Today’s qualifier won by a horse that needed to win it to have any hope of a mark high enough to get a run in March.
The runner up didn’t need to win – it was having a bit of a go, but the same imperative to be bang on it fitnesswise today just wasn’t there.
The winner wasn’t much of a price, but IMO it’s such an important factor in these qualifiers.
Look at who needs to win and who only needs to place – or doesn’t need to do either!

Obviously Maxxum was really going to be trying but I didn’t back him just in case there was anything else in there to do him on the line if one bad jump or a hampering in the big field at the wrong moment slowed him down.
December 28, 2022 at 16:13 #1628627Good Time Jonny @ 33/1
Done quite well lasting this long for a first Cheltenham ante post bet, nearly made 2023 but fell at the last hurdle.
He was not priced up anywhere for the race when i looked this morning and i might just of had a bet at that price before the race so quite happy getting it now considering. He was running in 2 mile chases and a couple of mile maidens on the flat before this and hoped he could run well today.
His best run for a good while and certainly looked like he was trying to get in the top 4 which gives some hope he could be heading here. A good idea changing it to 4 places to get in i think.
December 28, 2022 at 16:18 #1628629Yes I didn’t realise they’d changed it to 4 places- at least we don’t have the slow bike race for 5th and 6th.

Definite integrity boost to these races.

Hoping for a nice steady away run tomorrow and could well be all systems go now. He better not win that’s for certain.
February 23, 2023 at 14:30 #1636676Very unusual for me not to have an early Antepost in this, but as I’d hoped to see The Big Galloper go for this, his absence meant I nearly made it to March without a bet.
Decided though to go for Thanksforthehelp. They went to Punchestown with him last year, and he ran well enough, and I just think he’s better than we’ve seen. Has to actually do the business at Chepstow first, but NRNB deals with that.
He won’t be my only bet on this, but it’ll be one of the market leaders I’ll be adding, so no rush. Threw a few quid his way, and took the 20’s, though I’ve got more at 16’s (win) with him.

February 23, 2023 at 23:37 #1636793I’m on Perc Legallois at 33’s for this but interested in seeing if Bear Ghylls qualifies on Saturday, he’d be of interest if he sees out his race
March 12, 2023 at 01:15 #1638634Taken Maxxum 8/1 ew, feel he’ll probably get backed in and looked an absolute machine during his two wins this season, the second of which was strong form. Can be forgiven his latest run as I doubt Gordon Elliot would have wanted to win that and have his mark raised any higher.

March 12, 2023 at 11:17 #1638673Charles Byrnes was interviewed by Nick Luck on RTV. It was not the clearest phone line but I think he said the horse has knocked a leg. Luck was totally taken by surprise. He had clearly not been tipped off in advance.
I had 12/1 against him. A real blow!

Ditto. Had topped up at 6s as well. 😕
March 14, 2023 at 11:26 #1639028Good Time Jonny is my sole selection in this at a very fair double figures

Ditto gentlemen (including the top up at shorter).
If I was annoyed the BHA Handicapper gratuitously raised his mark a further 2lb MONTHS after his win last time out – in ENGLAND! – I was incandescent when I heard he was a NR.
Once again, The Devil vomits in my kettle.
