 2 shows a week so that should be rectified. Genuinely one of highlights of my week when this is released.

Racing postcast is also ok but very tip centred and with so many inputting you basically end the podcast with about 30 tips. Think Maddie has done well for someone so young, seems genuinely enthusiastic and eager to learn and some credit should go to Bruce for giving her the platform.

Racing club talksport. Not my cup of tea, find it a bit pretentious and lots of trumpet blowing, comes across very old boys club.

William hill radio- don’t listen much anymore but used to be worth a listen. Some of the banter with Ken Pitterson and the pim got tiring. Also held Andy holding up as an absolute oracle when in reality his strike rate was awful.

Final furlong is great with Blake and Keenan and McNamara and ryle etc but Kennedy is beginning to annoy me, with his over the top praise for everything and just general waffle.

    Great show otherwise

FFP have started a 2nd podcast after Decs, so their analysis will be more current so to speak.

I like it still….listened since the start, yes it’s changed, and it can be argued its got worse in time…it is missing the likes of Noel Hayes, and has brought in lesser such as Ryle. Personally i listen still, but it could do with a little improvement.

Racing Post is fine, nothing great.

On The Hunt is good, if a still a little novice….could be good in time.

Monday Night Review, is worth a go too. On soundclound..

FFP was great for a while but has nosedived recently – lost some of their best regular guests and becoming too reliant on inside jokes you’d need a dire sense of humour to actually laugh at. Blake really doesn’t come across well on camera of behind the mic IMO either, far better in print.

Genuinely can’t listen to it any more.

I do like William Hill Radio – steady analysis, always admire people who do the low-grade form and put the work as those judges do.

Not strictly horse racing, The Business of Betting Podcast covers many different topics relating to wagering on sports, and for a relatively new podcast has had quite a list of industry heavy hitters on there already. Its a very interesting pod and well worth a listen imo.

I agree with some of the sentiments regarding FFP. I first started listening to it about a year ago. Now it does seem to have gone more towards the inside-jokes and hashtags with Ryle, at the expense of the actual analysis that Delargy and Keenan brought. Blake and Kennedy are capable of analysis themselves, but the tone of the show changes completely depending on the guests they have and not always for the best.

The Racing Postcast is a decent listen. Frank Hickey seems to be the only tipster they have who’s capable of making a long-term profit, but the rest of them are fine to listen to. My only gripes would be that the show seems like an excuse to promote Paddy Power, and that Tom Segal talks over the other people on the show.

Have to agree with FFP, used to be very good but recently appears to have gone down a bit with the innuendo and just what I would call waffle. No real insight at themoment and the twice weekly pod would be fine if the Friday one came out at a decent time rather than so late.
Kennedy is in danger of becoming another Steve Wright, very sycophantic and never calling a spade a spade.
Still there is not another that I have found that covers racing as well so will continue to listen for the time being until something better comes along.

It has definitely dropped off since the times of Noel Hayes and Cathy Fry…

However, i agree droffats…there isn’t currently another one that’s better.

As i have said, give The Monday Night Review on Soundcloud a go….its worth a listen alright.

I quite like the Jumps Racing Podcast, though it is best when they get a good guest on. Paul Ferguson has enhanced the pod when he has been on it. Anyone else listen to it?

I have only just started listening to FFP. I find it is too long, for me, and too full of in-jokes.

I started listening to it when it first arrived and found it average enough….but i haven’t listened to it with the addition of guests…so that might be interesting, i have it on subscribe so i will check the next episode and see.

On FFP, it was at its best 3 or so years ago, its still for me, worth a listen as a i drive + travel a fair bit.

The Monday Night Review would be more notebook horses from the weekend, antepost bets and probably a bit more useful in that sense. I find the FFP, is more for banter and discussion opposed to tipping.

MNR has younger people getting into racing, one writes his own book, one works for the press association, one travels to dubai for the carnival to work on dubaitv and the presenter works for OLBG…give it a go..

Certain podcasts aren’t suited to everyone, some want a degree of banter, some want serious form study…best to try them all!

As I work in an office I try and keep myself plugged in as much as possible when working. List of stuff I listen to –

Luck On Sunday (available on RUK website) – Brilliant show, led by Nick Luck with fresh interviews every week, 2 minute roundup of the hottest topics of the week etc. It’s class.

Sunday Forum & Monday View (ATR app) – Both highlight shows to an extent, SF good when the likes of Muscat & John Berry are on. Not so much when Mccririck is. MV is done by a Timeform rep looking at how they rated the weeks racing, can be decent for a pointer or two.

MNR aka Monday Night Review (Soundcloud) – Done by a few lads who I speak away to and they give a good balanced account of the racing over the week and a few tips both notebook & antepost. Adam tipped up OFA for the National alongside a big Becher chase winner last season.

Racing Postcasts (Pod App) – Good on a Friday if you get Frank Hickey & Paul Kealy on it, but when they’re not it can be a bit muggy tbh. Mondays are decent with Maddy & Tom Segal giving decent insight, even if Tom can be a bit OTT.

Final Furlong (Pod App) – Still enjoy it a lot, gives me a few laughs and some decent insight from Blake although it can be tedious at times when the brilliance of Delargy & Keenan aren’t on.

Only Balls & Horses (Pod App) – Oli Bell of ITV, Tom Stanley of RUK & Nick Goff prev a trader now a ‘pro punta’ discuss the football, racing, NFL etc. and give their insight, tips and general chit chat on sport. Then round it up with best bets. Really enjoy It, Goffs quality football insight is brilliant if not a little lost as I’m non-existent as a football punter.

Matchbook (Pod App) – Racing section is decent enough, really like Delargy’s analysis and Stephen Harris gives a decent insight also. NFL & Golf sections during their relevant seasons are worth a listen also if that’s your thing.

Racehour (Soundcloud) – Ran by a couple of good lads who work for Betbright and they sometimes have good guests on. Not done frequently but worth a listen when they are.

On The Hunt (Soundcloud) – Podcast by 3-4 enthusiastic lads who give their tips for the weekends racing generally on a Friday.

Good stuff Kev, thanks for sharing that list, few in there I haven’t seen before.

Final Furlong should stick to Blake, Delargy and Keenan imo. Granted its not always possible to have them all on together some weeks, but its at its best when they do.

I love W Hill racing radio and now that I’m retired I listen to it most days. I love the banter and Ken Pittersons paddock picks are really good. I don’t really have access to the others, though.

Anyone listen to the Final Furlong preview tonight with Emmett Kennedy, Kevin Blake, Tony Keenan, Sean Boyce and Barry Geragthy?

Not their best I have to say. Emmett is just becoming painful to listen to and his knowledge is not up to scratch at all, asking Geragthy if he will pick Edwulf when it was announced earlier today that he wouldn’t, he said it was interesting that Robbie Power chose Sizing John ahead of our duke. Power didn’t have any choice he’s Potts retained rider. And just general stupid nonsense being spouted by him at every opportunity made this a really painful watch.

The others were more insightful, particularly Blake and Keenan both of whom I like just from their no nonsense nature. Geragthy is not really entertaining enough to be on such a high profile panel, obviously he is knowledgeable but he came across as generally disinterested and it was hard for him to raise a smile, not in fairness if I were him I’d probably have reacted the same to a lot of the **** Kennedy was coming out with.

Sean Boyce as host with Davy Russell and Tony Mullins (or perhaps John Francome) instead of Kennedy and Geragthy would have been ideal for me. Overall not their best in terms of entertainment but maybe in time their tips will prove to be good.

To be fair even The Racing Post ran a story as to how Robbie Power had to choose between the 2 horses with quotes from him.
