I was wondering which courses still have permanent steeplechase fences as opposed to the soft things they wheel about between the races?

Ayr – I believe most fences are permanent and two or three are built in the sections. The latter remain in place until the end of the season once built, though one or two have been missing early season.

Kelso – I think the fences are built in sections but not immediately portable. Sections can be removed however. Construction of fences was changed when the chase course layout was changed last year, though with no apparent drop in quality of build.

Musselburgh – Fences are portable and are moved to new positions from meeting to meeting. Popular with trainers as the course can use the best of the ground. Fences have seemed very soft in the last couple of seasons though, witness particularly Fiendish Flame’s win in early 2012 when he walked through half the obstacles!

Perth – Fences are permanent. Retains a water jump.

Hexham – Fences are permanent and have ‘living wings’. Water jump has been retained.

    Newcastle – Fences are permanent.

Carlisle – I believe the fences are permanent. Certainly the
positions never change and they are solidly constructed.

Cartmel – Fences are permanent. The third course on ‘my circuit’ which still has a water jump.

Sedgefield – Generally permanent though the last fence, the ‘Johnny Ridley Fence’, is presumably made in sections since it has been moved recently. Run-in is now not much more than half a furlong.

Is that really all the courses with permanent fences?! What about Cheltenham, Ascot, Sandown, etc.

No, that’s a summary of the fence build of the courses in my area. I could have a flyer at the rest of the courses but I’ll leave it to those who are regular visitors in other parts of the country.

I think most courses here in the South of Britain have permanent fences including:

    Ascot
    Chepstow
    Exeter
    Fontwell??
    Huntingdon
    Kempton
    Lingfield
    Newbury
    Plumpton
    Sandown

I’m pretty sure one of Ascot’s fences in the straight is now portable, the last I think.

Huntingdon’s second last fence is now portable.

They can be moved between meetings, if necessary, for track maintenance purposes.

It should be stressed though, that their construction is different to the "wheelie fences" used by Southwell and Worcester.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

I was under the assumption there were just four courses that had a full set of portable fences:

    Southwell
    Doncaster
    Haydock
    Musselburgh

    Definitely all permanent at Towcester.

An example is the open ditch (third last) at the bottom of the hill.
