A couple of bets for the darts which restarts tomorrow

I backed Phil Taylor about 6 months ago and whilst he’s the likely winner think 1/2 is too short and there must be value opposing him with someone in the other half of the draw…

I reckon that man is Raymond Barneveld and he’s worth an e/w punt at 7/1 with Corals and VC (not Stan James as they’re only 1/3rd the odds). There were signs in the first round that he was back to his best & with his route to the qtr finals looking straightforward thing he will give you a real run for your money

These are my 2 “value” bets for tomorrow:

Mensur Suljovic (impressive first round) @ 6/4 to beat Dudbridge (stumbled over the line in his)

Co Stompe (playing his best darts ever) @ 7/4 to beat Alan Tabern

    Lets play darts!!

One of my "value" bets went in for a small profit

Barney through to the 3rd round after a comfortable 4-1 win tonight

I saw the Suljovic v Dudbridge match and the score in no way reflects the way the match went. Suljovic should have won the first set and the match was very tight for a long way (one set went against the darts in each leg!)

    Good call on Stompe

You’re right David and he only lost his head after missing darts to win the 3rd set

Taylor plays tonight and he’ll be far too good for Painter. Wade also up but think he maybe vulnerable against Eccles and is definitely no value at 1 to 4

Barney through to a quarter final v Klassens after a fantastic 3-2 win last night over Ronnie Baxter. Twas the match of the tournament so far & just hoping it did not take too much out of him as Klassens will be really tough to get past

Taylor also through and has Stompe in his Qtr final

I can’t beleive Barney made it. Ronnie had 2 darts at double 16 for the match. He must be SICK. He really shud have made sure of that. Brilliant brilliant match though. Saying all that, this competition is all over. Phil Taylor is utterly unbeatable. Why he is not on the list EVERY year for SPOTY is beyond me?

Wade was brutal yesterday – I can’t believe that he is 3rd seed

I guess Helen Chamberlain is taking too much out of Wade away from the oche :D

I’m a huge Barneveld fan, but I can’t see him troubling Taylor if he doesn’t start hitting doubles consistently (his early set efforts against Baxter were poor to say the least). He’s still by far the most likely to test The Power, despite facing an in-form Klaasen next, but how far the thoroughly unlikeable Paul Nicholson can go remains to be seen. He looked to be scoring fairly heavily the other day and he may overwhelm Wade if he doesn’t rediscover his form.

Well, Taylor was utterly devastating against Co Stompe tonight and, in that sort of form, he’s unstoppable. The regularity with which he was hitting trebles was incredible and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was out to secure the 9-darter.

I have to confess to loathing Mervyn King, so am glad that he faces Phil in the semi-finals. His post-match assertion that he can ‘beat anyone, no matter who they are or how they’re playing’ when he’s on his game really did make me laugh. There’s no doubting that he can score heavily at times, but he lacks consistency from set to set, never mind match to match, and how he thinks he can crack the PDC having failed in the BDO is beyond me.

I think I’ll be having my first bet of the tournament on the Nicholson vs Wade match on Friday, taking the Australian/Geordie to emerge a 5-3 or 5-4 winner (15/2 and 11/2 respectively).

I have to confess to loathing Mervyn King,

Ah, the King Whinger. The crowd don’t like me, the opponents don’t like me, even the air-con doesn’t like me… heavens above, this man can bleat. I tend to follow the BDO Lakeside tournament above all others (cos it’s free), and I wasn’t especially upset when he defected to PDC and with that waddled off my telly for the foreseeable.

The BDO bash starts tomorrow, of course. I wondered if last year’s winner Mark Webster might have followed his club-mate (and partner?) Anastasia Dobromyslava over to the PDC in the interim, but apparently not.

    Full draw;

Gary Anderson 1 (Sco) v Robert Wagner (Nor)
Simon Whitlock 12 (Aus) v Mark Barilli (Sco)
Eddy Sims 16 (Aus) v Robert Hughes (Wal)
Tony O’Shea 9 (Eng) v Daniel Larsson (Swe)
Darryl Fitton 5 (Eng) v Mark Salmon (Wal)
Edwin Max 8 (Ned) v Krzysztof Ratajski (Pol)
Mark Webster 2 (Wal) v Wily van der Wiel (Ned)
Scott Waites 4 (Eng) v Ross Smith (Eng)
John Walton 15 (Eng) v Shaun Greatbatch (Eng)
Steve West 13 (Eng) v Alan Norris (Swe)
Ted Hankey 7 (Eng) v Brian Woods (Eng)
Gary Robson 6 (Eng) v Stephen Bunting (Eng)
Martin Atkins 11 (Eng) v Joey Ten Berge (Ned)
Martin Adams 3 (Eng) v Dave Chisnall (Eng)
Ross Montgomery 10 (Sco) v Martin Phillips (Wal)
Garry Thompson 14 (Eng) v Daryl Gurney (NI)

