I’m 100% "Shi*te".
When I hear the name "Richard Vranch", I want to "Keith Richards" the telly.
Musical Comedy Numbers are all universally shi*te – even Pete Cook & Dudley Moore’s efforts – and they should be banned forthwith.
May 15, 2008 at 16:59 #163708Many of Monty Python’s songs surely argue a seductive case for the "not sh*te" camp?
"Not The Noel Coward Song", "Every Sperm is Sacred" and "Traffic Lights" crease me up even now.

May 15, 2008 at 17:02 #163711PS Grassy – Mrs Column and I are going to the Comedy Store Players on Sunday night to see some live improv, Whose Line is it Anyway?-stylee. I suppose the prospect of both Richard Vranch and Josie Lawrence being there would make you reach for the marching powder, would it?

May 15, 2008 at 17:27 #163715I wholeheartedly agree with the Python comment. I went to see Spamalot the other day and the strateic placing of some of the non-grail Python songs was hilarious. A reminder of how good the Python team were…
However, the name that makes me want to switch the radio off is Mitch Benn on The Now Show – not funny in the slightest and an absolute load of tripe.
Either way I have to vote for the not-Sh*te as I think there is more good musical comedy than bad – eg. Flanders & Swann, Tom Lehrer, Victoria Wood etc etc
May 15, 2008 at 17:32 #163717Nope.
They’re all sh*ite.
I quite certain of my facts here.
May 15, 2008 at 17:42 #163723Who can forget Tony Ferrino, aka Steve Coogan.
His singers famous numbers include
Papa Bendi
Fishing for Girls
Lap Dancing Lady
Valley of Our Souls
Short Term Affiair.

Dont mind this kind of comedy musical as i HATE normal musicals like Grease which is the most overated load of tripe ever.
If someone can explain why musicals are great then i will if they are female by them a moderatlty priced cuppa at a racecourse
May 15, 2008 at 18:09 #163726They’re shite, but IMO not shite enough to start a thread crabbing them Grass. (Unless people start claiming Victoria Wood & Steve Coogan are actually funny!)
May 15, 2008 at 19:06 #163735Generally sh*te but always liked these from the same movie:

May 15, 2008 at 19:29 #163739Generally I agree with Grasshopper. Comedy songs are almost always cringeworthy. There are of course some noble exceptions:

May 16, 2008 at 02:50 #163794eg….. Tom Lehrer….etc etc
Bless you Lekha! Hadn’t listened to TL for years but have just dived in again. You are very nearly a literal lifesaver!
May 16, 2008 at 05:06 #163797Victoria Wood writes funny songs but should never, ever sing them herself.
Monty Python is sacred, good ol’ Neil Innes
I used to love Flanders & Swann as a kid: I could never tire of “The Gas Man Cometh”. I could probably quote it word for word even now.
And no-one has mentioned Weird Al Yankovitch (I’ve probably spelt that wrong). He can actually have me in stitches. You lot know him? If not, seek him out on Youtube, especially the one about Ebay. Tell you what, I’ll find it meself, hang on….
May 16, 2008 at 07:58 #163814Jeezus – 50/50 eh? Unreal.
The "Not Shite"ers are playing their trump cards very early in the game though.
I call your ‘Monty Python’ and raise you a ‘Richard Stillgoe’.

This is from Mario Rosenstock, the guy who plays Mourinho on Setanta Sports.

I particularly enjoy Let’s Do It Tonight – “Not bleakly, not meekly /
Beat me on the bottom with a Woman’s Weekly” is a winning couplet in my householdAnd no-one has mentioned Weird Al Yankovitch (I’ve probably spelt that wrong). He can actually have me in stitches. When he’s bad he’s rotten, but when he’s on form he’s very good indeed, BH. Are you familiar with his “White and Nerdy” track as well?

May 16, 2008 at 08:31 #163832Grassy, you’re surely not still bitter from Christmas 78′ when your parents didn’t buy you the Baron Knight’s and Grumbleweeds albums and you got a lump of coal and a tangerine instead.
Stop letting it hold you back, it’s time to let go.
PS. If you’ve kept the coal get it valued it could be worth a fortune now.
May 16, 2008 at 08:33 #163834Here’s one I was reminded of the other day. Back when Sunday evenings on Radio 1 were good (and loooooong before the execrable Nick Grimshaw was hatched from an egg somewhere), Annie Nightingale used to play this one on her request show week in, week out;

You’ll be humming it in spite of yourselves for the rest of the day now…
