The stable had very good and consistent form all season long. But, he is 0 for his last 81 over fences at the Festival. I would wish for better form, especially with Dodging Bullets running tomorrow. But what makes me so confident that the drought will end? I don’t know. In fact nothing.
Anyway, how is this poor record for such a dominant trainer like him explainable? He only runs his best chasers at the Festival. I mean 0-81 is not a small number…March 10, 2015 at 18:40 #823112The stable had very good and consistent form all season long. But, he is 0 for his last 81 over fences at the Festival. Anyway, how is this poor record for such a dominant trainer like him explainable? He only runs his best chasers at the Festival. I mean 0-81 is not a small number…Ptit Zig is the only Nicholls horse I have backed this year and it is worrying that he’s not hitting any winners. I think Zarkandar was a decent shout for the World Hurdle and I picked him at 12/1 for the vs Pricewise thread.
As you say Dodging Bullets fans must be a little nervous and he’s a bit uneasy at 11/2 to my eyes. It begs the question what sort of odds we will see on Silviniaco Conti should the drought continue. I’m a bit worried if the ground stays on the good side for the two time King George winner.
I have just got a gut feeling it won’t be Nicky Henderson’s year either. For me it’s not a vintage group he’s brought to this year’s meeting. Peace And Co is considered a lock by some punters but it’s his Hargam that I nailed my colours to before he’d jumped a twig at 16/1. I’m not really sure why but I’ve lost a bit of confidence that it will be a good week for the team.
I hope I am wrong and I’d love to see the old Sprinter Sacre back but it’s looking like Willie’s the kiddy at this Festival malarkey.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 10, 2015 at 18:50 #823119Has there always been a pattern of one trainer dominating each year? I find it tiresome watching the same connections winning race after race, mainly because I like to see the smaller yards have their day in the sun. I thought PN was going to do really well at this Festival and, fed up as I am of him winning all the Saturday races, I did want to see him win a few this week.
March 10, 2015 at 18:53 #823121I agree. Much as it’s nice to see what are probably the most deserving horses win,it’s the upsets and the smaller owner/trainers succeeding that make the festival so exciting.
I'd like to live in a place where they cordon off swans...March 10, 2015 at 19:03 #823145I think Southfield Theatre’s run will be quite telling. The horse has high class form, ground in its favour and seemingly a better prep than Don Poli. If he doesn’t run into the frame (barring a fall), then there could be something wrong.
March 10, 2015 at 19:49 #823254The performance of Keltus really disappointed me. Dodging Bullets was just about out of the equation but definitely now.
March 10, 2015 at 20:46 #823365Just a small point Nicholls hasn’t has a chase winner at the festival for five years so be warned !! LOL
March 10, 2015 at 21:31 #823426Said on the Supreme thread Nicholls isn’t in the best of form, but would not yet call it poor. Although the alarming drift of Vibrato Valtat and (in recent days) Dodging Bullets is worth noting. Came in to the Festival with a recent strike rate worse than you’d expect from Nicholls too. May be there is a minor virus?
That said, do think Southfield Theatre’s price makes it worth taking a chance. Normally very consistent and has some good Festival form.
Value Is EverythingMarch 10, 2015 at 21:52 #823462Regarding Vibrato Valtat I think today was his seventh run since October, so perhaps his season was over before he even started today. I wonder if for Nicholls, unlike some other trainers, Cheltenham is not the be-all and end-all of the year. He does spend a lot of time the rest of the year mopping up good prizes (especially on Saturdays!). He certainly is not afraid to run them and usually you can be confident they are fit, again unlike some others.
March 10, 2015 at 22:54 #823648That’s a good point. We’ve got used to those four stalwarts of his yard dominating the big Cheltenham races for the past few years, so we assume he’s going to carry on with that success. Yes he’s got great saturday horses but no stars any more. Maybe we’re just expecting too much of him, and while he’d love a festival winner no doubt, his realistic aim is now those saturday races. Cheltenham is a bonus, not the main target.
I'd like to live in a place where they cordon off swans...March 11, 2015 at 15:43 #825358I tell you, it’s not safe to start this type of thread.
It happened with Jonjo and the floodgates opened, here we are and Nicholls has just had a screaming success to stop the rot.
That’s cheered me up regarding Ptit Zig’s chances anyway.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 11, 2015 at 17:23 #825521@ Steve: It was a wake-up thread!!! I’m glad that they are bang in form since I was on Southfield Theatre, Dodging Bullets and Aux Ptits Soins. I don’t mind being wrong with the start of my thread. Nevertheless one chase winner from over 80 runners is still a bit weak for a bloke like him.
March 11, 2015 at 17:29 #825524Get on the man in form.

I was as worried about it as anybody. It just seems Sods’s Law that, when you mention someone out of sorts, they pop up with a winner pretty quickly.
It’s far from being wrong, those are legitimate stats and it’s just the fates that play tricks on you once you put pen to paper.
Although I am on Road To Riches long term, I am not backing any other horses in the Gold Cup and would love Silvianaco Conti to win this if mine doesn’t. I just can’t back him with his disappointing effort last season and his Charlie Hall run, which were both on the faster surface he may encounter again.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 11, 2015 at 18:06 #825579I backed every Nicholls horse today..except for the ones that won and placed . I’m having that sort of week.
March 11, 2015 at 19:10 #825857Aye this is typical…but typical of the man. Every time I think a Nicholls’ horse has no/little chance or the stable are out of form he proves me wrong. Ladbrokes were offering 8/1 on Dodging Bullets when I went in this lunchtime and I still didn’t get on
March 11, 2015 at 19:14 #825892I did say that I’d thought that PN was going to have a really good Festival; did I back his winning/placed horses today. Nope; only the one that didn’t. Interesting to see how his horses get on tomorrow.
