Have loved horseracing since my grandfather introduced me in the 80s. The Irish influence is huge. Punchestown 2018 – Mullins/Elliot. I have never known 2 trainers take over a meeting – winners and runners. Competition is good and I feel this is killing the irish community. How can trainers continue against these odds???
April 27, 2018 at 10:30 #1352156Some smaller Trainers particularly in Ireland I believe don’t campaign their horses very well. If anything some try to be too ambitious, for example what possessed Martin hassett to run the conditional in the race next destination won?. There are plenty of opportunities for smaller trainers to win decent races with decent horses.
Obviously you have the big 6 in Ireland. Mullins, Elliott, O Brien, DeBromhead, Meade, Harrington. Then the remainder of the top ten is Charles Byrnes, Denis Hogan, John Ryan and Tom Mullins.
Now I’d guess that the least well known of those is John Ryan. He has horses such as Kylecrue, Kilcarry Bridge, Draycott Place, Presenting Mahler, Bitview Colin, but most of his horses are lower grade animals that he manages to win prize money with. That is an example to me of a success story that Irish racing should give more exposure to. He is way ahead of the likes of Tony Martin, Mouse Morris, Enda Bolger and Alan Fleming.
Tony Martin who has loads of support from JP McManus, John Breslin and Newtown Anne’s to name just a few
Mouse Morris has O Leary horses, McManus Horses and Potts horses to name just a few.
Bolger has a whole raft of McManus horses.
Fleming has all of Barry Connells horses. When you compare all of the money being spent on horses in those stables, with the results that the likes of John Ryan and Denis Hogan are getting then its fair to say there are success stories within Irish nh racing that just aren’t being highlighted enough by the racing media.
For example John Ryan is 9th in the Irish trainers championship but I wouldn’t even know what he looks like. I’ve never seen him interviewed. Yesterday was the first time I had seen Pat Fahy. A bit more attention for these type of trainers might help raise their profile a bit.
April 27, 2018 at 10:44 #1352158You should also mention Peter Fahey who is a very shrewd trainer, knows how to place his horses, especially when the money is down.
I tend to disagree about Joseph O’Brien as a Big 6 NH trainer. Given the number of horses he gets from JP he has only produced Edwulf (talented, but not really consistent and easy to place) and Ivanovich Gorbatov (last win three years ago or so). Cutting the balls off ex Flat horses rated 100 and above is not quite an achievement.
April 27, 2018 at 11:38 #1352160Ruby you can’t disagree with a fact. He is in the top 6, in fact he is in the top 3. I wasn’t arguing about the merits of his operation, I just listed the top ten in the Irish trainers championship. Yes I agree with Peter Fahey, another trainer who I don’t think I have ever seen interviewed and off the top of my head I wouldn’t be able to name any of his horses
April 27, 2018 at 11:48 #1352161In the 5.35 tomorrow, Mullins has 44 horses entered.
I wonder what the trainer’s championship would look like net of entry fees?
April 27, 2018 at 23:32 #1352270LOL Joe!!
Very good but please don’t set me off again about multiple entries!!
April 28, 2018 at 18:36 #1352451It’s incredible and makes it very hard for punters as Mullins horses consistently beat each other. How Sadlier could win today and form is beyond me. However it did or is it Mullins just keeping his owners happy.
April 28, 2018 at 18:54 #1352455Last 14 days: 20 winners from 142 runners which equals about 14%.
No matter how you look at it, he’s had 122 beaten horses during this period.
April 28, 2018 at 23:07 #1352474Droffats- Mullins said after Fairyhouse, Saldier was the one to take from the race, finishing 3rd.
He jumped poorly yet didnt finish far away, and for a juvenile is a very good prospect.
He said this himself then, so i doubt anything untoward is happening regarding keeping owners happy.

Timeform said of Saldier after his Fairyhouse run…
“showed the benefit of his run in the Triumph as he recorded comfortably his best effort to date, still not the finished article, either; chased leader, travelled fluently, not fluent fourth, still going well in third when not fluent again 2 out, left behind by first pair briefly, ran on latter stages and finished with running left; likely to progress further.”
They had the horse on a very progressive ratings profile of 117p/119p/131p, so he was clearly no back number. The market appeared to agree with that generally upbeat assessment too.
