It’s good ground tomorrow. Will Shishkin be able to keep up?

Pic D’Orhy will be fully wound up for tomorrow. Shishkin won’t. But sixteen lengths (albeit the Nicholls horse was eased) is a lot of ground to make up.

On form a two horse race and if Shishkin is anywhere near ready to go a one horse race but Minella Drama does has race fitness on his side. A race to just watch.

    Something new again……
I guess Shishkin didn’t feel fit enough or Nicky forgot to walk the course.

Cheek pieces, whipped around, refused to start.

Despite his wins at Ascot and Aintree last season, I think Shishkin has never been quite the same since the Clarence House clash with Energumene. He had to dig very deep and it left a mark, as shown when he was pulled up early at Cheltenham next time. He has never been a reliable performer since and it looks like he has fallen out of love with the game now.

Now getting to the stage where you simply can’t put any trust in him – he just didn’t want to know today and it was similar to the QMCC ‘run’ where he did actually elect to start but showed no inclination to actually get involved in the race.

Worry is that these antics are now getting progressively worse as we go along and could it be that these flat spots that we all assumed was him simply being outpaced at shorter trips was him actually thinking twice about wanting to race?

At least Cobden got a winner, so he can pretend he does not mind not riding the best horse in the yard in a Grade 1. ;-)

I wonder if Shishkin might have started in the days when someone with a riding crop was down at the start? The person waving their arms about behind him was not likely to make much difference.

If a horse doesn’t want to start he is not going to start regardless of who is behind them and what they are holding – Vodkatini a prime example back in the day when they were allowed to do that.

Cobden has had three and two on the owner’s horses who Nicholls stated was the reason for being sent to Ascot so…….it was a convenient explanation as to the riding arrangements that were made and if you take it at face value then it is what it is but those who read more into things will have plenty to chew on.

Did think Pic D’Orhy made somewhat rather heavy weather of that considering his task was made rather simple with Shishkin’s antics.

Straw Fan Jack the total outsider of the four picks up nearly £15k for being second.

After watching the replay a couple of times, I’ve noticed once again that Harry Cobden ridden chasers tend to be untidy towards the end of the race.
Pic D’Orhy brushed through the top over the final three fences and hit the 2nd last quite hard which caused a little stumble on landing. He wasn’t brilliant on other chasers as well.

Well done do Sheila Lewis for picking the right race. If you’re absent you can’t pick up any prize-money and she did it despite her stable being very cold in the past 14 days or so.

    ——————-

As predicted, Shishkin has now been given the dreaded Timeform squiggle.
