August 12, 2010 at 20:44 #312496I thought his ride on River Falcon was far less acceptable.
Hardly,Paul is the only jockey to have actually got River Falcon to win in the last 3 yrs,god knows how he did that as his last run was typical River Falcon- stone cold last and running on all too late once the race is over,he runs like that all the time! I agree with Onthesteal,Paul Nortons ride on Regents Secret was very poor!
August 13, 2010 at 08:54 #312543He got it to win at Ayr because the leaders went off too fast and he picked them off as they stopped. He failed to notice on Wednesday night the difference in the pace the leaders went off at.
August 13, 2010 at 15:19 #312618His ride on Botham also the other evening seemed to be overdone although I accept he is a horse not dissimilar to Regent’s Secret and River Falcon in that he has to be dropped in and played late.
A look back at his rides of late though does reveal a tendency to drop everything in before being played late. Can’t see Jim putting him up on Tillietudlem any time soon so!
August 25, 2010 at 22:46 #314665Thought I’d be the one to point out that Paul Norton picked up a 12-day ban for his riding of Eternal Instinct at Ayr. What I don’t understand is if Jim Goldie was unhappy about Norton’s riding, why has he continued to put him up on so many horses, all of which receive identical rides? It seems odd to me and I hope a full explanation of the tactics is asked for.
As I’ve said, it makes sense that Goldie must be either happy with Norton’s application of his own tactics, or specifically instructing the jockey to ride accordingly. Dropping horses right out in bad races and then asking for an effort as late as possible isn’t necessarily a bad tactic, but it must either be defended or denied by Goldie. Defending it risks him being charged under the non-triers rule, while denying it makes it look like he’s been overusing an ignorant and limited jockey, but I fear that no real questions will be asked.
August 26, 2010 at 00:40 #314671He should never have got a ban for his riding of Eternal Instinct at Ayr, IMO, because he should have still had his feet up for his riding of Regent’s Secret, which was far worse.
Different horse, same ‘jockey’, another late rattle after getting inexplicably detached from the rest of the field.
I’m more surprised that old ‘
he has to be ridden that way
‘ chestnut failed to convince.
It was never suggested in this thread that Mr Norton was a non-trier or up to no good in any way. It does appear that he’s being told to hold horses up, but he’s simply exaggerating the tactic time and time again – nothing more to it – but it falls way short of what’s acceptable on the race track.
Jim Goldie is obviously a very loyal man or completely mad – I go with the former.

Being a employee in racing i know alot about instructions and soo on i dont think any off the rides paul norton has given any of the goldie horses are of any sort question , the vast majority of goldies horses are hold up and many do struggle to lay up at the start of races . Mr Norton is still a 7lb claimer and has only rode 5 winners all of which are hold up horses , nor if he was to off won on regent secret or so botham , river falcon am sure you’s would have classed it as some of the best rides this season !! Clearly river falcon is now geting older and the set up to 7 furlongs at ayr proved to benifet finishing a close 3rd and also was back marker that day a little more understanding of what Mr Nortons instructions and perhaps how good the actual horse is in the race should maybe be taken into account !! I’m sure he is one to watch in the future !!

A winner over hurdles today, racing prominently throughout.
Nice to see the old boy getting his head in front again.

Well knock me down with a feather! Different tacitcs today and they worked a treat. I thought Regent’s Secret might think twice once driven approaching the last but he was plenty co-operative and did the job well.
A bit late to spot it now, but I notice that his form figures at Perth now read 31121531, so something about Scone Palace Park clearly takes his fancy.
