Just a humorous little jibe from an old fogey to a younger wanna-be old fogey
Yep, ’twill always be batsman to me, though it’s of no matter that it’s officially been neutered; after all we never had bowlman
Here you go Nathan and ECB:
Thirder
Nightwatcher
12th er…
Imprudent PointThe English language lacks euphonious neuter terms: ‘person’ replacing man/woman is cumbersome and there isn’t one to replace he/she other than the inanimate ‘it’ which would be pejorative; hence the awkward adoption of the plural ‘they’ as a neuter singular by the non-binary cohort
I meet changes to language and idiom with a light shrug and weak chuckle

I think I already am one!
Someone told me “Nightwatchman” is now “Nighthawk” but I think he might have been pulling my leg.
July 10, 2023 at 19:22 #1654975I remember my father expressing resentment back in the day as he claimed the word “gay” had been hijacked by what he called the homosexual community and he felt he could no longer use it under its former definition.
I’m not entirely sure what he would have made of the world in 2023.

July 10, 2023 at 19:43 #1654978I’ve heard the term Bazball bandied about: what is it?
July 10, 2023 at 19:55 #1654979Amazingly, Wikipedia has a fairly detailed explanation:

Also somewhat surprising is that ‘Bazball’ doesn’t get underlined as a spelling mistake when I type it.
July 10, 2023 at 20:06 #1654980Thanks, I feared it was an evolution of ‘The H**dred’ or some such bollox but no, just a new approach to the proper game, and given the fine entertainment provided by this Ashes series it seems welcome
July 13, 2023 at 18:42 #1655210Blast! A first defeat of the season for Lancashire. If they had survived for just 10 more deliveries it would have been a draw.
July 13, 2023 at 20:44 #1655220Sounds like a gripping match for the neutrals.
I hope this outground becomes a regular again.

I know they dislike the term and yes it hasn’t worked in two out of three matches but we’re in with a serious chance here despite the Biblical rainfall that appears to be coming.

July 23, 2023 at 08:01 #1656221So it looks like the aussies are going to get away with it looking at the forecast for today. I’ll be surprised if there is any play at all.
Turning to the next home ashes series in 2027, it looks like the most northerly venue will be Trent Bridge as both Yorks & Lancs miss out. After the disgraceful scenes at Lord’s with some MCC members abusing the Aussie players, maybe there should be a one year ban placed on them from hosting a test match. No, thought not.
July 23, 2023 at 09:55 #1656223Tbh, my preference is for venues with historical records for delivering five days play and a result.
And, though I’m a Lancastrian, Old Trafford has no business hosting Test matches using those criteria.
I’m not sure The Oval has either – decent weather, but so many “pearler” batting wickets.
Outrageous for Headingley ever to miss out – cracking record of delivering riveting Test cricket.
You can’t not have Lord’s and I think if it was a football match said incident wouldn’t even have been reported – passions clearly run high in both games.
My permanent five would be: Edgbaston, Lord’s, Trent Bridge, Headingley, Rose Bowl.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 23, 2023 at 17:19 #1656272From the BBC:
‘In the history of Tests Manchester has lost 24 days completely to rain and two Tests abandoned.’
Which I think backs up what Ian is saying rather well. Fully agree about Headingley as well.
They were saying on TMS that The Oval locked in a long term deal long ago, probably when the powers that be cared even less about the vast majority of the country that lies outside London than they do now.
July 23, 2023 at 17:29 #1656274Anyone who follows the Red Rose County knows the Manchester weather is not very helpful. Lancashire almost always lose more time in their home fixtures than any other county.
Having said that, the weather has not cost England The Ashes. The damage was done in not winning the first Test.
Of course, it would have been much better if there had been at least two Test matches in the sunny month of August. But the ECB decided that The Hundred is more important than the most prestigious fixture in the history of cricket.

I read this from you the other day, CAS, and tbh it confirmed what I had long suspected.
Old Trafford is a fine cricket ground, with arguably far more of a cricketing heritage than, say, the Rose Bowl down here in Hampshire.
But it’s in Manchester, west of the Pennines and all too often it just doesn’t deliver cricketing weather.
Yes, England threw away this Series in the earlier Tests, but that doesn’t alter the fact Old Trafford is IMO too risky a venue, weather wise, to be used for Test cricket.
Conversely, to me, it’s absolute insanity not to have a permanent Test at Headingley.
Quite apart from generally enjoying the better weather, of all the England Test venues I’d say Headingley is the venue most likely to deliver a result every year.
There’s always something in the pitch for the bowlers and the trees around the ground have long made the ball move in the air.
You can’t have elite five-day sporting events in the 21st century that don’t deliver a result – it’s not tenable any more and they need to be looking at the five venues most likely to deliver a result and into reserve days if insufficient hours of play are achieved the first five days.
I know this can lead to play on deteriorating wickets, but that’s even more likely to deliver a result and would IMO add to the excitement.
Test cricket has come a long way – gone are the ludicrous Thursday to Tuesday Tests with Sunday left blank, and though “Bazball” can resemble a 20-over slog with technically-imperfect top edges flying for six, it’s highly entertaining.
But I reckon this weekend Test cricket has lost a lot of the casual audience it built up in that amazing Headingley Test and IMO they need to explore every avenue of avoiding that going forwards.
