I have managed to back the winner of the Lakeside World Championship in the last 2 years which may make me seem like I know about darts but I don’t. I simply read the write ups in the RP and follow the advice given.
This year is no different and my money is on Scott Waites and also on Robert Wagner.
Good luck to everybody.

For tonight’s final I’m sitting on:
Barneveld to win @ 11/4 (Coral)
Barneveld to win 7-6 @ 7/1 (Ladbrokes)
Barneveld to win 7-5 @ 10/1 (Ladbrokes)
9-dart leg @ 8/1 (Ladbrokes)Now, whilst I recover from the awful news that we’ve drawn Everton in the FA Cup I’m off to back the Ravens (again) for Superbowl glory.

Well, Ladbrokes have done well out of me anyway

I don’t think the term ‘massacre’ would be entirely inaccurate, would it? I suppose Barneveld’s matches against Baxter, Klaasen and Wade, which were effectively three finals, took too much out of him.
All credit to Taylor though whose pressure was relentless.
January 5, 2009 at 05:43 #201663Taylor averaged 109!

It did seem that Barney left a little behind in his previous matches but also got the feeling he was just happy to be playing well again.
How does Taylor ever lose?

In fairness ‘massacre’ is probably a better description of the damage done to my betting accounts (though my NFL play-off bets have helped in that respect). Barneveld didn’t score at all badly, averaging over 101, but doubles just seemed to allude him at vital stages of the match.
But again, the Dutchman looked tired and I wouldn’t mind betting that he knew he was up against it from the first set (three draining matches, leading to a World Championship final against Taylor, would be enough for any man).
The one question I am left with, following what was still an entertaining final, is what do we have to do as paying SKY customers to have the honour of listening to sensible, informed and uplifting commentary? Sid Waddell was, as always, a joy to behold, but his two companions through the evening were truly awful – during the first stint, Taylor went from a devastating darting force to under pressure in the space of two legs…he was 3-1 (in sets) up at the time.
I am at least thankful that Nigel Pearson didn’t make an appearance.
January 5, 2009 at 07:11 #201672In fairness, Taylor had a very minor wobble and it could have gone 3-2, the problem was though, that Taylors ‘wobbles’ last about 12 darts and then normal service is resumed.
I’d certainly settle for the enthusiasm of three Waddells in the commentary box! – so long as they all abandoned their “side stacking..down stacking…up stacking” theory on how Taylors darts land and accept it just looks that way!
January 5, 2009 at 16:40 #201710I got the impression that Barney left his tournament against Klaasen as he seemed so "up" for that match he was emotionally drained for the semi-final and final. I think if Wade had have gone 3-1 up in their semi (missed 2 x D8s to win the set and then hit big 13 when going for D4 on next visit!) then Barney wouldn’t have even been in the final.
January 5, 2009 at 18:24 #201732I am sure it was mentioned during commentary that both finalists had played each other 33 times in other tournament events before last night’s PDC final, with Taylor leading Barnevald by 24 matches to 9.
Make that 25-9 now.
Phil Taylor is the daddy, no matter how many off nights big Barney has.
I think Taylor wanted it so much and that the pressure ( and occasion) simply got to RVB.

Well, it would appear that Anderson has bottled it for the sixth time on the Lakeside stage. I only caught the end of the live coverage on the BBC website, but I’m sure I heard the commentators mention that O’Shea’s match average was less than 90.
Shocking stuff.
I’m left with all my (punting) hopes pinned on Darryl Fitton. Oh dear.
January 9, 2009 at 01:42 #202605Anderson just does not like Lakeside and his doubles let him down
I’m on O’Shea e/w at 33/1 but am not hopeful of collecting even the place part so will be laying him in the semi to cover stakes plus some
January 11, 2009 at 17:19 #203200O’Shea / Hankey final and I’ll be at Frimley tonight…C’mon Stockport!

Fitton should really have pushed O’Shea a lot closer, but it seems beyond him to challenge in major competition. Still, you won’t have done too badly out of it, Perpetual, what ever happens now.
I can’t confess to being a fan of Ted Hankey, but he has been throwing much better this week and the 13/2 about a 7-5 victory appeals.
January 12, 2009 at 03:50 #203357Close but not close enough for me and a bit too close for you Equitrack…very unlucky to miss out on the 7-5 result
January 12, 2009 at 14:35 #203389Fantastic entertainment, that final, even if the eventual closeness of the scoreline owed much to Ted Hankey turning to water presented with match-dart seven or eight times.
Give me that sort of flawed tension over a Phil Taylor 13-1 set steamrollering any day of the week.
…And for those of you who wish to re-enact the final in the comfort of your own living room, here be Ted’s theme tune;

January 12, 2009 at 14:48 #203393Good, compelling entertainment
Thoroughly enjoy my annual exposure to televised Darts.
Dunno if it’s by design, but it being held just into new year seems perfect
January 12, 2009 at 16:15 #203414Ted Hankey v Tony O’Shea in the BDO (mickey mouse world championship ) final.
They and the BBC are having a laugh.
Without the inclusion of Taylor et al, it is utterly meaningless.
