Any thoughts on this race
August 12, 2010 at 21:31 #312500I know there’s no such thing as a two horse race (unless it’s ACTUALLY got two horses in it), but this is all about SSB and Equiano. FWIW, I reckon Equiano can turn the tables on the Thunder from Down Under – five furlongs will suit him better.

So don't run, just like the others always do
August 13, 2010 at 12:19 #312580Stone of Folca = Kingsgate Native.
August 13, 2010 at 20:18 #312650With you PC- confirmed a runner today. If they let the other 2yo Meow take her chance she’d also be of interest.
August 15, 2010 at 20:42 #312968Be interested to know what people think of the chances of Mister Hughie for running into a place in this race … still can’t get over how much ground this horse made up from just over a furlong out against Borderlescott at Goodwood last time … watch the replay if you can … Alan Munro was sat motionless well off the pace until just over the furlong marker before displaying an astonishing burst of speed to carry him into a close up fourth btn less than a length.
I realise he’s done nothing to suggest he can match strides with SSB or Equiano but it was an interesting run at Goodwood nevertheless, especially since they’ve clearly given him time to recover from an absolutely horrendous fall at Beverley earlier in the summer.
66/1 seems huge given how close he was to Borderlescott … I’m guessing he wouldn’t want any rain this week though.
August 16, 2010 at 12:33 #313049Rose Blossom each-way at 16/1 looks good to me, improving filly who is 2 wins from 3 starts at the track including over CD though may struggle to get the lead with SSB and Equiano in the race, could set it up for a closer and in that regard….
Mister Hughie looks overpriced to me at 66/1 – rsounds like madness but he was badly outpaced over the flying 5f of Goodwood last time out before travelling well into the final furlong and running on strongly, he was beaten just a length that day.
Martin
August 16, 2010 at 15:06 #313067Stone of Folca also. Can be argued he’s not finishing off his races after traveling like a grp1 horse, but maybe it’s just greenness and he can go with any speed.
August 17, 2010 at 10:00 #313198I would gladly take 7/4 the front 2 coupled.
August 18, 2010 at 11:21 #313362Happy to throw a few quid on the old boy Borderlescott at 10/1. Must be a stone better horse in August, his career runs in August from 8 runs have produced 5 wins, 2 sh hd 2nds and a 1/2 length 3rd!
3 course wins from 4 attempts the only blot being the horses debut!
Injuries, fitness, age aside…Borderlescott is a seriously good sprinter at York at the back end of August and will do for me!

Nice stats.
I backed Equiano at 16’s each-way last time out but at these odds i’ll be on the favourite.
August 18, 2010 at 16:41 #313424The whole race has changed today.
Starspanngledbanner has the plum draw in Stall number 13. Couple that with his fast pace out of the gate he almost nigh on impossible to stop especially as he will grab the Rail(very important to come up the closest side). Also since Kingsgate Native is drawn on the far side on 1 and Equiano drawn in Stall 3 its going to be very very hard for those animals to get in.
The draw has basically made him Star a very good 2/1 shot in my book
August 18, 2010 at 17:08 #313431Would’ve put Equiano in as the favourite here on a sound surface. But poor form of the Barry Hills yard puts me off.
Equiano should have more speed than Starspangledbanner. On July Cup running Aidan’s horse was not going as well as Barry’s in the first half of the race.
Am a fan of both horses, but might have to look for something to beat them here.

I don’t rate Alan Munro at all, but I’ve had a slight each-way interest in Mister Hughie at 40/1. The strong pace should suit, conditions are of little concern and he travels so well in his races that he could conceivably run in to a place.
August 19, 2010 at 23:49 #313701I’m very strong on
Fleeting Spirit
, and the proximity of Equiano – if she can eventually get past him – should help her cause no end.
The AOB runner should be outpaced by a few here.
Question regarding draw bias: Why does ATR have low numbers favourable? Personally, I don’t don’t think it matters as long as there’s pace around your selection.

It took Starspanglebanner forever and a day to cut down Equiano over 6 furlongs so over this fast 5f you could expect the latter to hold on.
However Johnny Murtagh was riding SSB to win over 6f he kicked off very fast and was fairly quiet on him in the middle part of the race, then had to stoke him up again. Hardly think that will be the case here and if this Aussie horse can cover a furlong in 9 seconds this would be a good day to show it.
Really can’t see any reason to think the result will be any different here than it was last time these two met.
Boderless Scott and Kingsgate Native look well held the latter looking as he’s on the verge of becoming a back number…….but that man Fallon might change his mind about that.
If there’s one that might cause a major upset it would be Rose Blossom. Richard Fahey once said she was te best filly he’d ever trained and she’s begining to show some decent form at long last.
Starspangledbanner for me
August 20, 2010 at 02:02 #313716The range of replies here says it all for this race!
SSB has plum draw but Equiano runs blinders and wins without the need of a rail. The ground is just as good off the rail and Fallon said today "if anything its a little faster". Equiano for me, he had SSB beat at the 5f and was only beaten by the stiff 6f at Newmarket. The rain, if any (I was expecting more than arrived on Wednesday!), will only keep the ground safe and good – its GF in places as of yesterday.
Borderlescotts stats as provided by Zamorston are compelling to say the least! Stone of Folca – 3yos – 1 win and 1 second from 3 starts in 10 years. Compelling also. Fleeting Spirit is more likely to give a shpw than at Newmarket. Noseda and Dettori said the ground was too fast for her and she wouldn’t let is all out. Her legs aren’t what they used to be apparently.
I got 4/1 on Equiano today so good luck and I hope you all finish DH for second!
