Buveur D’Air won as he liked and his hurdling debut got yet another boost at Doncaster. He pulled quite hard in the early stages so you would imagine the stronger gallop at Cheltenham should be a distinct benefit. Unfortunately, the clueless Machin at his most annoying in his post-race interview with the trainer. Is he the only person on the planet who has backed the horse for the Neptune? There is absolutely no need to even contemplate stepping up in trip.
January 29, 2016 at 23:36 #1231171I agree but if you haven’t already then i’d advise you to back him for the Neptune.
He’ll have one more run, likely over 2m4f, and he’ll then shorten up for the Neptune ( i think he’s likely to win his next race given the options available )
I think a current problem for Henderson is the lack of a top class stable jockey like Geraghty, capable of giving informative feedback with context ( in relation to the best runners in Ireland, for example ) and standing his ground in discussion about race targets etc De Boinville is a very good jockey but not in Geraghty’s class
This season, Scudamore has 209 rides for Pipe. Sam T-D has 201 rides for Nicholls. Johnson 193 for Hobbs.
De Boinville has 70 for Henderson
January 29, 2016 at 23:59 #1231173Also backed for neptune, hendersons comments looked ominous, both the races he mentioned next for buveur dair are over 2m4, was contemplating waiting for a bigger price on the machine but once people catch on the races he mentioned and the entries come out, will be a sea of blue on oddschecker whether he goes for the neptune or not.
January 30, 2016 at 00:26 #1231176They had Tony Calvin in the RUK studio who said he telephoned the owner who expected the horse to go Dovecote (two miles?) and Supreme. Henderson one of the biggest waverers in the game. Sticking with my original bet.
January 30, 2016 at 21:22 #1231348Well done on Barters Hill, Zam. You got everything spot on.
He’s an interesting horse, for his determination alone. Nothing fancy about him, but you’d want him beside you at The Alamo!
January 30, 2016 at 22:44 #1231369Can you upload screen shots on here?

January 31, 2016 at 15:56 #1231462Very disappointed with Barters Hill. Literally fell over line and appeared to have nothing left. Jumping very poor in a small field. What is it going to be like in a much bigger one?
Amazed any bookmaker could shorten him on the basis of that. On that evidence looks very beatable.January 31, 2016 at 16:15 #1231464Also backed for neptune, hendersons comments looked ominous, both the races he mentioned next for buveur dair are over 2m4, was contemplating waiting for a bigger price on the machine but once people catch on the races he mentioned and the entries come out, will be a sea of blue on oddschecker whether he goes for the neptune or not.
I think he should still line up in the Supreme, it’s just the price shortening up for the Neptune should his next race be over that distance
The Dovecote at Kempton is 2 miles but i really don’t want to see him in that. Winners have a poor record at Cheltenham and i know Henderson sent Flown there before winning the Supreme but that was once in 30 years.
That said, it’s probably better racing in the Dovecote than nothing at all
January 31, 2016 at 18:07 #1231474Agree with you in part Stilvi over Barters Hill…he was very disappointing yesterday, jumped really poorly throughout and looked out on his feet late on….I still think he’s very much the one to beat in the Albert Bartlett though…
His attitude and will to win is absolutely first class and everything I’d want in a horse carrying my money in the AB….he can certainly jump better than that and he still has some big scalps in his profile so I’m willing to forgive one below par run.
The bookies had to shorten him across the board as there simply isn’t any strength in the opposition behind him….him and Up For Review were trading between 7/2 and 5/1 and it was 12/1 bar the two before the race yesterday so with Up For Review bombing out so badly he had to shorten…
I just don’t see anything strong enough to go past him in what looks a very, very weak race in my eyes…

Having backed the horse I wish I could share your enthusiasm. Similarly to Don Poli there is a feeling that whatever the opposition this type of horse will keep finding enough. I just have a feeling that he has reached his summit.
Shantou Village ran a very good trial yesterday. I know the trainer has been negative about the Albert Bartlett but given the green light I believe he should be favourite. Realistically, he isn’t going to beat Yanworth in a Neptune. Yes, it was a pretty dumb ride from Walsh and better ground might see him closer but actually reversing the form?
Take your point about the opposition but suspect there might be a few types lurking of at least similar ability to the Longsdon horse.

I backed Shantou Village on Saturday so I was watching him more than the others, but his jumping was absolutely brilliant. Other than Min, I haven’t seen a novice shape so well over his hurdles this year. He doesn’t have the tactical speed to stay with Yanworth and Bellshill over 2 and a half, but if he was stepped up in trip, I would be very, very keen on him against Barters Hill. He may get worried out of it late on, but he will be gaining lengths on BH at every hurdle if the pair jump as they did on Saturday.
The race at the weekend reminded me of they trial a few years ago when The New One and At Fishers Cross took on one another and both won at the festival and I have a funny feeling that history could repeat itself in the shape of Yanworth and Shantou Village.
February 11, 2016 at 16:09 #1233120Thought North Hill Harvey ran a cracker in the listed hurdle at Huntingdon today and for me was the moral winner conceding 4lbs to the winner…another great boost to the horse that thrashed him earlier in the season Barters Hill…still think he’s the strongest favourite and most likely winner of all the novice hurdles!
February 13, 2016 at 11:28 #1233477I’ve put this up in the BIG RACE – DISCUSSION forum, in the
Betfair Hurdle thread, but thought I should post it here too.I think that AFFAIRE D’Honneur could be a little unearthed gem.
He has shown a great deal of potential in his first run at Kempton
in December and I’ve backed him for the Betfair today. If he is as good as I hope, then he could be heading for one of
the Novice Races at The Festival. He’s entered in both the SUPREME
and NEPTUNE, and there’s plenty of 100/1 available for both. He’s also
available at 66/1 without MIN in the SUPREME with SKYBET and 66/1
without YANWORTH in the NEPTUNE with Paddy Power. At those odds you don’t need a lot on so even if it doesn’t go well
today, there’s little harm done. I’m having all the above.February 28, 2016 at 12:34 #1235526Done the Long Dog-Tombstone related double for the Neptune and Supreme.
February 28, 2016 at 13:28 #1235535Well AFFAIRE D’HONNEUR is just one of the many ante post’s bets of mine
that have sunk without trace. He most certainly won’t be running in either
the Supreme or the Neptune. I think he was really unlucky in the Betfair
Hurdle, losing his race at the start but running of really well through
the field to finish powerfully in 4th. Had he won the Betfair I think he
may well have taken his chance, but Harry Whittington has all but ruled
him out of Cheltenham. His target is the Imperial Cup, and I will be betting him there, and although
he still holds an entry in the Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle, it’s unlikely he
would run there just one week after the Imperial Cup, although Whittington says
it’s not out the question. I don’t think he would get in anyway, he would need
a lot of horses to drop out before he can get in off 133.I’m really disappointed, not least because my ante posts are down, but I think
this is going to be an exciting horse. I’ll be watching for him early and take
some prices for next years Festival if I can work out where he’s likely to be
aimed.March 12, 2016 at 12:16 #1237078Looks like YORKHILL going for neptune on him at 16s with MIN same price in supreme thank god they not in same race
