This comes in in the UK tomorrow.
As a non-driver/pedestrian I should now have more right of way but I will be doing as I normally do by treating all drivers as if they are numpties.
January 28, 2022 at 19:31 #1580242Good idea.
I’ve always understood that pedestrians had priority at all times apart from Motorways.I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJanuary 28, 2022 at 19:39 #1580244Reminds me of the old news item sketch on The Two Ronnies, delivered by the late, great, Ronnie Barker.
“It has been announced that the United Kingdom will come into line with the rest of Europe by switching to driving on the right. However, during the transition period it will be optional and motorists can drive on either side. And it’s good night from me….”
Ronnie Corbett: “….And it’s goodnight from him.”
Both: “Goodnight.”

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 28, 2022 at 19:49 #1580249Well to a point Purwell. At a junction if the pedestrian had started to cross then the driver should give way (without a blast of the horn). But if waiting to cross the driver had the right to carry on.
Now a driver SHOULD give way when a pedestrian is crossing or waiting to cross at a junction.
January 28, 2022 at 22:21 #1580267But if you stop on a road to let a pedestrian on the pavement cross the car behind you might drive into the back of you. What if a bicycle turns off a road and there’s a pedestrian waiting to cross? Does the cyclist have to stop and give way to the pedestrian. How do you give a cyclist 5 feet on a country lane that isn’t five feet wide?
January 29, 2022 at 08:27 #1580308I’ll answer in order Moehat –
1) The car behind should keep enough distance in order to stop safely. If they do run into the back of you it is their fault and you will be able to claim for any damages through their insurance. Hopefully there will be no casualties. But in no way is this the pedestrian’s fault or the fault of the new rules.
2) Yes a cyclist should also give way to a pedestrian at a junction. Pedestrians are at the top of the hierarchy, cyclists at No. 2.
3) If a driver does not think it safe to do so i.e. there is not a 1.5 metre gap in order to overtake they should stay behind the cyclist. They would have to slow down to overtake the cyclist anyway and if the cyclist is maintaining his/her own speed then this may not be possible. It is then up to the common courtesy of the cyclist to let the car past by pulling over.
January 29, 2022 at 10:09 #1580327Homer: I’m a driver who looks out for everyone/everything when I’m driving. Eg child not properly supervised by an adult…I slow down/ dog on an extending lead way ahead of its owner..I slow down. Give cyclists as much room as possible. I’m hoping that the new rules will make other motorists drive in the same way but I’m not hopeful. I do think telling cyclists to ride two abreast in the middle of the lane is going to make it very difficult to get past them.
January 29, 2022 at 10:40 #1580335I’m sure you are moehat. The new rules may not be adhered to at first but hopefully like drink driving will become anti-social eventually so that these things are frowned on.
The cyclist “issue” is for safety only. Cyclists should move in, when safe to do so, if cars are wanting to pass.
January 29, 2022 at 12:24 #1580365I always give way to pedestrians at junctions.
Surely they can’t just walk out onto a main road??Will pedestrian traffic lights and zebra crossing be made redundant?
I’m going to buy myself some L plates so that pedestrians/cyclists may be lenient on me if I knock them down

January 30, 2022 at 07:47 #1580603No Nathan. Looking before stepping out into the road would be advised.
Why would crossings be made redundant? You still have to wait to cross when you aren’t at a junction.
If you always give way at junctions just carry on doing the same.
January 30, 2022 at 12:25 #1580650Most drivers don’t know the old highway code, never mind the new one. And as soon as they pass their test, neither do new drivers.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.

January 30, 2022 at 18:51 #1580699Well, nothing much has changed here. We’ve had the police out because boy racers have been racing each other between our village and the next!
January 31, 2022 at 00:38 #1580726You’ve got to obey the CODE it’s like the LIST – I repeat that – THE LIST
January 31, 2022 at 01:02 #1580731Two things strike me
THE LIST
AND
THE CODEThe list just beats the code
