Well looks like Rumoush is definitely heading for the Oaks. Tregoning has said today he’s optimistic she’ll get the trip.
I’m actually still trying to work out why I didn’t have her on my trends shortlist.
May 9, 2010 at 15:50 #294951TRAINER Jim Bolger has decided not to run StanJames.com 1,000 Guineas third Gile Na Greine at York this week and will instead target the Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas on May 23.
However, that does not mean that the daughter of Galileo is doubtful for the Investec Oaks for which she is second favourite with some bookmakers.
Bolger said on Sunday: "Gile Na Greine will run next in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She is also in the Investec Oaks and we will take one race at a time.
"I never actually committed her to running in the Musidora Stakes and Gold Bubbles will be my runner in that race on Wednesday."
Another of the trainer’s Oaks entries, Sagacious, looks unlikely to make Epsom.
Bolger added: "Sagacious has gone home for a break as all mightn’t be quite well with her. She didn’t pick up the way we expected her to when she ran in theVictor McCalmont Stakes at Gowran Park and a month away should do her good."
May 9, 2010 at 16:40 #294967Bolger really is a prick. Anyway she has absolutely no chance of winning the Oaks now. Only O’Brien knows how to run horses in the Irish 1000 while leaving them with something for the Oaks.
May 12, 2010 at 11:46 #295390If i can find my 20/1 for Cabaret to win Oaks ticket that is the horse for me.
Be intresting if Termagant runs in Oaks as well might back that as well.

I backed Cabaret ew for the Oaks at 20/1 on the day her saddle slipped in the Prix Marcel-Boussac (also backed Dick Turpin at 20s ew for the Guineas before his effort in the Grand Criterium the same day).
I was very taken by her progression leading up to the contest and she had displayed a lovely attitude in her first three starts over an inadequate trip. She’s bred to stay well and there’s nothing that really stands out in the Oaks market at the moment, in my opinion.
Hope she goes well.
May 12, 2010 at 13:52 #295403The Master does it again.
Perhaps she didn’t beat a great deal, but a very nice performance and she looks certain to appreciate the Oaks trip.
I’d certainly favour her over Timepiece if the pair were to turn up together at Epsom.
Progressive, athletic, solid attitude, stays well and a good turn of foot.
May 12, 2010 at 13:59 #295404Can’t agree, Bos. No pace & turned into a 4f sprint. Gold Bubbles ffs.

I remember Light Shift beating a couple of modest sorts in the Cheshire Oaks before her moment of glory at Epsom.
Both Light Shift and Aviate produced similar performances to win their respective trials – charging late-on after looking held.
The pace was fair, Zarkava, and it takes a good fily to win from where she was.
In a race where there’s no outstanding candidate, Aviate has given every indication she should stay the trip and showed plenty of courage in the process.
She looks very straight-forward and the type to handle Epsom.
An unbeaten, progressive, Henry Cecil-trained filly going into a classic…hard to dismiss her, really.
Of course, she could go to France instead, but I think she looks an ideal Epsom Oaks filly, personally.

Except that Bolger has done it successfully with New Approach (yes yes, 2000 and Derby, but same thing). Regardless of the fact that it was a "mistake" and he didn’t mean to leave NA in at the declaration stage, he now knows he can do it.
Prick though he might be, it’s more fun that way. It wouldn’t be as interesting nor as challenging if all the trainers were opening up their hearts to the journalists a la Tregoning.
May 12, 2010 at 19:50 #295446Machines have gone mad with Akderna winning at Naas, today being backed in from 40s to matched as low as 12s (me being a personal layer at the price).
Henry knows what he’s doing! The smart money was on at 32s, even with Zarkava saying she won’t run at Epsom!
Take a bow Henry my boy as Matt Chapman would say!

If pr*ck is the definition of a shrewd trainer with an excellent understanding of thoroughbred horses, then Jim Bolger is a right pr*ck. He does not have the power behind him of a Coolmore, Godolphin or the Aga Khan, however he certainly mixes it with the best of them, I have great admiration for him and what he has achieved.

I think he is a very good trainer, as well, but I think the "prick" comment is in reference to his attitude towards punters. He is notorious for being tight-lipped and/or changing his mind about his plans, which provokes many betters (including, apparently, Zarkava) to refer to him negatively, because his changing/opaque plans frequently upsets betting plans. I personally don’t see why he should have to cater to that demographic, but I can see why that demographic gets annoyed about it.

I suppose you know Jim peronally yourself?
May 13, 2010 at 00:07 #295487‘Bolger said: "Gile Na Greine is going to go for the Irish Guineas, I never committed her to York and I think she deserves a proper shot at a Classic.’
Ridiculously defensive stance.
Then add that to all the other bollocks he’s come up with.
May 13, 2010 at 00:18 #295490What’s ridiculous about it?
He’d rather let her take her chance at the Curragh than at York.
Irish trainer targets Irish race. Seems fairly logical to me.
May 13, 2010 at 09:19 #295506Good post OleBahram, I accept your points. Zarkava not sure why you’re so upset about the horse going to the Irish Guineas, as you said yourself its by Galileo and won’t have the stamina for the Oaks.
