Not sure how the ground will be affected by the forecast rain today but all things considered I like Oriental Fox in this. Lost by a short head to the classy Tominator last year and although carrying ten pounds more this time, he has held his own in some very good cup races since and looks to have improved. A decent draw and stable flying he can bring it home at 9/1.

I agree with you Rich, I thought he was unlucky last year to be caught and I’m sure this has been the target since then. The 10lbs is probably fair for his running since then, I thought he was impressive winning the Cesarewitch Trial over 2m 2f at Newmarket last September off 6lbs less when carrying 9st 10lbs, so neither top weight or distance are a problem to him.
I think he is a big threat to my selection, Van Percy, who I picked out earlier in the week. I think he is a progressive horse who could still be well handicapped, even though up 6lbs from his last run where he won a good handicap at Newmarket. The only question to be answered is if he will get the trip, but by the way he ran on really well when winning last time over 1m 6f, I think he looks like he could even improve for the extra 2f. His price has been shortening over the past few days, but you can still get 12-1 with Betvictor (as short as 8-1 with Coral), I think that’s still a decent bet although fortunately I managed to grab a few more points before he shortened.
I’m a dyed in the wool jumps man, but I do like these marathon flat races.
Good luckJune 27, 2014 at 13:46 #484035Van Percy is an improving sort and did it nicely last time in a competitive race, and should hold form with Tropical Beat. Don’t think trip would be a worry as there is stamina on the dam line, but if the ground softens up that could be more of a concern.
Johnston just had another winner, his horses are coming to hand nicely.
June 27, 2014 at 14:38 #484042I am not sure if I fancy anything strongly for the Plate. I have noticed signs of life from the quiet Johnston yard though.
I heard that this Muraaqaba in the opener at Newmarket tonight can go a bit. By Dubawi out of Nufoos she might turn out decent. Charlie Hills Hundi was tipped for this race but seems very weak in the betting.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I agree with you Rich that from my point of view I would rather it stays firm as he has won well on that recently. He has run well on all ground, he won easily on heavy in 2012 at Carlisle and ran a really good race on soft in a top notch York race last September, where he came with a eye catching smooth run to lead, but was caught in the last furlong when he tired a bit.
The ground itself doesn’t bother me, he seems to handle it all, but you are right, it is more of a worry if it were to soften as his stamina is as yet unproven.
I see some showers are due late Saturday morning, I hope the weather forecasters are as accurate as Michael Fish’s "hurricane?…..what hurricane".

Unrelated to the thread about the Plate but this Johnston runner made all and won by more than 3 lengths. The Charlie Hills horse came right back in in the betting but could only finish eighth. Worth keeping an eye on Muraaqaba next time I think.

June 28, 2014 at 10:03 #484154DARK CRUSADER for me at 9/1 he must of been a big price at start of the week too.
June 28, 2014 at 10:19 #484155How about Boite at the crazy odds of 50/1?
If this was trained by Stoute or Haggas, there would be all sorts of mutterings about plots and ‘handicap good thing’. Instead, the horse who ran in the German Derby and finished close to Leading Light in the Queen’s Vase is unconsidered from a mark of 97, minus Jordan Nason’s useful 7lb claim.
That’s where my £1 is going.
June 28, 2014 at 11:53 #484183Well spotted the young fella, ill have a quid e/w along with my own selection suegioo.
June 28, 2014 at 15:08 #484214Typical, I had Angel Gabriel in the Chester Cup and he bolts up when I leave him alone.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 29, 2014 at 15:06 #484334Backed Suegioo at Chester, felt loyal and had a little tickle on him at 12s for this. Looking back I should have backed him each-way but he ran a great race. In hindsight I should have done Angel Gabriel as well, but there you go. Also thought about the forecast but again there you go. I like Suegioo, I did feel Harley could have ridden a better race, he hoped to do the winner for a turn of foot by following him through when that wasn’t the best idea. Suegioo keeps going, I would have tried my hardest to get first run on the winner. Both are good horses though, and could prove to be group class in time.
If only there are odds about for the 2 miler on Champion’s Day. If the ground comes up soft then I would have a quiet word in the kind Doctor’s ear, informing him that a handily ridden Suegioo would be there and there abouts.
June 30, 2014 at 14:45 #484398I backed Ardlui and Waterclock ew; watched it on the screen at Newmarket and thought that Ardlui had hung on for 4th place, only to find [when I went to the bookies to collect my winnings] he’d mised out on 4th by a nose
