Hi mate, yeah, had the money counted, but I got 22’s, so the place money softened the blow. That wasn’t my view immediately after the race.
Definitely happy with how it’s going, and days when they don’t win, are helped by the EW’s like Jepeck and Regal Encore. I’d really like to see old Encore retired now.
Yeah, looking forward to trawling through the entries for the handicaps this week. Behaved myself this year with the handicaps, and kept it, more or less to The Pertemps and Kim Muir.
February 25, 2022 at 01:49 #1584595Sneaking one in before weekend. Like a go on The Devon National, and though rarely a successful race for me, I’ll go with The Two Amigos, who’s down the weights, and bypassed Haydock for this. Doesn’t win very often, but thought notable that they were happy for him to run in The Many Clouds, and interesting they they swerved Haydock for this. Worth a try.
Dawson City should go well too, and at the other end of the handicap from Amigos, I like The Late Legend.
Devon National – The Two Amigos
February 26, 2022 at 01:48 #1584808Fairly happy with The Two Amigos there, and although not a massive bet by any stretch, got it back comfortably.
Same applies to today, and no massive fancies, though I’ll be disappointed if Herbiers can’t build on last win.
After the big payout from Since Day One in November, he’s been too short for me, but he’s backable today.
Domaine De L’Isle and The Big Breakaway the main bets in the big chases, and swaying towards Achille as backup at Newcastle, but at this moment in time, just bet Domaine so far.
Thankfully swerved Ten Ten last time, but he gave me a fair old profit in running in this race last term, and I’m back for more. Definitely considering old Scoir Mear in that race too. Later on at Fairyhouse I’ll be watching The Bobbyjo from behind the couch.
1508 Fairyhouse – Scoir Mear 25’s
1508 Fairyhouse – Ten Ten
1515 Newcastle – Domaine De L’Isle 11’s
1537 Kempton – The Big Breakaway 8’s
1550 Newcastle – Since Day One 9-2
1610 Kempton – Herbiers 6’sMarch 5, 2022 at 01:21 #1585771Much better last Saturday with Since Day one winning again, decent EW from Scoir Mear, and good profit in running from Herbiers.
I think all three are worth noting. Since Day One has been good to me this year, and definitely has a future, while the much older Scoir Mear has to be considered for a repeat bid in The Leinster National. Very very interesting ride for Herbiers, and though he holds Cheltenham entries, got a couple of races in mind for him, and I’d love to see him at Aintree.
Few bets today, and though a Rule 4 attached, happy that the 18’s was too big for Minellacelebration in the opener at Newbury.
In the last at Navan, I was just going to stick with my old pal Fiveaftermidnight. She’s the rank outsider at 66’s, but another at a big price is Irregularheartbeat, and I have to cover him.
Great card at Kelso. I’ve topped up my Antepost on Faivoir to 12’s in The Morebattle, while I could also top up Hill Sixteen, but not a massive betting race for me, and I’d rather cover old Dingo. Hard to figure if this is serious target for the pair, with the big races at Aintree and Ayr on the horizon. Stablemate Seemorelights was a lot more like it last time, and I can see him running well.
1315 Newbury – Minellacelebration 18’s
Premier Chase – Dingo Dollar 15-2
Premier Chase – Hill Sixteen 29’s
Morebattle – Faivoir 12’s
1543 Kelso – Seemorelights 11-2
1705 Navan – Fiveaftermidnight 66’s EW 4p
1705 Navan – Irregularheartbeat 40’sMarch 6, 2022 at 11:47 #1585952Really chuffed with Fiveaftermidnight yesterday. Really chuffed now, not at the time. She couldn’t have been closer, and but first her jump at the last, she’d have done it. Was my main bet of the day, so a very nice return. That’s her paid her way at 66’s and 100’s this season, she’s been a good one to follow.
The last fence also cost me a winner with Hill Sixteen, and but for that, would have been another winner. Although not in the same league as the Fiveaftermidnight bet, it was still another nice EW.
Day rounded off nicely by Faivoir, who ran a nice race, and comfortably got my money back.
Decent Saturday for not having an actual winner.
Sticking with old Winter Escape again today. Ran a screamer last time, and if in the same mood, should go close.
Problem with the race is Donkey Years, and particularly Batcio. I like the pair of them too, and having put Batcio up a couple of months ago, as one to follow in the spring, then I’m tempted to cover him. Got to be realistic though, and it’s not really a two bet race.
1650 Leopardstown – Winter Escape 11’s
March 12, 2022 at 01:11 #1586585Only one Antepost this week, and that’s Ayr Harbour at Wolverhampton. Can beat that 16’s easily, but not putting anymore on.
With Suprise Package and Early Doors as per Big Races, and in The EBF Final, I thought Knappers Hill was worth chancing, for all there’s bound to be something lurking further down the market.
