I’ve always found the first day of the July meeting a bit tricky and today is no exception. I’ve had a nibble at a couple here but will be saving the dough for maybe tomorrow, definitely the very busy weekend. Loadsa racing.

I like Zechariah in the 150 but there’s just something about the Meade’s runners that I can’t trust recently so I’ll give it a miss basically but I’ll put a couple of quid on to avoid regret if he does come in.

225 – Little Big Bear and Persian Force are vying for favoritism, the former victorious over 5f in the listed Windsor castle stakes, the latter runner up over today’s trip in the Coventry, both at Royal Ascot. I didn’t think the Hannon colt ever looked like winning so the value for me is the AOB sprinter. The runner up of his race has since bolted in at listed level, so all looks fairly decent at the minute.
I think the money could initially come for Persian Force so I’ll wait around for a better price on the Bear. I might yet have a decent bet on this one.

300 – Khanjar at around 4/1 looked OK value to me, it wouldn’t have surprised me if the bookies latched on to this Haggas gelding and put him in around 5/2, the trainer is in the form of his life this season. That said, it’s difficult to ascertain what level he is up to right now and there are a fair few here that have run well in this grade before. But not very recently. In fact, Khanjar and Twelfth Night are the only 2 of 19 runners bringing a last time out win in to the race.
    Just a nibble for interest.

335 & 410 looked tricky to me, so just a watching brief. Any thoughts welcome.

Skybet are cash back if you finish 2nd in the July Stakes.
I went with Persian Force though admit it could easily have been the Bear

It may well be the Coventry form is good enough Nathan. Blackbeard was 5th and he was a short head runner up next time in the group 2 Railways Stakes at The Curragh.
There’s some interesting form lines actually as he was beaten by Shartash and that one was 2 lengths behind Little Big Bear when both were running for the first time.
Persian Force was 2 lengths in front of Blackbeard in the Cov so it all ties in closely. Probably too closely for my liking now, actually.
Cue neither of them winning. I’ll be going with that Skybet offer, would be disappointing if either finished out of the top 2.

I think Blackbeard may have gone closer at Ascot but was on the day the wrong side of the track

I have had a nibble on Al Qareem 10/1 purely as I think he could be closer to the others than the odds suggest. I feel he went a little to quick at Ascot and in this smaller field maybe able to save a bit more for the finish

Done Mostahdaf 7/4 in the Princess Of Wales’s Close Brothers Stakes. Was first try at the distance in the Hardwicke and Broome set some strong fractions. Connections having another go here at the distance and may not be run as fast this time

Unlucky Nathan. Expected run from Zechariah, I don’t know how anyone would put an honest amount on a Martyn Meade horse, he’s a liability to the bank balance. Backed into favourite as well.

I had him in a pound Each way double with Delegate this Lord over at Doncaster so I picked up a tiny bit of place money which I’ll stick on Bosh 13/2 in the 3.00 back down to 6f is his thing I think

No Bear, no care. Can’t find any market but I’ll have a pretend bet on outsider Kings Crown to finish ahead of Show Respect. 100/1 and 33/1 respectively.

Not much to be made of that. Bang average race. Did it comfortably enough.

    3pm
    KHANJAR
    Gets my vote.
Simply on the average of previous three years winner’s stalls.
Unbeaten over the distance but has a 9lb hike to contend with….
