The only smile on my face this year was put there by the c4 team after this years Champion Hurdle when I heard 1 of them remark that in years to come the current era would be regarded as another to rival that of the late 70’s and early 80’s. I am old enough to remember that period as a young lad and teen and those horses made my interest what it is today in jump racing. The only comment to the remark made by the c4 team I would have raised would have been if a Golden Cygnet , Birds Nest or Relkeel had been in the field ( the 3 best never to have have won the race) would have been in the field we may have seen a star worthy of a mention in the same conversation with those stars, this year as in many previous sadly I haven’t. Love to hear your views
March 19, 2006 at 23:11 #70307I doubt there’s much evidence to suggest Relkeel was a significantly better horse than Brave Inca. At least both are/were thoroughly genuine, unlike that old rogue Bird’s Nest. ;)
March 20, 2006 at 12:11 #703083 bula hurdles, 4 wolverhampton champion hurdle trials, 3 Fighting Fifth’s, plus loads of other wins and near misses at the top flight over 8 seasons – some rogue Rory! :)
The only times the wheels came off was at Prestbury in March. Turnell reckons that Birds Nest’s legs were never the best and by March they had had enough for the season, and that if the Champion Hurdle had been run in November they would undoubtedly been on the role of honour at some stage. Methinks Brave Inca wouldn’t have seen which way Birds Nest went.
March 20, 2006 at 12:19 #70310Well Brave Inca has got to be the luckiest Champion Hurdle winner ever. No Feathard Lady, no Harchibald and an undercooked Hardy Eustace? BI wouldn’t have made the frame if all his opponents had been there fit and ready.
LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY!!!!!

March 20, 2006 at 12:29 #70311I don’t think Brave Inca would have held off anything fast finishing
Yet another example of the way in which hype and the "cult of the new" is ruining society in general and racing in particular.
You can add Dramatist and Beacon Light to the list of old-timers who would have had the current crop of two-mile hurdlers for breakfast.
By the way, much as I liked Relkeel, David Nicholson always maintained that Carobee was by far the best horse he trained. Pity that he was sidelined by injury after his novice season, as he would probably have won as many Champion Hurdles as they wanted to before going chasing.
But tend to agree….
He ran well on Tuesday of course, but is often a bit scratchy and ordinary in his jumping that I cant help wondering whether he really stands up against some of the better past winners. Has guts of course
Without dimishing the quality of the Irish horses, cant help wondering whether AW racing has now really dimished the overall quality of those sent jumping
But not saying anything is wrong with that either
March 20, 2006 at 12:56 #70315Surely Hors La Loi’s Champion is stones worse than the latest renewal. Where would Marble Arch have finished last Tuesday?
March 20, 2006 at 13:34 #70316Nostalgia is clouding the vision.

Dont agree with that at all. Ok, Feathered Lady wasnt in the race, but how good is she, really?
Harchibald will never win a champion hurdle as nothing can win that race on the bridle and if he is to win it, thats what he will have to do.
Hardy Eustace undercooked or just past it now…….. i would go for the later. Dessie said he had him the best he could get him, which was near enough spot on and just wasnt good enough on the day.
Who said Brave Inca wouldnt have been able to fend off something that finished fast………. wasnt macs joy finishing fairly quickly??
It was a competitive race and his willingness won it, its going to take something VERY special to beat him next year. I would like to hear your suggestions as to what is good enough.
March 20, 2006 at 13:50 #70318I find it a little sad that anyone would slag off a horse as good as Brave Inca just because he’s so genuine. If he had to do it on the bridle he’d be hailed as a wonder horse. He’s a wonderful example of what a racehorse should be about and we should enjoy him for that. Long live the king!
March 20, 2006 at 13:51 #70319Sky’s the Limit won the Coral Cup doing absolute handsprings – and the first 5yo ever to do it. This horse has form lines with Feathard Lady which make FL look better than what we have seen.
Hardy can’t win next year tho I don’t agree that he was past it this. The prep did him imo.
I’m a perennial Harchie knocker but I think he’s better than BI. I also think the County hurdle winner and one or two of this years novices could put Inca in his place.
All in all next years CH could be the mutz nutz of a race and I certainly wouldn’t be touching BI befor Xmas in the AP markets
March 20, 2006 at 13:59 #70320No Feathard Lady, no Harchibald
If only those two had been in the race. Brave Inca would have paid out far better odds when he beat them.

March 20, 2006 at 14:00 #70321I really hope they go novice chasing with BI next season. With FL in the yard, Murphy might try and persuade BI’s connections to go down that route, and Im sure they will do as he suggests. He would be very exciting if taking well to fences, and hes gone to the top of the hurdle tree.
What price BI for the Arkle?

Why go chasing with him? when something isnt broke, dont fix it!
They have just managed to find his peak, maybr in another couple of years time, but not next season.
He’s already eight: I very much doubt that we’ll ever see Brave Inca over fences now.