At Ayr, Wee Small Hours is a few pounds out the handicap, and he’s getting on at 13, but he looks too big, based on last run here. He got the last wrong that day, as well as getting brought to a halt by a loose horse when making an earlier move. Happy with the booking of Sean Quinlan, and he’s been given a huge chance by the handicapper.
EBF Final – Knappers Hill 11-2
1410 Ayr – Wee Small Hours 20’s
Imperial – Suprise Package 14’s EW 7pls
Lady Wulfruna – Ayr Harbour 16’s
Webster Cup – Early Doors 25’sMarch 12, 2022 at 22:25 #1586713Over the moon with Suprise Package today. Delighted for his owner too, who takes the time to give decent updates. Had a decent bet on him today, and after that 33’s at Punchestown last season, he’s one I’ll not be deserting him now. The manner of the win was the icing on the cake.
Also a very decent payday from Wee Small Hours. Can’t believe he didn’t win. I expected a big run, and he didn’t disappoint. I had a fair few quid on him, and got it back and more.
Ayr Harbour was ok, but Knappers Hill and Early Doors were not good at all.
The Leinster National is one of those regional Nationals that I love. Always a fairly big betting race for me, and no exceptions this year. Despite betting Stones and Roses a few times this year, this is the race I always had in mind for him.
Scoir Mear did me proud last year, and after a highly encouraging run last time, couldn’t leave him. Strange betting on him. My main bet was at the opening 10’s, and 11’s. I swore a wee bit when I seen Paddy Power and Sportsbook go 25’s. It didn’t last long, but managed to get 22’s on the exchanges.
I originally took Alfa Mix as a saver, but I can’t really justify three in a twelve runner race, so cashed him out. After today, I can handle if it he wins now, and I’ll have the same feeling if Franco De Port or Champagne Platinum win.
Guiri is an interesting one earlier on the card. He’s almost certainly one for Fairyhouse or Punchestown, but at the same time I can’t leave him at the price.
At Limerick, my old pal The Ballyboys is back out. I thought he travelled well when I bet him last time, only for him to go out like a light. He was 100’s so I had to give him another go.
I put up Limerick Lace a few weeks back (didn’t bet her), and she was decent. Looking forward to seeing her, and another JP one, Better Times Ahead is slowly getting his act together. Watching him.
1455 Naas – Guiri 20’s
1540 Limerick – The Ballyboys 100’s EW 6pls
Leinster National – Scoir Mear 22’s
Leinster National – Stones and Roses 14’sMarch 13, 2022 at 11:42 #1586817Another bull’s eye, VTC! Fantastic. Pity SP was 20-1! I think Suprise Package nonplussed all the TV pundits, left them speechless, largely. However, given its performances in Ireland, which you have followed and pointed out, I was not surprised that it won, but perhaps a little by the margin of victory.
I was mystified by Wee Small Hours. I saw Sean Quinlan look back after he’d gone past the leaders three out and he looked to have race sewn up, but the horse ran out of gas in the last furlong. Maybe he went too soon, but there are so many maybes.
March 13, 2022 at 19:41 #1586907Cheers mate, delighted with him, especially having followed him since the start. As for Wee Small Hours, he was like a winner, but would still have been nicer obviously for him to keep going. In hindsight he may have went too soon, but that’s harsh, as I wasn’t thinking that at the time. Just one that got away.
No such worries today. Less than two months left of my season, and I won’t have a costlier race than The Leinster National. That was a sore one.
March 14, 2022 at 22:28 #1587083No real need to go over these too much, as discussed in Race Threads.
Hopefully be a good week, and if can nab a wee result here and there, that would be fab.
Ultima – Frodon 16’s EW 7pls
Ultima – Gericault Roque 16’s
Ultima – Vintage Clouds
Champion Hurdle – Saint Roi 80’s EW
Boodles – Brazil 11’s
National Hunt Chase – Stattler 33’sMarch 16, 2022 at 00:05 #1587418Really happy with Day One, and the Stattler win meant a lot. It was a proper go I had on him a year ago, and these ones very rarely come off. Fair cheered him home. Been following him since the start, and in one of my favourite races too. I bet him before his Albert Bartlett run last year, but actually went off him a wee bit in that race, and only when he won at Naas did I think he might have a chance. Happy Days.
It never looked like happening for Brazil, but loved his attitude, though wouldn’t be in a rush to take on the second again.
Brazil was a real pick me up after Gericault Roque got nabbed. Nice horse that, and should be on my radar for a while now. Money back in running for him, which was important, as it softened the blow of a fairly big bet on Frodon.
Even Saint Roi ran well, so all in all a good day.
Two problems with tomorrow. One, I usually bomb after a day like today, and in what is usually my least favourite of the four days, I have a fair few selections. Too many in fact.
