First Binocular is running then he is not then he is again, then Punchestown is out then he is in again. Think what the uproar would be if Jim Bolger was the trainer in question? The press would be tearing him apart and his yard would be over run with investigators.
March 6, 2010 at 14:20 #280835When did Nicky Henderson say Punchestowns was a definite NR?!
March 6, 2010 at 14:43 #280836He didn’t. He said it would depend on what happened.
I’m starting to wonder why trainers bother talking to the press, all they get is grief.
Here’s a clue, people – until a horse is scratched from a race, it can still turn up for the race.
March 6, 2010 at 15:11 #280844Exactly, you’d really wonder.
March 6, 2010 at 15:23 #280846I wonder yes I wonder
If what I hear is thunder
Or a whisper from the one who really knows
For now the sound is gone
And I’m left with nothing on
Will the bookey ever give me back my clothes?March 6, 2010 at 15:28 #280847Henderson did say when PT went lame, he had this injury before this season and it was fine within 24 hours.

With Henderson’s recent doping of horses you have to question his integrity especially after an alarming drift 2 days before news broke out of his lameness.
March 6, 2010 at 15:45 #280850Yes Question’s about Mr. Henderson….
Must say i like the man personally but their have been a few incident’s now that the media should have high lighted but the Horse Media is very pally pally

Roseblossom, the following quote was taken from Sportinglife.com:
Henderson said: "He’s completely sound but a minor, yet significant, muscle problem has been diagnosed and explains our concerns.
"We feel we don’t have sufficient time to treat this in order for him to do himself justice in the Champion Hurdle.
"We have unfortunately decided to put him away for the season to ensure he can begin next term as normal and 100% for a full campaign, which we obviously hope will lead us back to Champion Hurdle."
That, to me, is about as conclusive a statement as you can make and given that Binocular was being backed
before
he was confirmed as a possible starter, as well as McCoy’s admission that the horse has missed no work whatsoever, I think the betting public has every right to ask questions.
March 6, 2010 at 20:46 #280884Remember when Jim Bolger’s yard was invaded because of something similar? This is blatant stuff and the press and the racing authorities are ignoring it.Where are all the cry babies about the integrity of racing now that we need them? How can a horse be put away until next year according to Henderson and still not miss any work? Somebody is being taken to the races! Can you imagine Barney Curley being given a free ride like thia? Or Tony Martin? I readily admit that racing needs characters and excitement. Good guys and bad guys are needed to make racing fun. We need to cheer for the good guys and boo the bad guys but first we must clearly identify them. How can we generate excitement if the press don’t help? Controversy and uproar is the life blood of sport.Thumbs up and thumbs down is what the public pay for not this kind of milk toast reporting.Seventy thousand fill a football stadium every Saturday to roar their approval and dissapproval so lets get live action at the track too.If Binocular (the put away horse )beats Punjabi will he be greeted with silence as the punters mourn their faith? He should.I just cannot believe that JP would be party to this crap.

more chance of mer running in the Champion Hurdle than Binocular……Nicky will only run him if he is 100% spot on and the chances of that are about zero to ziltch.
Would love to see it but unless he absolutely sparkles on Wedenesday there’s no chance.
March 6, 2010 at 21:32 #280897Hi Fist
Since we know with absolute certaity that you will not be running does that mean that Binocular will not be running. If so why not say so and not be messing with the public. Is sparkling the same as 100% or is there room for wiggling there? What in the name of ***** is Henderson up to? Has any of the press spoken to the new vet ,or the old one for that matter. I just cannot believe that the racing authorities would allow this to continue. The man is already under a cloud.March 6, 2010 at 21:55 #280900That, to me, is about as conclusive a statement as you can make and given that Binocular was being backed

Charlie Chawke, head of the Goat Syndicate responsible for Forpadydeplasterer, said: "I am sorry to inform everyone that Pady is lame and will be boxed for at least three weeks. Tom Cooper says that this rules him out of Cheltenham and we are now more than likely looking at Punchestown.
But Pady is now back in the picture.
At the time both sets of connections no doubt believed absolutely in what they said. But things change all the time, some horses recover faster from setbacks than others.
So Binocular missed no work – what was his schedule? He probably wouldn’t have been doing any serious work immediately after the race, and it’s normal to keep a horse ticking over at some level when it comes out of training. As long as he was sound I’d have expected him to be doing some work. What about Kicking King back in 2005?
It’s called gambling for a reason and if you play antepost then you take an even bigger risk.
I’ll say it again: UNTIL A HORSE IS OFFICIALLY WITHDRAWN FROM A RACE IT COULD STILL RUN.
March 6, 2010 at 22:51 #280910To be fair horses are not machinea and if Binocular, like PDPlasterer, is beginning to show some signs of sparkle then they are quite right to have a change of heart.
As far as Punchestowns goes, the trainer is in a no-win situation. I think they’ve simply tried to be honest and have kept the public informed.
My own reading is that it is nothing to do with ‘putting people away’. I hardly think Henederson needs to resort to elaborate games, which he knows will undoubtedly put him under the microscope, just to get himself, or others, an edge in the betting markets.
All that said, it is very frusrtating for trainers to say a horse won’t run and then run it – throws the ante-post markets into turmoil. Much better to say ‘doubtful but still possible’ unless they are certain the horse is out.
March 7, 2010 at 03:12 #280927Better get back to the old system where trainers only shared with the owners the condition of their horses. All this transparency only leads to total confusion and the punter is the goat in it all. Better if the press kept away from the trainers and the owners. We wanted transparency and now it is killing the simple order of things. As was said above horses are in up to declaration stages and out after that. No if’s and’s or but’s.No maybe,no next year, no speak, period.
March 7, 2010 at 07:30 #280933Andy, you have a very clearly defined sense of victimhood when it comes to all things Irish, however I tend to agree you on this one, particularly the Binocular situation.
Henderson made it clear some time back that Binocular would NOT run in the 2010 Champion Hurdle. The horse this week has been backed from 999 into 22, most of the market activity taking place days before any announcement had been made. Bolger was absolutely crucified (deservedly so) by the UK racing media for similar a few short years ago.
Much was made by certain sections of the UK racing media on Rip Van Winkle’s will he/wont he participation in the build up to the Sussex Stakes last July. Ballydoyle’s regular press updates on the horses well documented foot problems right up to the day of the race led to calls of creating a "palaver", "unnecessary", "detracting from the race".
So I’ll be interested this week to observe how the previously outraged Alan Lee, Chris McGrath, Lydia Hislop and Dave Yeats among others, tackle one of their own for similar.

Hi Fist

The man is already under a cloud.Don’t really want to go there as there is no cloud….gone and finished.
Back on the subject of Binocular all Nicky has said is he had the horse checked and found nothing physically wrong with him. All he can do now is cross his fingers and hope he shows him enough at home to justify running him.
Binocular apparently thrives on work and if he could open his box by himself he’d be out on the gallops while the others were still sleeping.
I can’t see the couple of weeks off doing a horse like him much good. It won’t have helped that’s for sure.
It’s not like he’s a mad gambling trainer trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes and you could bet your life JP’s wasn’t one of those who bet him at 1000 on Betfair.
Nicky isn’t up to anything he’s come out and said there’s now a chance he might now make it but will only run if he feels the horse can do himself justice….nothing more nothing less.
Reading through the lines he seems a lot more upbeat about Puchestown’s participation than he does Binocular but we’ll know more later in the week.
