It may interest some forum users to know that “The Rainbow Jacket” is being shown on the Talking Pictures channel next Thursday at 11.20am.

Has anyone ever seen this film? It sounds a bit weird. I believe it is based on a short story written by D.H Lawrence but I haven’t read it.

The film features the young John Howard Davies. He had already played the title character in David Lean’s adaptation of “Oliver Twist”. He went on to become Head of Comedy at the BBC and later Thames Television.

I only found out about the film because it was mentioned by John Cleese in his book about “Fawlty Towers”, which I received as a Christmas present. Howard Davies directed the first series.

Not sure whether to listen to the audio of the story and then watch it?

Thanks moehat, I just thought of seeing if anyone had put it on YouTube. I will try to watch it this weekend.

There is a two minute clip online as well. One of the characters mentions Ladbrokes, so it was obviously trading in the 1940s. He was allowed £250 on the nose at 14/1. No need to provide proof of income in those days and evidently no restrictions either!

I might listen to it when I do the washing up then watch it. I think there’s another, later film version, too. I’m sure I’ve got a book of all of DH Lawrence stories somewhere, too, so maybe I should read it ( decisions decisions… ).I do love discovering something new and going on a literary journey ( one of my favourite podcasts is Backlisted).

I bought a book of short stories by Lawence in a second hand book shop many years ago. I don’t remember that story at all, so I assume it wasn’t in it. And I can’t find the book now!

Not short stories, just his longer works. Audio it is, then…

“The Rainbow” is his best work, followed by “Sons And Lovers”. I never much cared for “Women In Love” or “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”.

Women in Love, the film was partly filmed near to me. All the local kids used as extras were paid in ice cream. My friend owns the descendants of the highland cattle used in the film ( one of them nearly killed her a couple of years ago)and the nude wrestling scene was filmed in the house.