    Women’s draw;
Trina Gulliver 1 (Eng) v Lisa Ashton
Karin Krappen 4 (Ned) v Anne Kirk (Scot)
Francis Hoenselaar 2 (Ned) v Carla Molema (Ned)
Julie Gore 3 (Wal) v Rilana Erades (Ned)

After his performance in the Grand Slam of Darts, surely Gary Anderson has the BDO World Championship at his mercy? I’d have considered slightly speculative bets on Simon Whitlock and Darryl Fitton (allowing for the fact that he’s a bit of a bottle-job), but as they appear to be in the same half of the draw as Anderson there are few alternatives.

All things considered, 5/2 about the Scot isn’t all that bad.

That is the single most impressive performance you’re ever likely to see. Absolutely incredible. Even without the nine-darter, there was Barneveld’s 161 checkout to win the match, phenomenal all-round scoring and Klaasen’s sensational 99 checkout (T17, 16, D16) with all three darts thrown in a little over 3.0 seconds.

    Mind-blowing.

In contrast though, the Wade vs Nicholson match was perhaps the worst I have witnessed in the last three or four years. According to Sky Sports Barneveld’s three dart average was 25 clear of Wade tonight, so it’s hard to see anything other than a Barney vs Taylor final.

Your investment is beginning to look fairly sound, Perpetual. Nicely done.

On a completely different note, is Dave Clark (I believe that’s his surname) not the worst presenter Sky Sports have dared to thrust upon the over-charged public, Nigel Pearson aside? He must have asked Barneveld how proud he was on at least six occasions in his post-match interview, and failed miserably to pursue any other line of questioning. Still, who really gives a monkey’s brass wotsits after a match like that :D

What a fantastic performance and in that form Taylor is no certainty

Can’t see Wade troubling Barney tomorrow and hopefully should see the place bet weighed in and if it’s a Taylor/Barney final I’ll be at Ally Pally to watch

BTW – My BDO picks are Whitlock at 10/1 and O’Shea at 33/1 based on the fact that Anderson (best player by far) has an awful first round record. If he beats Wagner will be wading in at anything around the 2/1 mark

Read my thoughts to an extent, Perptetual – I was not far off going to see what price I could get on a Robert Wagner win precisely on account of Gary Anderson’s underwhelming Lakeside record.

Some players get lit up by the event, enjoy it hugely, and occasionally over-achieve as a consequence. Wagner, with his hand-flips and all, is the sort of player the Lakeside massive warm to readily, and they may just inspire him enough here against a player who has conversely looked stilted and terrified up on that stage on occasion.

Anderson was hardly convincing, was he? With the opening round out of the way I was beginning to think that my 5/2 was a wise investment, but it would appear that he’s still generally available at the same price.

Time to fill one’s boots, me thinks.

    Now back to the PDC.

Taking into account the fact that James Wade upped his gamed markedly tonight, I thought Barneveld was absolutely superb. Sky Sports presenters seem to think that the 3-dart average is the be all and end all of every match, but it doesn’t necessarily do any player justice. Given his exertions yesterday Barney could quite easily have folded after going 3-2 down, but he showed the sort of resolution that saw him beat Taylor 7-6 two years ago.

Taylor on the otherhand was as impressive as ever, though what kind of test Mervyn King really offers at this sort of level is debatable. There were a few abnormal darts from The Power, namely two 41s and a 23 in the opening leg of the match, but at times he was simply majestic.

A quick look at tomorrow night’s odds has Barneveld as the 11/4 outsider. Frankly, that’s ridiculous and he has to be worth a relatively sizeable bet on the back of what has been an exceptional week. I will also be interested to see how the set market is priced up, with 7-6 either way and a Barney 7-5 worth second looks.

I’m not convinced on Anderson and will be leaving the 5/2 unbacked. Am topping up on Whitlock at 7/1 and think the winner will come from that pair

Today’s only bet is Woods @ 6/4 to beat Hankey, who’s the only player I’ve ever seen booed at the Lakeside!

Hoping that Barney / Taylor final tonight is another classic and no further outright bets needed for me as both are big winners in my book. Barney wins me more and IMO is more likeable so that’s who I’m supporting and agree the prices are wrong and would price it up 4/9 – 7/4

One bet I will be having though is Barney more 180’s at 6/5 with Ladbrokes. The price is wrong ad he should be fav
