Not judging by interview today. Said right things, eventually, he didn’t show any drive towards getting at least some spectators into courses
Racing is one sport that can do this but where’s the proposals ?
I just don’t see him pressing the case effectively
September 25, 2020 at 18:38 #1503382He’s more interested in not upsetting Gaurdian readers than he is racecourses etc.
He should have pressed ages ago for racecourses to be treated differently to stadiums , their layout has more in common with Legoland than reading fc.September 25, 2020 at 18:47 #1503384I am in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with Matt Chapman today (or at least some of his points). I don’t think that there is sufficient challenge to the ban on spectators, or demanding an explanation of why the government deems it necessary given the successful pilots. Meanwhile, the Headcorn Battle of Britain Airshow goes ahead this weekend with 1,000 spectators allowed because (according to BBC News) an airfield is a wide open space with plenty of room to manage crowds safely. Everyone can see the nonsense of this sort of inconsistency and it undermines all genuinely effective measures to contain the virus.
September 25, 2020 at 19:52 #1503396Chapman is right. There has been a serious absence of leadership. France is able to race with crowds. Why can’t Britain? Especially when the pilot events have been hailed as a success.
September 25, 2020 at 20:17 #1503402Given the country we’re dealing with, I reckon the best way to get crowds back onto racecourses, is to carefully explain that without them, hundreds, if not thousands, of active racehorses will have to be put down.
The owners will have to cut back as their income or businesses disappear, trainers won’t be in a position to keep the horses if nobody is paying the bills, and nobody is going to be queueing up to buy moderate racehorses or to rehome them.
That’s the way to appeal to the hearts and minds of the Guardian readers and the politicians.
September 25, 2020 at 21:10 #1503410France is able to race with crowds.
Not quite, the ticket sale for all Parisian tracks has stopped two days ago. All Parisian tracks can only be accessed by Members of France Galop or by PMU Card holders (whatever that means).
As for the French Open which start on Monday, the crowds went down from initially 20,000 to 11,500 and then to 5,000 a week ago. Now no more than 1,000 people daily will be allowed when the tournament will start on Monday. And Roland Garros is relatively big, it has dozens of arenas……

I’d taken little notice of Mr. Rust till the equine flu debacle; after which I took no notice of him at all.
September 26, 2020 at 10:09 #1503480I missed that from chapman but fair play to him. He’s no easy to like but I would always rather that than some corporate creep
Why didn’t chamberline push the complacent Rust on the very obvious points raised on this thread?
Or would they rather be talking about f****ng golf
September 26, 2020 at 11:18 #1503488Racing’s hierarchy will never challenge a Tory government.
Rust has been useless in the job.
September 26, 2020 at 11:29 #1503491Chamberlain is just a bland front man. He is not going to say anything to rock the boat.
September 26, 2020 at 13:13 #1503520I’d love to know what ‘Guardian readers’ have to do with anything. It barely shifts over 100,000 copies a day, the majority of whom probably don’t care in the slightest about racing either way.
Face it, crowds aren’t happening any time soon in racing or any other sport, certainly not in decent numbers.

Maybe she will have a bit more about her?
October 1, 2020 at 11:34 #1504340I’m sure Big Mac would have had something to say about this!
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysOctober 1, 2020 at 16:05 #1504391It might help of all the courses stopped the sale of alcohol until further notice.
After a few drinks people are incapable of keeping to the “distancing rules”.
October 1, 2020 at 16:11 #1504393Lots of people turn up at the races who are already hammered. You really would have to be knocking a lot back to get drunk on the watered down, overpriced rubbish that passes for most racecourse beer!

Distancing rules are a load of old cobblers anyway, aren’t they?
October 1, 2020 at 16:15 #1504396Refuse entry if they are “hammered”.
