I wouldn’t touch it with Graeme Souness’s barge pole. When I heard that George Burley had been sacked, I immediately said that Craig Levein ( Dundee Utd’s manager ) was the most obvious replacement. Why him, you may ask ?
Well, he would be a popular choice; he would command respect from players and fans alike. He doesn’t suffer fools gladly ( Graeme Hogg
) and would deal with recalcitrant whingers ( eg Kris Boyd ) and any prospective two fingers sticker uppers (eg Ferguson and McGregor ) much more severely than wee George ever could – or did.Levein is tactically aware and is adept at organising average players to play in disciplined and competitive manner.
He is also articulate and is very good at dealing with the media.
He is a Scotsman.
He would be my choice.

IMO, this is the main problem Levein will have. Pretty high among the "fools" he’s refused to entertain down the years are the law-makers at the SFA.
I’m very suprised Billy Davies isn’t getting more of a mention for this. Admittedly, I’d be even more surprised if he took on the role if offered, which perhaps answers my own query, but he’s an up-and-coming manager who’s done well on more than one occasion down south.
November 18, 2009 at 07:00 #259214Steve McClaren? Shoo-in
November 18, 2009 at 07:10 #259215Also consider:-
Roy Keane
Kevin Keegan
Mark Wright.
Scotland have got to think "outside the box". Now any of those 3 or Steve McClaren would be "interesting".

As would John Barnes.

November 18, 2009 at 10:24 #259237As if the Manager makes any difference to Scotlands ability as a football team! Willie Ormond might as well do the job!
November 18, 2009 at 10:51 #259241Interestingly TAPK, I was listening to a debate yesterday during which it was highlighted that it wasn’t that long ago that Scotland were ranked 14th in the FIFA rankings – were beating France home and away as well as taking Italy right to the wire for qualifications to the Euro’s.
So, I think with the right man in charge a fair difference in fortunes can be brought about.
Personally, I liked to Scotland (and all the Home Nations) at the World Cup and Euro’s, but obviously I wouldn’t want to see them do anything daft – like qualifying from the group stage
November 18, 2009 at 11:01 #259243Scotland have always been under achievers,if we brought back the home internationals,i would bet on Scotland being bottom of the league!I loved the home internationals, one of the highlights of the year was Scotland v England,i bet Stuart Kennedy has fond memories of swinging round his goalposts!!

I remember this match well. Stewart Kennedy played for Rangers at the time and was actually not a bad goalie. He only won five caps; against Sweden (1-1), Portugal (1-0), Wales (2-2), Northern Ireland (3-0),
and England ( 1- 5
), after which, unsurprinsingly, he failed to win another cap.For all his "fond memories" (
) of that terrible day at Wembley, he probably doesn’t have the same nightmares as Ray Clemence does, who still has flashbacks every time he opens his legs or bumps into Kenny Dalglish.

November 18, 2009 at 14:31 #259283Stewart Kennedy and several other members of the Scotland team went on to be successful "Turf" accountants i believe!

Grasshopper 100/1The bookies have these horribly wrong. I’d make myself an Evens chance in this 4 horse race lol.
On a serious note, I’d be happy to see Jim Jeffries given the job. We need someone who isn’t an ego but who understands scottish football.
As mentioned by others though, we dont have enough quality players just now…and wont while the standards of our coaching in youth football is so bad. Most youth team coaches spend 70 mins or 80 mins (however long kids games are) telling them to get stuck in and battle…as long as they dont lose the 50-50’s they will win the game. I used to hear that phrase every match. Ridiculous. No matter that our kids cant even pass the ball from point a to point b.
When I was a kid all the kids who got trials with professional clubs were those that were physically taller and stronger, not necessarily those who were better footballers but smaller or slighter in build. Thats the problem…we invest in the wrong people at youth age.
I know for a fact that Celtics current Under 15’s are garbage but have 2 big bullying centre forwards in there team. They dont try to pass the ball through midfield – they just lump the ball up to there 2 forwards. It is embarrassing. If Saviola or Maradona were scottish they would never even have been given a chance at a professional club in scotland in the 90’s and in the 2000’s. There places would have been taken by Stephen McManus types – pathetic footballers.
November 18, 2009 at 23:41 #259394Doughino who do you support, and what players do they have playing for Scotland ?
Any new manager has a problem on his hand before a ball is kicked in Boyd, Ferguson and McGregor. Then there’s Kevin thomsons tendancy to get injuries before every Scotland game, which miraculously clear up quickly.
November 19, 2009 at 11:58 #259428The quality of the players is so poor. They need an experienced manager, any youngish one such as Levein will be off after a couple of years for a club job if doing reasonably well.
