VtC The old boy Jepeck rewarded your confidence. There wasn’t a moment when he gave the impression that he would struggle. An inspired selection. Again. Mega plaudits.

Lovely job, you must have a fair stash in the punting bank by now! Anything got your eye tomorrow? I’m backing my old (un)reliable friends Blackbow and El Barra.

Thanks Grass. Yeah, going very well Grass. Obviously delighted with Jepeck, and the profit made in running on Valadom was my biggest in running win for a good while.

Still a long way to go, but certainly at Early January, furthest ahead I’ve been at this stage. Good to get that one yesterday, as I often go off the rails in November and January in particular. Watch me crash and burn today now lol.

Great card at Fairyhouse, and like loads, but several of them too short. I’ve mentioned Thedevilscoachman and Glenquin Castle a few times now, and they’ll maybe be a backable price one of these days. I’ve not made much at all from following him, as he’s only been included in a few perms, which didn’t exactly perform well. Jumping Jet, and Britzka are other interesting ones today.

I’ll stick to those at prices today.

Already mentioned Eclair De Beaufeu in the race thread, while also considering Batcio.

Fiveaftermidnight needs no introduction on this thread. Hot race, but no surprise to see me get a run for my money to four places around 50’s. Like it when she’s unconsidered.

Earlier on the card, I’ve went with Miss Pronunciation. On breeding, should be good in time, and this looks like a race where she has a chance of sneaking third.

Later on is Feelgood Island. Ran a howler when I put him up a few weeks back, but much more like it over fences next time. He’s hard to recommend for the win in this, but looks to have a realistic EW chance, and he’s strictly getting bet if any luck earlier.

That’ll do it, but I’d maybe consider Spades Are Trumps later on if I had any luck earlier.

    Fairyhouse
    1320 Miss Pronunciation 30’s EW
    1350 Fiveaftermidnight EW 4 Pls
    1420 Eclair De Beaufeu 12’s

Having a rare go at Meydan today, not even sure what part of Ireland it’s in.

Mainly because Stunning Beauty is running. She’s not got near what I thought she would, but the potential remains, and happy to bet her at 12’s.

In the last, I really liked Harry’s Bar, but the price for Live In The Moment looked too big, and Stone of Destiny just had to be added at the price too.

    Meydan
    1655 – Stunning Beauty 12’s
    1730 – Live In The Moment 33’s EW 5pls
    1730 – Stone of Destiny

Stunning Beauty disappointing again, but still worth considering next time on that run. Live In The Moment was more like it though, and made it all worthwhile.

First race at Fairyhouse interesting. Josh D’Id and Westy Fox on my radar this year, but not sure I want to bet both them in this race. On the verge of leaving Westy Fox, as I can’t work out why he’s back out so quickly, but this race looks more realistic than last assignment. He’s hard to justify, but there’s a race in him, so don’t mind the risk at this price. I’m hoping that this isn’t the day for Josh, but still reckon I seen some potential last year. Annamix interesting over 2m Hurdle with The Thyestes a fortnight away.

Great card at Kempton. In the 1332, I’m with Twenty Twenty. Questions to ask off a layoff, up in grade, but Jamie Moore takes the leg up for a change on him, and I’m hopeful. I’m also with him on A Toi Phil. Old favourite of mine. Quiet spin round Cheltenham a fortnight ago should have him spot on. Ran well here on this card last year, and 10lb lower now. He’s just preferred to Wishing and Hoping, who I’d cover if I had any earlier luck.

Very average record in The Lanzarote, but ended up with three here, as per big race thread. Only change is that I ended up topping up Ch’tibello.

At Warwick I’ve topped up my pair in The Classic, as they’re both bigger now, while in The Pertemps Qualifier, I’m considering Sire Du Berlais. Looks obvious that he’s going for a qualifying run, but there must also be a chance that he’s getting another pop at The Stayers. In which case, he’d romp this.

Cashed out Westy Fox, and will consider him in running

    1332 Kempton – Twenty Twenty 20’s
    Lanzarote – Ch’tibello 14’s
Lanzarote – Dans Le Vent 12’s
    Lanzarote – William Henry 33’s EW 5pls
    Classic – Achille 10’s

An absolute washout of a day yesterday, and the only one to run with any credit was Dans Le Vent. Should collect from him again later in the season.

    Nothing much more to add.

Should sit it out today, but one picked out, and taking a chance on old Mick The Jiver in The Veterans at Punchestown. If he runs better than that lot yesterday, that would be a start.

Sums my weekend up really, when an EW at Meydan is the highlight, but I’m thankful for it, and it made a small difference.

I really should be leaving it alone now after that, but another good card at Punchestown tomorrow, and looking forward to seeing how Brazil gets on again, and also looking forward to seeing Limerick Lace.

Both certainly too short to back, but one I am backing, is a very old favourite, The Ballyboys. Bet him a lot in running a few years back, and he regularly paid his way, and he’s also given me some nice EW returns.

Very encouraging comeback at Limerick the other week, back to his last winning mark, and a very promising jockey booking. I’ve taken the opening 20’s Win but I’ll definitely be trying to beat that, and I’ll be taking the six places.

Really decent cards at Ascot, Haydock, and Navan today, and hopeful I can have a better time of it after last Saturday.

