Since there are regularly a number of Irish runners raiding Scottish and Irish meetings I’ve noticed an anomaly between official handicap ratings of Irish horses and their UK ratings. Their UK marks are approximately a stone higher than their Irish mark. Noticed this with Spa Wells at Perth on Tuesday evening, apparently badly weighted but on investigation seemed to have a decent chance and duly obliged.

Does anyone know if the UK mark for Irish runners is just Irish mark plus a figure(maybe 14lbs), or does the UK handicapper responsible for each group of horses assess all horses himself?

All Irish races are assessed by the GB jumps handicapping team and each horse entered is effectively given a ‘GB’ mark, which has no direct relationship to its Irish mark.

The Irish handicappers and GB handicappers work on different scales and in a different way.
