I’m tracing the pedigree of a horse for a friend and although I am great in telling them exactly what both Phardante’s (the sire) and Buckskin’s (the damsire) respective progenies have achieved within the National Hunt sphere I am rather stuck on telling them what these great sires achieved themselves on the Flat. Would anyone be kind enough to post their race records. I know they were great stayers, I think Phardante was 2nd in a St Leger, but I can’t find the info that readily.
If it helps my friend’s horse is Won Too Phar (raced three times and was with Gary Moore) whom I am proud to have discovered through his grand dam (Lakelands Girl) is related to Sizing Europe!
April 30, 2008 at 19:24 #160832Phardante was trained by Guy Harwood for Simon Karmel. As a 2yo (1984) he won his first 4 races from 6 furlongs to nearly a mile. Well beaten in the Royal Lodge on his last outing though and was subsequently given 8-13 in the Free Handicap.
As a 3yo he ran 6 times – each time over at least 12 furlongs. He didn’t manage to win though. He finished 8th in the Derby, behind Slip Anchor,
and his best performance was running 2nd in the St Leger to Oh So Sharp. As a 4yo he ran nine times and got his head in front twice. In Belgium he won the Grand Prix de Bruxelles at Groendael but his best win was in the Jockey Club Stakes, at Newmarket, where he suprisingly beat Slip Anchor.
As a 5yo he ran 7 times, winning the Jockey Club Stakes for the second time in May. He was also 2nd to Celestial Storm in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at the July Meeting. He was at his best from 12 furlongs to 2 miles and retired to Rathbarry Stud for I£ 1,000 in 1988.
Other one to follow…

Great stuff. It’s very much appreciated. That’s what is great about this forum.
April 30, 2008 at 20:04 #160836April 30, 2008 at 20:49 #160839About a year out of date, but it might be of limited interest – Sizing Europe’s half brother went through the sales ring here – http://www.tattersalls.ie/sales/june2007/00000057.pdf
Gives quite a good picture of how they are related.
About Phardante and Buckskin, I tried and failed to think of decent animals bred on the cross – it hasn’t actually been that successful with 30-odd foals and only two black-type animals produced; a French fillies’ hurdle winner (La Zingarella) and a French chaser (Rubissimo). Strange really with two generally successful sires.

Perhaps the cross contains too much stamina and not enough speed. Buckskin could produce some really slow (not to mention unsound) horses.
April 30, 2008 at 22:21 #160860Not suprisingly Buckskin, who was born in 1973, didn’t run as a 2yo.
As a 3yo, trained in France by Angel Penna for Daniel Wildenstein, he ran just three times, winning in the provinces over 10 1/2 furlongs and 1 mile 6 furlongs.
As a 4yo he had the misfortune to come up against another stellar stayer in Sagaro. In the first half of the year he won the Prix de Barbeville, Prix Jean Prat and Prix du Cadran at distances from 14 – 20 furlongs.
Sagaro got his revenge in the Ascot Gold Cup with Buckskin back in second place. He didn’t win again that season – being tried a couple of times at 12 furlongs.
He started off 1978 with Peter Walwyn – for whom he ran in the newly christened Sagaro Stakes at Ascot (following the retirement of the three times Gold Cup hero). He was favourite for this race but trailed home second behind Shangamuzo after having some foot problems in training.
He was then an easy winner of the Prix du Cadran – at that time the most valuable race for stayers in Europe.
He was fancied to win the Gold Cup but faded in the straight to finish 4th to Shangamuzo. His owner blamed Pat Eddery and shortly afterwards moved all his horses to Henry Cecil. Henry didn’t get him back until he won the Doncaster Cup (heavily bandaged) and a few weeks later trounced his field in the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket. Despite getting beaten in the Gold Cup he was rated 10-0 in the end of season handicap – joint champion with Ile de Bourbon and Sanedtki.
As a 6yo, again for Henry Cecil, he ran just the twice, winning the Henry II Stakes in a canter before finishing 2nd to another Cecil champion Le Moss.
He was subsequently retired to Fawley Stud at a price of 1,500 pounds.
Cecil called him, at the time, "undoubtably the greatest horse I have trained, and the bravest". I suspect he just wasn’t the soundest.
May 1, 2008 at 07:29 #160892Interesting to see the comment re. Buckskin’s foot problem. I seem to remember that he ended up running in a plastic shoe to try and alleviate the problem.
His move to the Cecil stable came about as a result of a spat between Peter Walwyn and Daniel Wildenstein, the owner – surprise, surprise! How ever did such a man come to be blessed with wonderful fillies like Allez France, Pawneese & co?

May 2, 2008 at 09:20 #161048Specifically Buckskin’s foot problems were as a result of corns.
Must have been like running for a bus with a stone in each shoe.