The Brown Advisory is a proper race, can’t wait. Was gonna sit it out, but on the same day I bet Stattler last year, I also bet Gailard Du Mesnil for this. Was a smaller token bet that I laid off anyway, but keep coming back to him. He’s coming along nicely, and I think he might just be overpriced.
As I said though, some field. Was at the preview night in Motherwell last week, and L’Homme Presse was really popular. Didn’t quite see it myself, but watched him back a few times, and I’ve came round to him. Very good chance I’ll bet him for Gold Cup. Very rare that I pay heed to anything I hear at these preview nights.
Covered the rest in big races.
It goes without saying how much a Tiger Roll win would mean to me. Big Day for him. Please let it happen.
Less keen on Tronador now, and scrapped the EW Plan, but happier with McFabulous after the run of Bell Ex One, and I’m increasingly confident of breaking my Grand Annual hoodoo, particularly with Midnight or Editeur. Just watch Andy Dufresne chin one of them.
Put The Kettle On was a late addition, but since cashed out, and I’ll play her if any joy in first two races.
I’ve decided to bet Gumball in running, just to trim the selections.
Brown Advisory – Gailard Du Mesnil
Coral Cup – Dans Le Vent EW 8pls
Coral Cup – Tronador 40’s
Champion Chase – Envoi Allen 25’s
Cross Country – Tiger Roll 9-2
Cross Country – Midnight Maestro
Grand Annual – Editeur Du Gite 16’sMarch 16, 2022 at 08:25 #1587437Stattler was a fantastic antepost! You will be retiring soon. It was too short for me yesterday. However, I followed on Brazil. Great selection.
March 16, 2022 at 10:36 #1587471Thanks mate. I wish, but it at least paid for the week and more, so pressure off. Got him at 125’s to win yesterday, and then The Grand National next year, so hopefully another long range one for me to look forward to.
Glad you were on Brazil. He really had been ticking along nicely, but don’t know how he managed to beat the fav. Don’t know if I’d fancy him as much next time.
Good luck today
March 17, 2022 at 12:06 #1588001Disappointing day yesterday, and just about getting over Tiger Roll now.
Old boy ran his heart out, but not to be. What a legend he’s been for me, and he’ll be missed. That NH Chase win, and his 2018 wins in The National and Cross Country will live long in the memory. They don’t come around too often these ones, so got to enjoy them when you can.
Happy enough with Gailard Du Mesnil yesterday, and I took back my stake on Envoi Allen in running, so for all it was a blank, that lay, and the two non runners meant it was a disappointing, but not too costly a day.
Covered my selections today in Cheltenham Section….
Pertemps – Born Patriot 20’s
Dallas Des Pictons 33’s
Sire Du Berlais 20’s
Ryanair – Janidil 12’s
Plate – Born By The Sea 80’s EW 6pls
Plate – Celebre D’Allen 6’s
Plate – Grand Paradis 14’s
Kim Muir – Mindsmadeup 50’s EW 6pls
Kim Muir – School Boy Hours 10’sMarch 18, 2022 at 00:41 #1588368On to Final Day, and I was going to through that lot with a comedy lambasting, but sadly poor Mindsmadeup didn’t make it, and I’ve not heard about Born Patriot yet, so it would be highly inappropriate. The soul searching continues.
Quick recap, and unlike Wednesday, Thursday was a costly day. Lost a few quid on The Kim Muir. Kicking myself as although a big betting race normally, neither would have justified the stake. Lesson learnt.
The Plate is never a massive staking race for me, my record is patchy, and I at least didn’t go mad on them. Grand Paradis is just nowhere near as good as I thought he’d be. It’s that simple, and after two years of betting Coole Cody, I’ve missed his two big wins.
No regrets with Janidil, small stakes, and it was for interest.
Less said about The Pertemps the better.
Final Day, and going into it with my head down. Not a good sign.
Can’t lose on the week thanks to Stattler, and probably worth noting that my profit on The Gold Cup thanks to Galvin and Conflated has made a huge difference too.
My day obviously revolves around Galvin. Love him, been with him from the start, and he’d be a big winner. I’d just love him to do it.
Also with the equally likeable Royal Pagaille, and if trainer form is anything to go by, he’s not out of it.
(Also have Aye Right, Asterion Forlonges, and Tornado Flyer running for me thanks to Conflated)
Covered the others in the race threads, and I really think Faivoir and particularly Herbiers are far too big.
County Hurdle – Faivoir 66’s EW 6pls
County Hurdle – Suprise Package 11’s
Gold Cup – Galvin 33’s
Gold Cup – Royal Pagaille 33’s
Martin Pipe – Herbiers 50’s EW 6pls
Martin Pipe – He’s A Hardy Bloke 25’s
Martin Pipe – The Goffer 33’sMarch 18, 2022 at 22:42 #1588803Another poor day, and although ahead at end of week, my worst by a long way since 2015.
