You might have seen this already, if not watch to the end mad!!!!
(wikipeda fo full explanation)July 7, 2008 at 10:11 #172064Unbelievable – riding bareback like that I bet they didn’t do much "celebrating" that night.
You can’t say there were many non-triers in the race either and it makes Chester look like a galloping track.
Was tha Lydia doing the commentary – it could explain where she has disappeared to?
July 7, 2008 at 10:14 #172065Lydia was doing the link work from the studio on Saturday, Paul.

July 7, 2008 at 10:45 #172073…………makes Chester look like a galloping track.
"Undulating" would be a more apposite description Paul – the pictures don’t really do it justice.
July 7, 2008 at 12:49 #172087The winning horse will be running under the royal blue of Godolphin next time we see it. Can’t be much worse than most of their runners…
Jamie Spencer take note – that’s how you ride a horse!
Who was the starter? Great job! I’ll pay for his travel expenses to Aintree next year!
July 7, 2008 at 14:34 #172104i’m surprised that the horse that wins stays so calm with that ammount of people around him??
July 7, 2008 at 16:16 #172115I was on an easyjet flight on thursday and they were running an article on the race in their little magazine you get in the seat in front.
July 7, 2008 at 17:12 #172124I was at the Palio in 1958 and it was a wonderful days fun .It has probably changed since then. Most things have.
July 7, 2008 at 18:43 #172139Siena is a very conservative city, their traditions ultra-important to them. I don’t think the Palio’s changed much, andy.
i’m surprised that the horse that wins stays so calm with that ammount of people around him??
Too traumatised to react? Certainly no room to move. Siennese stall handling – did the horse get punched on the nose, did anyone see?

Seriously, though, it is hugely dangerous to man and beast.
July 7, 2008 at 19:24 #172149WTF was all that, mad as a box of biscuits the Italians.
Still it is easily a front runners course and the going was probably standard.
Must have been started by Keith Brown or the bloke who got booed at in starting last years GN
Finally why cant we get our Richard or Lee to do an English commentary on the race.
July 7, 2008 at 19:44 #172151We were in the Campo the day before the late summer Palio in 2001 (there’s usually two races a year in June and August I think).
I thought it would be a hoot to attend the following day, but we were warned well off the idea by our landlady, who said that it was no place for us to be taking a baby. As you can tell from the footage above, she was right, so we watched it on the goggler with her family that evening. The hearty and frequent shouts of “Stronzo!” at the TV, indicated to us that their contrada had been well and truly humped in the race.
The footage doesn’t really do the build-up any justice………………it takes about 20 attempts (and half-an-hour) before the starter finally gets them away, and how he comes to his decision about letting them away is a mystery – a straight line most definitely not being a pre-requisite.
Basically, it’s crazy Italian, family-and-blood mentalism, manifested in a horse race. Hard to beat as a combination.