    Ascot
Main interest for me is my old pal Palmers Hill. Regretting not betting him at the 6’s midweek, and too short on his own. I’ve mentioned before that I see him more as a Kim Muir horse than one for The Plate, and this step up in trip is interesting. If he wins tomorrow, I reckon it’ll be The Ultima, but I could even see him as possibly one for The Topham or The National itself.

Really liked Anythingforlove, but the price has gone

N’Golo looks interesting as well at a big price, and he’s considered at the moment.

    Haydock
A very strong looking renewal of The Peter Marsh. I’m with Royal Pagaille Antepost, and as I’ve bet him for Gold Cup, I’m certainly not adding more on him. Certainly not adding Remastered, as I’ve also bet him for Gold Cup. His run here last time, big weight or not, was a bit deflating. However, I know jumping the name of the game, but he would have walked that Ladbrokes Trophy if he hadn’t fallen, and I still think he’s very very good. I’ll know tomorrow.

Smashing race with Lake View Lad, Empire Steel, Sam’s Adventure, and Lord Du Mesnil in there too.

In The New One Hurdle, it would be great to see Tommy’s Oscar continue his good run, but I’ve went with Garo De Juilley at a big price. But out of form, but not too long back he was going well, and fingers crossed for a revival, in a weak enough renewal.

    Navan
Two smashing handicap hurdles on the card, but not necessarily the type of race I do too well in.

Looking forward to seeing Tiger Roll, and I’ll have a wee sentimental bet on him, but certainly can’t bet him here. Not betting Scoir Mear or Midnight Maestro. Hope I don’t regret that, and I’m trusting that this is a prep for both. In the end, I could justify betting the three of them, so I plumped for Curious Times, who I thought could outrun his odds.

In the 1415, I really like Never Off Duty long term, but at much bigger odds, Askann and Aa Bee See made appeal.

Palmers Hill, Remastered, and Royal Pagaille will be permed in definitely.

N’Golo a possible too, still like this horse.

Good old Royal Pagaille and he was a welcome winner. That, combined with Curious Times coming in, meant I kept ahead comfortably, and after last Saturday, very happy

Can’t describe how deflated I was after Remastered’s fall at Newbury. Thought that was him in the verge of booking his place in The Gold Cup, and that he had taken a cracking Slip for the double with him. Don’t feel as bad now, as he’s not up to that level on last two runs. The Ultima on the other hand…..

    The rest were brutal.

Three bets today, and I’m with Dashel Drasher Antepost. Almost left Master Tommytucker, but the three places gave me a bit of insurance. I had to cover him.

Two weeks after giving up the ghost with Echo Watt, I’m back with him. His runs were strange lately, and for all he looked as if he wasn’t spot on, I couldn’t think of a race that they could have in mind for him. At the price, I’m happy to risk him in the hope that it’s a long term plan.

Absolutely gutted with my old pal Master Tommytucker yesterday, and really really affected me that one.

Definitely a crisis of conscience last night, and following a horse with obvious jumping issues had me questioning myself.

Just horrible, and such a likeable type. I hope it was quick.

Was going to duck it all week, but as much as not proud to be back as quick, another old pal, Thunderosa, is out tomorrow on a nice looking mark, and hoping he can put a smile back on my face.

Thunderosa a total no show on Monday, very poor.

On to today, and of my favourite races of the year, The Thyestes.

Big betting race for me, and reluctantly left out Death Duty, Franco De Port, and Coko Beach.

Escaria Ten left out too, but he’s as big a focus to me as any of them. Serious bet on him for Aintree. I’d love him to finish sixth or seventh here, but should he win, he’ll be a free bet for Aintree.

Stones and Roses my big hope, but looks like he’s just missing out. My old pal Ontheropes is a bit forgotten here, and although I’ve taken 16’s, I’m hoping to see bigger.

Eklat De Rire is the backup.

Really liked Mr Adjudicator a couple of years back, and I was happy with his comeback run. I think he looks perfect for Coral Cup, although I did throw a few pounds his way for The Stayers. Not betting him here, but I’ll be watching closely.

No joy in Thyestes, and for all he’s looking a tricky customer, probably worth persevering with.

Skybet Chase is a race I always have a decent go at, but even then, four selections is excessive. I’ll either lay Canelo or Nuts Well before the off, or try to get stakes back in running.

Poor looking renewal of The Cotswold, where if back on track, Chantry House should be hard to beat, but I’ve topped up my Antepost on Santini, and I think Kauto Riko can outrun his odds.

I’m ahead of the market with Torn and Frayed, but at the same time I’m surprised he’s now Fav.

Fiveaftermidnight back out, and at 50’s+, no way I’m missing her.

Don’t even know where to start with Midnight Shadow. Had a long tribute typed up for him, but it didn’t do him justice. Been with him from his first race, and he’s been some horse to follow.

Without a doubt the worst moment in all my years of watching racing, and there’s been far too many anyway. Horrifying to watch, and I’ve not got too many more of these in me. Been numb for hours after watching that.

Coming six days after the horror of watching poor Master Tommytucker, been a fair bit of soul searching, and was close to jacking it all in altogether.

Unfortunately, I’m totally immersed in it, and I know I’m carrying on, for all I won’t defend it anymore.

Midnight Shadow won a Scottish Champion Hurdle, a Relkeel, a Dipper, and a Paddy Power Gold Cup, as well as numerous other big runs. What a horse to own, and an absolute star of a horse.