All downhill after Stattler, and hard to pick out any real highlights from Wednesday onwards.
Of today’s bets, not sure what next for Galvin. No match for A Plus Tard, and the winner was a repeat of Native River. Touted them both as Gold Cup winners early doors, only to miss out on bumper payouts by a year. Very frustrating, but no real shock to me see him do that today. That win in The Close Brothers three years ago was unreal.
At least better runs today from a few of them. Pass marks for Royal Pagaille, Herbiers, Suprise Package, and Faivoir, with money back at least for Suprise Package. Herbiers looks ideal for Aintree, while I’m hoping Scottish Champion Hurdle is where we’ll see Faivoir next.
Looking forward to a quieter time now before Aintree, but Midlands National up first.
Hewick was the main Antepost selection, but I’m increasingly warning to Screaming Colours. Having a good go at him EW. The big quandary is Time To Get Up. Hard race last time, proper hard race. I thought he’d be ideal for Kim Muir or Fairyhouse, but he’s back here, and I can only assume he’s good to go.
Also at Uttoxeter is my old pal Jepeck, and can’t pass up the 25’s, while Teescomponentsyess looks an interesting one.
Manofthemountain was too big at Kempton off a break, and couldn’t leave him.
1500 Uttoxeter – Jepeck 28’s EW 4pls
1500 Uttoxeter – Teescomponentsyess
1515 Kempton – Manofthemountain 11’s
Midlands National – Hewick 16’s
Midlands National – Screaming Colours 12’s EW 7plsMarch 20, 2022 at 01:30 #1589053Much much more like it yesterday. As I said, I had a good go on Screaming Colours, and once he cleared the last “Screaming” summed me up nicely. Really pleased for connections, as this has been a real bridesmaid horse, and he deserves to get his head in front.
Jepeck also a nice return at 33’s, and good to get well back on track after a disappointing Cheltenham.
Another satellite National today, this time The Ulster version at Downpatrick. Amaulino was a big flop for me last year, and he’s back up to main hope, Thunderosa.
Looking back at Cheltenham, and forward to the spring festivals, a few who remain in the notebook, and a few on the radar….
Aintree
No need to go over the National hopes, as already well covered, but I usually like to put a few early hopes up for The Topham. I never did get the chance to celebrate that win on Torn and Frayed in January, as we lost Midnight Shadow an hour later. A sad day obviously, but this horse has got more to offer, and this looks a real option for him.Mullins looks to be increasingly targeting the race, and my old pal Annamix would be interesting here. I’m not convinced they’re finished with him, and they’ve certainly been mucking about with him.
Another pair who missed Cheltenham, were Palmers Hill, and Janika If I see them in the entries, it’ll be very difficult not to have an Antepost, particularly on Palmers Hill, but wouldn’t be first time that Janika has appealed for this.
Herbiers looks as good as ever, and a solid effort on Friday. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t run in one of the big handicaps.
Saint Roi, I thought, ran very well in The Champion Hurdle, and for all he looks ideal for that big hurdle that closes Punchestown, or The Galway Hurdle, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him rock up here on Day One.
I’ve had an Antepost onAlqamar for The Scottish Champion Hurdle, but equally, he’d have options at this meeting, should the ground be preferable here.
I was very keen all year on Before Midnight for The Grand Annual, and he’s maybe one for The Red Rum Chase.
Fairyhouse/Punchestown
Haven’t forgotten Ontheropes, who was a late absentee on Tuesday, but at this stage, he appeals for Irish National, or the big Chase on the Saturday at Punchestown. As for The Irish National, the main two remain Stratum, and Time To Get Up, who crucially, showed no ill effects yesterday from that slog at Haydock. As well as The Topham, I suppose this could be a realistic target for Annamix. He’s no superstar, but Gailard Du Mesnil still shaped well on Wednesday, and he can surely win before the seasons out, and he’ll certainly have options at these meetings.
Saint Roi already mentioned.
I’m willing to forgive School Boy Hours that run in The Kim Muir, and he’ll surely have a few options, not least The Irish National.
Thought the ground was the undoing for Andy Dufresne, not to mention the poor runs from many in the yard. He’s one that I remain very interested in.
Sandown
I’m still trying to work out that run from Frodon on Tuesday. Didn’t seem any real effort to try and adopt usual tactics, she almost seemed relaxed to be chasing them. That was never going to work. It’s bound to have shaved a few pounds off, and though the trip would ask questions, I just wonder if we’ll see an entry for The Bet365 Gold Cup?Just a few ramblings, and the entries should be coming in soon for a few of these.
Ulster National
Amaulino 12’s
Thunderosa 7’s -
