…the lads (days) of being able to make a living betting on UK horse racing (unless you work within the racing industry and are privy to inside information) are numbered.

The game’s straight enough at the top level – Cheltenham Festival over jumps, Royal Ascot on the Flat etc – but below that it’s bad, bad, news and today’s events ensure this won’t be changing for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, more and more new punters turning 18 are more interested in betting on ”the beautiful game” than on sleazy old horse racing.

Football’s on the telly, it’s (overall) straighter and it’s the global sport, so future liquidity is assured.

    ….an important post

Don’t forget FOBTs! The pain-free way of making money in LBOs!

The entire levy debate is regarding this issue, under the thin veil of the bookies taking the huff over Turf TV. Racing now relies a lot more on bookmakers than bookmakers rely on it, and the sport needs to adapt like the industry that supports it has done already.

Ladbrokes practically run one already! Virtual football to run alongside Lucksin Downs during the summer! Happy Days! At the end of the day it all spells profit for those that make the rules, so who are we to stop it?

Racing hasn’t changed it’s always been the same. Things like the Big brother is watching you "Fallon case", we could certainly do without. Something I have tried to emphasise oin another post.

Times change and as we know Football on the Telly is wordwide. Racing on the otherhand is not as popular and is even banned in many countries because gambling is illegal.

But every so often you get an Arkle, a Red Rum or a Dessie who become household names like Ronaldo has in football. When that happens people pay attention and veiwing figures and attendances go up. The National will always draw attention and of course the Derby and Royal Ascot.

Children are better advised these days as well and no doubt are warned about the pitfalls of gambling. The number one targets by the do gooders are probably horse racing and casinos.

So the sport suffers but it is along way of dead.

Racing is one of the most visually exciting sports on the planet……a great place for everyone from the Queen of England to little old me where you can go along for a great day out or have a few quid on for entertainment on a Saturday.

It may not be as popular as a betting medium as it was but it’s still up there.
Nice to know some people are trying to look at what else can be done.

This football is straighter thing always annoys me. When a player is flinging themself to the ground writhing around in so called pain it’s seen as "part of the game" when in fact its cheating. Getting a penalty by diving or getting someone sent off is cheating and in all probability affects the result. So by doing this they are cheating the football punters out of their money and as already mentioned the money bet on football is increasing so it is not insignificant amounts, yet you don’t see diddley squat reported about it. I know footballers dont necessarily do it for monetary purposes, although you could make a case for extra win bonuses for winning championships or cup matches etc, they are still doing punters out of their money and of course possibly the opposition. How many court cases have we seen where a footballer is taken to court because he dived to get the winning penalty thereby cheating the opposition and losing punters out of there money ?

I also know that football doesn’t rely on betting as horse racing does but at the end of the day cheating is cheating.

An interesting comparison re. cheating Aaron, but I don’t think it’s really comparing like with like. A player, by diving and trying to get a penalty, is not trying to LOSE . A bent jockey is. And there is the subjectivity of a 3rd party in football – the referee. No such potential fly-in-the ointment for a jockey who takes a pull.
Although what such a player does can be called "cheating" – (he is trying to gain an unfair or undeserved advantage at the expense of his opponent), a better comparison within a race might be a jockey manouevring his horse in such a way as to hem in an opponent or to check another’s run. The jockeys’ manouevre might not win him the race, but it may give him an advantage. In both cases the jockey (as with the footballer) s trying to WIN. The jockey doesn’t know the ultimate outcome, neither does the player who dives. The player might not get the penalty; his team might miss the penalty and even if it is scored his side might still not win.
A BENT footballer can only be compared to a bent jockey when he tries to LOSE. Not something you see in top-class games I’d say.
