Anyone willing to take a punt on what might be the novice hurdlers to follow when the proper stuff gets back under way in the Autumn?
Two I’m looking forward too are:
First Lieutenant: Son of Presenting in training with Mouse Morris for Gigginstown (obvious comparisons with a certain Gold Cup winner). Won a point at Kilfeacle back in January and hosed up under Robbie Mac in a bumper at Gowran in March. Smashing looking animal and looks like he could develop into a top chaser one day.
Casual Conquest: Heard a rumour from a little birdie on the Curragh that DK is planning on sending the 2008 Epsom Derby favourite over timber. He was gelded a few weeks back and will start schooling in August/September. Very classy on the flat and always looked athletic enough to go jumping. Very interesting recruit but very few of the high profile flat recruits live up to the hype. He’s at the right address though – Galway Hurdle 2011?! <!– s:lol: –><!– s:lol: –>
July 27, 2010 at 10:35 #309035Obvious I know, but
Cue Card
is the one for me
Having re-watched the festival bumper over a dozen times, I still get amazed at how easily he won, pulling away up the hill but looking very immature
It’s been said it was a weak renewal, but I don’t reckon any of the festival races are weak
Form was franked at both Aintree & Punchestowns and would be great to see the Tizzard’s with a top class Hurdler (and chaser in time)
I haven’t got hugely involved ante post yet as want to see if he can jump, but this time last year Dunguib was 3/1 for the Supreme but to my mind CC was equally as impressive yet is 10/1 for the Supreme??
July 30, 2010 at 20:12 #310077Divine Rhapsody would be one I’m really looking forward to seeing in the Autumn. Looked very smart in the Land Rover. The Real Article looks a machine, but could be put away for the Champion Bumper.
August 16, 2010 at 19:27 #313124How about FIDDLEDEDEE, impressive Irish point and bumper winner now with JohnJo?
August 16, 2010 at 22:55 #313164How about FIDDLEDEDEE, impressive Irish point and bumper winner now with JohnJo?
I’ve mentioned her elsewhere CS but she should be unbeaten – she was very very unlucky to tip up in the Mares Final at Ballynoe, only problem is the trainer
August 20, 2010 at 13:57 #313795Nothing has impressed me more in Bumpers this season than TUS NUA. I don’t know the plans for her but she’s only four and if she was mine I’d be tempted to mop up a couple of flat races with her before sending her hurdling, …provided of course that she can jump. I’d do the same with Cue Card.
I normally prefer to follow those that take the Point, bumper, hurdle route, i.e For Bill
I’ve never understood why very impressive high grade Bumper winners are assumed to be star hurdlers of the future.
Quadco, Cousin Vinny, Dunguib to name but three, and yes, I stood for the Dunguib hype to my cost
I do wonder how Dunguib’s connections felt seeing Rite Of Passage win The Ascot Gold Cup. Missed opportunity if there ever was one.September 22, 2010 at 21:00 #318791AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
Don’t ever say I’m not good to you A horse to look out for this season that isn’t with Jonjo but a few miles up the road at Martin Keighley’s yard in Moreton in Marsh is causing a few ripples. The Duke’s old yard.
He didn’t come cheap but he’s a right horse and won his only race, a bumper at sunny Kilbeggan. Totally unfancied he had at least 16 horses in front of him 2f from home including a hot pot ridden by Nina Carberry and he cut through them like a knife through butter.
I am told he’s going the right way (did 2 sparkling bits over the last two weeks) and looks to be a bit special so he should be winning more than his fair share of races. Doubt if he’ll be starting at double figures as word gets around :0) but should make enough to buy a pizza or two first time he runs.

It’s a fact that a certain Paul Nicholls wanted this horse but Mr Webber managed to buy it at the sales. Having given Big Bucks a race in the World Hurdle the horse is expected to go chasing this season and I feel he could be the real deal with a mix of speed, stamina and guts. Often over-priced, it might not be long before this horse is being talked-up as a future Gold Cup winner

September 23, 2010 at 19:13 #318957Great research Walshy, some good prospects there, I’d suggest The Real Article and Tus Nua will turn out to be the best of your list.
Did you consider Fiddlededee, Prospect Wells, Hidden Universe or Colonel Mortimer? They seem to be the only omissions from your list that I can think of, off hand.September 23, 2010 at 19:16 #318959Good information there.
I personally like Ghizao, i think he will prove to be a decent horse.
Bobby Ewing is interesting, i was speaking to someone at Twisters about the horse, and they told me to mark him down as ‘one to watch in future races’, and if i remember correctly, the first time he raced after that comment, he won.
September 23, 2010 at 19:20 #318962First Lieutenant entered for Navan on Saturday, hope he runs.
September 23, 2010 at 19:54 #318973First Lieutenant entered for Navan on Saturday, hope he runs.
Good prospect, I’d already pencilled him and Askanna in on my provisional betting slip
September 23, 2010 at 20:38 #318982cheltenham specialist i could of pencilled them in aswell to be honest may of slipped my mind with all the horses there.lol
there are 2 horses for me from that list who i advise everyone to follow as a must:
SANG BLEU: In a recent interview paul nicholls was asked the question who is your next best thing coming through?
his reply was SANG BLEU, i have never had a horse who jumps fences so well as him as a novice he is one to stay on the right side of and my star of the future. that says it all really and all i need to know thank you. lol
The other one is FRANKLINO i no everyone at kings yard is raving bout this one and is going to be a star this year. i really fancy alan king to have a good season with all these smart prospects. got to be better than last year.
September 23, 2010 at 21:10 #318986First Lieutenant entered for Navan on Saturday, hope he runs.
Might drive on up to it if he’s declared tomorrow. Derek O’Connor was hugely impressed with him when he won at Kilfeacle and Robbie Mac didn’t have to move a muscle in his bumper.
Mouse will give him the softly softly approach as is his wont. Assume Slippers will ride him with Russell on the sidelines.
September 23, 2010 at 22:13 #319001All of those mentioned in recent posts were on my "watch" list so to speak.
FL is one that everyone seems to have noticed so unlikely to be much of a price when he runs.
Colin Bowe is a top trainer going places particularly with his ex-pointers like Askanna, he was Champion trainer last season and is likely to do the same in the Pointing ranks in Ireland this season, he seems particularly good with mares in Bumpers and Hurdles (all i’ve seen them in in fairness). Hopefully he’ll keep Brian O’Neill on for the first few starts at least.
Sang Bleu is a beauty – can tell that from the way he won his debut despite being knocked halfway to Marseille at the first hurdle (jumped the hurdle in a tie for second and was last by the time he’d recovered) in a v v v hot Maiden Hurdle. If Nicholls thinks he’s that good too then he’ll do for me.
Not sure who trains it but I’ve been told elsewhere that the Guy Cherel trained El Mondo has been sold to race on in the UK, he’ll probably end up over fences given that he was 2/2 in Auteuil hurdles at the back end of 2009. No idea who trains him now but well worth looking for.
September 23, 2010 at 22:50 #319006Colin Bowe is a name to keep an eye on for sure IS. I was impressed with Barry O’Neill’s ride on his Lets Go Sunshine yesterday at Downpatrick.
It’s a hoor of a track to ride but he rode the perfect race from the front and never panicked when Walsh and Townend looked to be going well in behind him.
September 24, 2010 at 12:34 #319076The first at Navan tomorrow looks a great maiden hurdle for this time of year. First Lieutenant, Priests Road and Drumfire & Pointilliste both of whom were rated 110+ on the flat at one time.
