They have just managed to find his peak, maybr in another couple of years time, but not next season.
He’s already eight: I very much doubt that we’ll ever see Brave Inca over fences now.
I hope we dont, but i think we may do in a couple of years. I really think he is a horse that can go on for some time. Many people say he has hard races, but the only reason he has to be ‘urged’ is because he keeps plenty up his sleeve.
March 21, 2006 at 12:25 #2558Hi there all im back from my "holiday" across the water . Got cleaned but by god did i have a ball. Though i backed none of them bar War of attrition anti post at 33/1 i think we saw Four new and worthy champions ,
Would you all agree?
March 21, 2006 at 12:49 #70407No! They can be described as worthy if they come back next year and repeat the dose.
The only one capable of that I suspect is War of Attrition. Brave Inca was lucky – Macs Joy, and Al Eile make his form look no better than last year to me and both Feathard Lady and Harchie could be back next year. There will also be some interesting competition from this years novices.
My Way won possibly the dullest Stayers I have ever witnessed and was lucky in much the same way as BI – the competition was sub-standard.
In fact all the Championship races were a light of former years with little strength in depth.
The Gospel according to Saint Slooch – here endeth the lesson.

Glad to see that you had a good time; hope that the liver is still going.
;)
As for the new champions, I assume that you’re talking about the feature race on each day and there can be no argument that all of them deserved their wins on the day as they all travelled and jumped better than the opposition. Looking forward to next year, however, I feel that Brave Inca may be the only one to successfully defend his title. Newmill will do well to hold off the likes of Voy Por Ustedes, and Kauto Star is well worth another chance; My Way de Solzen may well find the ground too quick next season – he was lucky to get away with it last week – and will have Inglis Drever back and Black Jack Ketchum in the field (were he mine, My Way would be going chasing, anyway); War Of Attrition will hopefully have Kicking King, Trabolgan and Monet’s Garden (and others) to face next year.
I wouldn’t say that they’re all going to lose but the new champions will certainly have their work cut out to defend their crowns in 2007.
March 21, 2006 at 13:35 #70326In an interview today Colm Murphy has stated that Punchestown is his next definite target, although he has come out of the race so well that they havent ruled out going to Aintree either.
More importantly for me though, is that they are seriously considdering going chasing with him next season. Birng it on.
March 21, 2006 at 14:26 #70410I think it is unfair to describe Brave Inca as lucky just because there wasn’t a better horse in the race. Using that criteria almost every Champion Hurdler can be described as ‘lucky’.
I agree that it probably wasn’t an outstanding field but Hardy Eustace is a two time winner of the race and Mac’s Joy is a fair performer. Brave Inca’s form all year suggested he had improved on last season and his RPR last Tuesday was up 6lbs on his effort last year.
He will be 9 next year and it would be unreasonable to expect him to improve further, indeed the opposite is much more likely to occur. On that basis a repeat win is less likely than would the case if he were 6 or 7. However it does not detract from what was a fine performance and he is a very deserving champion IMO.
I would also argue that War of Attrition should not be under-rated. based on his performance last week if he were to line up next year and run to a similar level it’ll take a real champion to beat him. Yes, Trabolgan is interesting and a back-to-form Kicking King would be a real test. On the other hand Monet’s Garden, while promising, has lots to prove before he can be considered a legitimate contender. As things stand at the minute if i was having my house on one of that quartet I’d definitely have it on WOA.
I would also suggest that this year’s stayers race set a good standard. The first two are improving horses and I think time may prove it was a fair old race.
The Champion Chase I agree was an unsatisfactory affair and agree that next years event will almost certainly take a fair bit more winning than this year. Newmill has bits and pieces of high class form but his history reads a bit like the running of last weeks race- muddling.
March 21, 2006 at 15:16 #70411Take the point that none of the four winners won in a manner which was eyecatchingly dominant, but in fairness to WOA he could well improve alot and My Way was battling against least favoured conditions, which was very admirable in itself. Hes surely going chasing though

March 21, 2006 at 15:53 #70327I tend to agree that this is the best bunch since Persian war et al. but I might be very very wrong. Its hard to compare across generations. I had a few doubths coming into the race because Im cynical by nature but the three horses that should have destroyed the rest of the field did precisly that. I think anyone that describes BI as lucky is a bit barmy really. Every horse needs luck but he obviously needs less then others….he probably is also perhaps better than the margin of his victory suggests.
Forgotten the Seventies, have you?
March 21, 2006 at 16:15 #70412Why does a horse have to win the race two years on the bounce to be a ‘worthy’ winner. Was Kicking King any less worthy last year because he didn’t run this year? Was Moscow any less worthy for last years success because he didn’t win this year?
March 21, 2006 at 19:15 #70329he did win it in 1970….But I know what you mean. Your thinking sea pigeon, night nurse monksfield.

March 21, 2006 at 21:27 #70330I for one hope and predict that BI will stay over hurdles, somewhat ironically, as I spent most of the Tuesday night 2 years ago trying to persuade one of his owners to put him over fences after his novice season. Most horses(Moscow Flyer excepted) who go chasing late never reach the same heights as over hurdles ( a certain grey springs to mind) and this fella will mop up conditions hurdles at home for a good many years to come and retire in one piece.
March 22, 2006 at 05:21 #70331In response to an earlier question 12/1 fro the Arkle with PP
March 22, 2006 at 06:39 #70414
very unfair to describe brave inca as lucky the race was set up for a late finisher like macs joy yet he prevailed
he has a rpr rating the same as rooster and yet he didnt have the race set up for him
as for the other championship races
newmill beat a weak field and i doubr he will be able to beat vdu next year
the arkle was a top class renewal and i believe the winner will be next years champion chaser
my way de solzen won very well but there is a suspicion that he won becuase of a poor ride given to golden cross
war of attrition won very well and like a good horse he may not be as good as kicking king but on the other hand not many horses come back from injury and pick up from where they left off
March 22, 2006 at 09:37 #70415I’d say 2 or 3 out of 4.
Brave Inca beat what I’d call the 2 next best 2m hurdlers. I don’t think that either Harchi or the mare would have won.
I still think KK is the best Gold Cup class horse, but WoA beat everything else, so I wouldn’t take anything away from him.
The Staying hurdle division is weak at the moment. I’m not totally taken by Inglis Drever and can’t say that he would have won. MWDS ran a decent race (though perhaps didn’t deserve to win), but needs to show more for me to regard him as a champion.
The Ch Chase was what I feared it would be. A low class renewal won by a horse that I expect to lose when he’s up against WC & Azerty next year.
Steve
March 22, 2006 at 13:02 #70416I think you have it about right there, Steve.
I too would expect Well Chief and Azerty to finish ahead of Newmill, other things being equal. Nevertheless Newmill was clearly superior last week to all who finished, so I wouldn’t be as negative about him as you.
March 22, 2006 at 14:03 #70417I don’t think Azertyuiop will ever win over 2m again.
